The build should be a cycle and we moved the levers at the wrong point cementing us in perpetual mediocrity and having to make drastic changes to do list repair on the fly but not really being terrible enough to access the top end of drafts.

It should be but the system keeps us at the bottom of that cycle (not the ladder, but the cycle).

And again, we are uniquely poorly placed to avoid an existential crisis due to a proper bottoming out. Did you read the stuff about our crowd on the weekend? We're not even that bad right now. Imagine if we were 1986 bad.

Higgins was for a 2nd rounder was excellent trading but Henry looking to be a bust if he can't get his knee right

It was a great deal but technically a first round pick swap as well.

My understanding was that he wasn't showing enough commitment to being a professional footballer. He was also caught drink driving within a few months of being drafted which was a breach of contract. So after that the club doesn't need another reason to sack him.
Was very young when we drafted him so its great to see he's getting another crack at AFL with Suns.

Always looked a likely type but as I said struggled a bit with the step up but he was very solid in his final year at Sandy.

He was a part time footballer when we first selected him - lived in Mt Gambier and did the return trip to Adelaide twice a week to play in the SANFL.

We are on a path to move ahead now but 95% of our issues were self inflicted.

Not for about 8 years.
2018 King is still a great prospect
2019, four still playing missing Howard terribly, Jones is the only mid with pace, Hill is on a downward spiral
2020 Crouch FA, Higgins
2021, NWM, Windy, Chito
2022 Pou, the others are gone but Keelercstarting to come on
2023 Wilson, Collard, Hastie, Garcia, Ari, Henry, Dow - Wilson having 2nd year blues, Henry and Dow injured, others have shown glimpses a bit early
2024, Travaglia, and Tauru, Boxshall, Barratt, Said, Carroll, Macrae. Not much still developing, Carroll injured, Tauru unseen, only Macrae have shown his real class.
Last two years has been underproductive and mainly development or injury, can't say anything since 2017 has been self inflicted.

The problem with the Northern Academies is the absolute best players from Qld & NSW are really only available to the Brions / Suns / Swans / GWS ...... why should those players be only available to those 4 teams?

Imagine if the Northern Academy system was operational (like today) from the late 90s

Max Hudghton - pick 15 goes to Brisbane
Lenny Hayes - pick 11 goes to Sydney
Roo - pick 1 goes to Suns
Kossie - pick 2 goes to GWS
X. Clarke - pick 5 goes to Suns
R. Clarke - pick 8 goes to Suns
Gilbo - pick 33 goes to Suns
Armo - pick 9 goes to Brisbane

At what stage does the rort finish and the draft become an equitable system?

Or do we have to wait until Suns & Giants win multiple flags for the AFL to be appeased?

I'd be offering our FRP for Walsh and a 2nd or 3rd round pick in return. There are queries on his back, and he is going to cost $1m+ in salary. Would be doing the Blues a massive favour taking him and TDK' salaries. Get him in to mentor Wilson, who he models his game on.
Walsh a mistake
Another accumulator who is one paced And breaking down
No thanks

Walsh isn't making Carlton play any better so not sure he would make us any better

He has become just another dime a dozen mid fielder

If we truly want to improve and become a significant Finals contender we need to upgrade the worst 7 of our best 22 (in whatever positions they may be) and get King fit & firing ..... and pray that our talented youngsters stay relatively injury free and can take the next step in development

Walsh makes us better, no doubt, but the cost and his body are the worry for me, we need a running mid that can transition, one that can get on the move in the stoppage. Walsh isn't that

King can't get on the park. Everyone else drafted long gone. Wilkie rookie our best addition.
2019 all of the need replacing before we next challenge. Major fail.
Higgins great. Crouch gone. Should have gone for Caldwell.
2021 onwards has been very good.

We had Caldwell, then Crouch (and Stengle wasn't it) got in trouble and his price went down. We jumped on it and (St Kilda supporting) Caldwell cracked the sads and started worrying about his job security, despite us still wanting him.

I am still shocked we didn't participate tonight. Maybe it's just drafting for draftings sake, but there have been plenty of hits in the MSD in the past and we had a good pick.

I've got an uneasy feeling about Adams, especially with the Suns rubbish in the media this week. He fits the typical country kid late developer perfectly. Not saying we should've held onto an unprofessional kid who was acting up but it'll be just our luck that he makes the grade.

The other thing to note is that tonight's draftees could nominate a 6 or 18-month contract.
Now if we land TDK and Aleer, we still have to draft 3 kids or 2 kids and a rookie upgrade, which still means we have to delist 5

We have Hall and Camaniti on the rookie list who will need upgrading, Hammer definitely.
so 5, possibly 6 delistees.

Apart from Cordy, Boyd and possibly Heath as the standouts, who are we delisting? Going to be some hard luck stories.

These types of year-by- year analysis are interesting but it takes years to really know.

Billings and Gresham are examples of players who showed genuine promise but that was never delivered consistently over multiple consecutive years.

Last two years has been underproductive and mainly development or injury, can't say anything since 2017 has been self inflicted.
Yeah, nah.

We could have Blake Acres and Kosi Pickett (or Will Day, or several others picked in the teens in a stacked draft).

Instead we have Brad Hill.

McLennan
Boyd
Heath
Cordy
Jones

MAYBE:
Schoenmaker
Howard
Windy (trade)
Webster (we want to keep him but he is considering retirement)

Walsh has chronic and ongoing back issues. He is finding them increasingly debilitating.

Plus his disposals skills can be sloppy.

I’d pass on him.

Yeah, he's a name that if you didn't follow closely you'd pencil down as a target, but he isn't the same player he was shaping up to be because of injuries outside his control. Unfortunate because he's a hard worker and still young, but his type of back injury is very rare, especially for someone that young. He's basically playing hurt every single week and has adapted his style of play to manage this.

To put some numbers around this

Hannebery, Crouch and Carlisle- we signed at the ages of 27, 26 and 24.

Between the 3 of them, they played 150 games for St Kilda.

We would’ve been hoping for 100 – 150 each.

I have heard it alleged that there was a lack of due diligence in Hannebery’s case. Inadequate medicals and a bit of “nepo baby” with Hannebery’s dad being close with Simon Lethlean.

Crouch had a long history of injuries.

Carlisle had questionable character- notably cracking it while being subbed off the ground during a game in his final season at Essendon (“This club is f***ed!”…he wasn’t wrong, but still). And soon after St Kilda signed him, a video emerged of Jake enjoying some white powder. (Note: Similar allegations were made of Hannebery, without video evidence).

Going back further, I knew someone who was connected at Essendon and he told me St Kilda should keep away from Andrew Lovett. We all remember what happened there.

Is St Kilda just a victim of being a small club who cant attract tier 1 free agents- so we’re forced to take risks like these?

Or can we be doing things more intelligently than we are? Better due diligence and more caution?

Hannebery was completely cooked when we signed him. His 2017 was below his standards and his 2018 season made it clear he was not the same player from just a few seasons back - giving him 5 years was absolutely outrageous. What I do respect about him was he gave it absolutely everything when he was able to get on the park and he had a deep feeling of genuine guilt about how much he was being paid and how little he was playing. He was a known enjoyer of a good time, but he was also one of the hardest working players in the comp.
