2025 List Management Discussion - Part 3

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

If we bring in 4 from below:

De Konig
Ryan
Aleer or JSOS
Flanders or CMAC

The biggest gap for me is a lock down defender. I’m not convinced Stocker is the guy and there’s not manager alternatives on the list. Im bullish on Hastie but see him more as an intercepting Half back. Maybe Wilkie but he seems to struggle against elite or quick smalls (Toby green, C Cameron)

In addition, I’m genuinely curious if we can play 4 taller backs in the 1 team from the mix of the below:
Wilkie, Tauru, JSOS/Aleer, Howard, Caminiti.
That’s where we will miss Jimmy. I was thinking maybe O’Connell could develop into that role but he seems to be targeted toward the midfield.

We traded pick 39 and a F2 for pick 28.

An 11 pick upgrade in the second round plus Hannebery for a future second.

It was a salary dump and we punted that we could get his body right.

Genius move if it worked. Poor trade if it didn’t.

He was cooked.
We used to throw away future seconds too easily. Freeman another ridiculous move, had never played a game.

Jesus, Steele isn't what he was but third round pick is insane. If Steele is a third rounder Aleer is worth a pick in the 50s. Aleer is 25 Steele is 29. At his age Steele was dual AA player.
MaCrae was only a third rounder. Unfortunately, Steele has been well past his best for a while now. MaCrae was on the outer at the Dogs but still playing good footy when given the opportunity in the midfield.

Agree that Aleer shouldn't worth a lot though. He's been ordinary this year and has copper a lot of criticism from Giants fans. I think a third is fair for him.

With all these names we are looking to bring in. Will be tight to fit them all in if they do opt in?

De Koning, Aleer, Flanders, McKenzie, Ryan, Fincher, Silvagni - 7 players in
Plus we need to upgrade contracted Caminiti and Stocker off rookie list - so need 9 spots

Cordy, Webster are gone. Byrnes, Jones, Carroll, Schoey are uncontracted to my understanding so if they left that gives us 6. Hoping Windy doesnt leave but that could make 7. Would need to trade out another 2-3 as i think we have to draft at least 2 at the draft as well.

Few words on here about Steele but I dont see it happening (unless I missed something). Similar thoughts about Butler.
Marshall may opt to leave but reports are we want to keep him?

McLennan, Boyd, Heath all rookies so wont open spots for the players we want to bring in. Unless we look to delist and re-rookie someone who is contracted but no names are jumping out at me on our list.

Without a significant surprise of someone requesting a trade, I dont know how we will get all of them.
I don't think Stocker is a rookie.

Boyd and McLennan are gone so the only rookies left are:
Hall
Caminiti

(O'Connell and Armstrong both Cat B)

Another big question the coaches need to answer is what sort of player Mitch Owens is going to be, long term.

Some of us had hopes he would push more midfield but he's seemingly taken over the Tim Membrey "almost a CHF" position.

Between Owens, Sharman, Pou, King, Marshall, RoMa, TDK, Keeler & Dodson there's going to be some serious competition for those forward line spots.

That's assuming Tauru & Barratt are going to be defenders and that Caminiti is staying at FB, even with Howard fit and Aleer/JSOS coming in.

Selection is going to be seriously tough in 2026!!

Disagree on that. Hall is a very handy mid but as a high HF he is probably close to the best in AFL. I think ideally he plays that HHF role and we put him in when we need impact. Guys like Steele, Garcia and Macrae can take the bulk of the centre clearance work. Prefer that with Nas too. Impact in bursts rather than full time.

Agree- desperately need him doing what he does best- precision passing (often under a heap of pressure) to the f50.

If we are smart we'll use him like a mini Tom Lynch in his prime (the ranga one from the crows we let slip).

Stocker takes Webster's role.

Who else does it?
Come Round 1 I think Stocker and Wilkie/Aleer play on the oppo smalls

Come end of 2026, I think O'Connell will be a starting 23 player, whether that's at the expense of Stocker or if we opt to keep Wilkie as a tall and play both Stocker and LOC

To be fair you've always under rated what we should get at the trade table and over rated what we should pay

How you use Macrae as the value for steele but then state aleer is worth a 3rd rounder is beyond me.

Steele has been in the best 22 and captain of a footy club. Macrae and aleer were not best 22 at the time of the trade.

I get age is a factor with aleer but it wasn't when comparing steele to macrae

You may’ve missed it, Phillipou only played 7 games this season the rest were missed through injury
Yep.

Pou played first year as a just able to be drafted 18 year old. Due to our list profile he got AFL games as playing him at Sandy was a waste. 2nd year had a bit of the year 2 blues, went down and his talent saw him way too good and it sling shotted him into some good performances in the back end of the season. 3rd year wrecked by injury. He's still only 20. His first half before he got injured in the last game showed off his talent. Of all the things to worry about, Pou seems an odd one to start at.

Do people actually believe this kind of bullshit?
Humans will always generate narratives to make sense of what they dont understand. Those who suffering with negative emotions will generate negative narratives, whilst the positive minded will generate narratives.
I was constantly talking myself into the existence of some undisclosed grand plan to success during the Richo years until the day he threw the players under the bus and l saw a man without answers deflecting blame to save his own skin.
At that moment l had to conceded self delusion and the wall came crumbling down. At that point l started judging only on what l see. A couple years later l watched this board step in line behind Ratts' extension chasing the good vibes whilst a small handful said Nooooo!!
It's an emotional thing following sports, people clutch onto anything that will make them feel better for just a moment. Inevitably it makes fools of us all at some point.

I think you want both there next year. Maybe Steele is not at top of his game but he is a calming influence and you can't just replace that experience. Similar Macrae. Unless they want out, I would be keeping them on list for next 2 years. They will play their part.

There’s too much positivity around to

Hanners knee was the only injury he had in Sydney.

Didn’t have a soft tissue issue until he joined us.

That & the ankle that he did ‘tripping off the step’.

When Hanners got on the park he looked a class above all our other players. It was shit luck that he kept doing soft tissue injuries. Could just as easily have been a very different outcome.
