Still weird there is absolutely nothing on Ah Chee, nothing whatsoever.

Sad that it sounds like Starc is gone. :(
Definitely big opportunity for any out of the team mids/backs to compete for a lockdown small back spot next year. Answerth wont be back until mid-year or so

I think the lack of commentary reflects he is very sure thing to stay. Media are generally really aware of players movements these days, so I’d suspect it’s only a matter of time before we hear about an extension.

Sad re Starce, as he is critical to our structure. I’m sure we’d be looking at bolstering our back six via Trade. For mine the backline definitely looks like our weakest in terms of depth.

Also another thing to take note of is the insights old Swanny would have provided the club before he headed off to AFL House. He’s already in the media saying he’s gonna look to penalise ruck wrestling at centre bounce. Draper is an athlete he will just jump over his opponents. Massive possible advantage there.

Draper has potential and entering his prime years. Injuries have impacted him a bit and it will take a season to de-Essendonfy him but he has all the tools to be an athletic ruck we probably have not really had since Martin left.
Good comparison.

We will have to try and recruit a cheap small defender if Starc leaves & Answerth LTI. We have no one else to play their types of physical shut down roles, which is pretty damn important when you look around the gun small fwds the best teams have. Wilmot probably has to do it but I don't think he has the strength or power to excel in those tasks.

Fletcher, McKenna, Brain.... outside options like moving a winger back there ie Marshall or Reville. All not suited to it either. Dev was horrid back there apparently.

Part of me wishes we had used a draft pick to have more options here but I suppose you dont get drafted as a lockdown small defender so cant be too critical. Just cant see where we can find one on our list right now.

At this stage, I would say he's more likely to leave given he hasn't re-signed yet.

Hopefully I'm wrong, but that's usually what happens at this time of the year.

We did. His name was Brock Smith. But he was a bust. I only remember him because I was very annoyed Trent Rivers got taken the pick before.

I’d be playing Brain or short term, Marshall there.

Starcevich (and Answerth) wasn’t a defender at U18 level. He was a mid with good skills, but wasn’t a high accumulator.

It’s really a position where you want a good athlete with speed, agility, a good vertical leap who is a good mark, and solid skills.

Reville would be a good shout, loves the physical stuff.

If we do want to recruit a small defender, someone who is out of contract and would come cheap in a trade is Hugh Bond from Adelaide.

He only made his AFL debut last year so I haven't been able to find much in the way of senior highlights, only draft videos. He often played as a midfielder at junior level, but you can see his defensive work from about 0:43 onwards in this video:

He played 7 games in his first season and tied for 7th overall amongst general defenders for defensive pressure acts per game (10.0), slightly above Zorko and Amswerth. He also tied for 3rd with Ryan Lester at defensive one-on-ones per game (1.6), with a loss rate of only 27.3%. This is very good for a youngster, comparable to players like Broad, Vlastuin and Miles Bergman.

No AFL games so far this year, has been a SANFL regular.

I like it but gee it will be tough getting anyone out of Adelaide at the moment.

It will be. However, he's coming to the end of his third season and was only given a one year extension last year. So he won't be on the rookie salary and it's possible we could offer him more than Adelaide would, if Starce leaves.

Could Beecken play a Starc type role in firsts? Losing Starc on top of Answerth being gone for ages is a massive double whammy for next year.

I rated starce as probably one of the best players in the squad, but after the gold coast game, he can go. He's not the same player anymore, and i know people can say form can change, but it can't if you're afraid of getting another concussion. The guy has been playing at 80% since returning, and its only dropping. It's a shame, because he was my favourite player last season.

I think he's earnt more of a chance to get himself right if he wants to stay.

The problem is, if you're one headknock away from medically retiring, why would you take a short deal? Which is probably the only thing the lions are offering right now. However, the club has supported him immensely since his multiple concussions, and i would also be disappointed in him if he left us after that.

Well he didn't concuss himself outside of playing for the club so we should support him immensely.

Selection committee have move Beecken to the wing at least in the named side over the last two weeks and apparently Fages listed him as a possible wing replacement recently. The player in our current side that Beecken reminds me of is Berry. Not the same, but up right running player, while tough in contests, gets most of his ball on the outside through running and linking. Not a low to the ground player like Noah (My impression anyway. Should have checked Cecil DeMille aka Crusha on YouTube for highlights) so in my view possibly some of Straces’ roles but no look down.

Well it looks like Brain will get the spot by default.

... while free agent Brandon Starcevich and West Coast is on the table.
Moneyball
LION FACING CHALLENGING PATH WEST
The AFL’s complicated free agency compensation rules mean the path for Brandon Starcevich to head to West Coast is extremely challenging.
The Eagles are keen on more senior players to help coach Andrew McQualter but securing free agents will be a challenge because they will likely secure the No. 2 overall pick for departing free agent Oscar Allen.
The Lions want to keep premier small defender Starcevich as a restricted free agent and if they lose him will get nothing in compensation because they are already adding Oscar Allen and potentially Sam Draper.
Under the AFL’s rules compensation is decided by net gain or loss, so adding two stars and losing one would mean they get no compensation pick for Starcevich.
West Coast have strong interest but the No. 2 pick would be pushed back if Starcevich arrived.
So it makes all the sense in the world for the Lions to pay up to secure Starcevich.
He had asked for a two-year deal at Brisbane but they are open to offering him a longer contract.
Vic clubs are also sniffing around given his partner is from Victoria.
He is in Perth for the Freo clash in round 23 where he will come closer to a decision

That's some pretty basic analysis... Starce is an RFA, so we can match and force a trade.
It's not in WC's interest to take Starce as a FA as it devalues whatever they get for Oscar Allen.

So if WC want Starce, they'll trade something for him while ensuring our offer to OA get's them pick-2.
