West Coast board having a meltdown over giving pick 19 for Starce. Apparently they think 34 is enough
I don't get why picks are so highly valued... A gamble on the 19th most favoured kid, versus an established (amongst the best) lockdown defender. For me there's no chance a single pick would cover him, even pick 1...

Couldn’t agree more. Not ponying up for Starc is insane and even worse when it’s for a flog like Draper and not a need in OA.
I think what has been reported is that he is 1 bad concussion away from retirement. As sad as it is to see Starc leave, he could very well have a concussion in the first few weeks of next season and need to be medically retired. This is why WC are more hesitant because to give him 6 years is crazy imo. Good on Starc for getting it, and l don't blame him at all for taking it.

Do you think we should have matched WC’s 6-year contract?
…and if he gets medically retired next season and we get saddled with his contract for until 2031, still should pony up?
(And that’s ignoring that he wants to go back to Perth!)

I also guess the passive attitude and blasé acceptance of Starcevich and Ah Chee leaving by Fages and the club without much of a fight, I’ll just assume Bailey won’t be here in 2027 if not next year if the right offer comes along given the current attitude of acceptance.
As much as I'm disappointed they are leaving, they're not contracted and are free to do what they feel is best for them.
Having given everything they could to help the team win 2 flags, you have to thank them for their excellent service and wish them all the best.
Trying to pressure or force them in some way to keep playing for the Lions against their wishes , is not going to end well for either them or the greater team cohesion and morale.

I'm sure Fages and the club would have loved them to stay on and told both how much they're valued and wanted at the Lions. Calling the coach and club out on having a 'Passive attitude and blasé acceptance ' about them leaving feels unfair and off the mark.

What colour paint are you huffing???

A few clubs and definitely ours will be losing a star to the Devil.

No player is knocking back a $1,000,000 bonus.

Offer a Million dollar bonus to each of Will Ashcroft, Nick Daicos, Finn Callaghan and Harley Reid and see who bites.
I think Daicos has already said he would 'talk'. Listening to Nathan Buckley speculate on the type of player they want and the attitude they will have about actually wanting to be there I'd say we loose someone whom is a 'front man' a good media person and a good leader. I'd think Jasper is the one they will come after with the biggest offers.

Draper is a flog because he has long hair? Allen isn’t a need because we’ve got Big O who’ll play on for years to come? You’ve got some pretty average takes on this and that’s not even getting into your attitude on players leaving the club.

So you think we should be offering Ah Chee a five year deal and a substantial raise? And Starcevich, we may not even have the money in the cap to pay almost a million to a defender given that's prime midfield money.

That kind of overpay is exactly how we lose players like Bailey or Morris down the track, because our salary cap is tied up long term in big deals.

At least in our long term deals guys have taken serious unders as part of the negotiation, e.g. Hipwood.

For the greater good of our club, not paying overs for role players like Starce and Cal means we can remain successful and continue bringing in talent. Matching a Starce or Cal offer could mean we lose someone else in the future. Necessary evil, wish them the best, they're lions legends and now we get to add some more talent.

I agree. We need to take a medium to long term view. Our last two premierships have come off the back of stellar performances of our 22 and under players, all of whom will expect a significant pay rise in their next contracts. Keeping these players is vital and in order to do so, we have to free up space in our salary cap. Both Ah Chee and Starcevich will be legends at our club for ever, but neither is irreplaceable and given what the market was offering, neither was affordable. I’d sooner lose them, if it means keeping Wilmot and Fletcher or Morris and Lohmann or any other combination of young superstars that opposition clubs will come for. Bottom line, we need to pay them appropriately. I’d also like to keep Bailey and both Ashcrofts and McCluggage as one club players.

Wishing Ah Chee, Starcevich and Dev Robertson all the best. They deserve to profit from their sporting careers and hopefully enjoy financial security after football. I don’t begrudge them that. I’m looking forward to seeing how they go at their new clubs, especially Robertson, who I think will finally get the space to shine.

Now we move on.

1 That same possibly passive attituide had attracted players - joe, Charlie, dunkley .... stay with it i say.

2 who says they didn't fight. Are you a club insider?

3 do you think players are so emotionally immature that they need to be fought over to stay? Maybe other clubs can ring a player and pick a fight and the player will run to them. That's a worry.

As it is, I think we are probably 10 (guessing) points a game worse off losing Starc and Ah Chee. Both were extremely important in our defensive game. How do we replace them. Ah Chee is easier but Starc is a bit of a unicorn.

We just adjust the roles within our team. It's pretty simple, we've been doing it for a couple of years now with all the injuries we've had

And if we're at all concerned, look what happened with covering the loss of Joe and later the loss of Hippy

Obviously we have a system that develops the best in players.

That's always going to lead to more to high level players than we can use.

Their value in the trade market is big, they can persue personal life changes like going home and money to set themselves up for life (a worthy reason) The club builds good relationships with other clubs making it easier to trade in guns.

We lost joe and survived. We can survive players leaving.

I wonder if we have our eye on someone from another team? Possibly a plug and play type? Maybe a delisted player? We have the list spots available.

Probably need another small forward and a medium defender to cover for Ah Chee and Starce. May also need a fourth ruck if Omac retires.

Perhaps we have the talent on our list already. Shadeau Brain is only 21 years old and he might be ready to step up next year. He would be coming into an established defensive unit with some great mentors in Andrews, Lester, Gardiner and Zorko.

Absolutely and Im a big fan of Brain, think he could give it a real crack. Just looking at how many list spots we have available, and there is room for a mature age option, should one be identified.
