Sorry but this shit is making 0 sense to me, so if 25-30 players are drafted tonight in an 18 team comp btw, do we deem all those 30 players as first round picks?

They could change it so easily. No trading single picks out for multiple junk picks without list spots.

That will make trades on the night too difficult.

A club may wish to trade it's #3 and #40 to a club for #21, #22, #23 with a plan to on trade that #21 to a third club for a future pick but can't do it now because you need all three clubs on the phone at once to transfer the value around.

Going into the draft with picks matching list spots and only two picks being able to match a bid will suffice. That will be the rule next year.

It sucks for Port and Carlton. They'll have no draft hand for two years to buy their top three picks next year. That's the point I guess.

I hope they enjoy watching Brisbane run around with half their team paid for with picks in the 40s while they gave up years of draft value for their one player - they'll feel very fair.

To be fair to Mitch the last two games he has seen us play, Carlton(2025) we had the three talls and two rucks, and Carlton (2024) we played Tabs/Amiss/Treacy with Jackson.

So he doesn't have much history to go on.
And Geelong round 1.

Riley and McClure are blues.

Twomey is bombers

The point is to make it hard to match so clubs can't, therefore the first round doesn't end up at 25-30 picks. It blowing out so much is a fail as it dilutes the mechanism of the draft where the bad teams get the good picks.

I didn't know they were making it 2 picks only per bid, I suppose that will help but the issue is that similar to the Carlton scenario this year. It still makes more sense for clubs to trade out their 1 matching pick for 2 cheaper ones and more points, even if they get an extra 50-100. This continues to dilute the draft.

I'd also be happy if they made it so you can't match round 1 bids but instead can trade for linked players on the day with picks/futures once they have been picked up. Gives F/S & Academies a chance for all kids but they pay true market value.

I don't agree with the desire to make it hard to match academy and father son picks. I think that will only lead to players being hidden and under developed because there's a penalty for clubs to invest in them.

We haven't had a single pick added to the first round yet from academy/FS picks being bid on and the first round is 23 picks long. That's the addition of a priority pick for West Coast and four free agent compensation picks.

At least half of the issue has nothing to do with academy or FS picks - and next year it will be even less.

It remains to be seen if clubs will be bidding much next season when rules are stricter.

They just shouldn't be awarding first round compensation picks at all.
I agree, compo needs to go & same with pp's.

Change the compo to a points bank for matching, cap it and roll it over across say 5 years.

You don’t get an extra pick, but we’ll make it easier to match academy or f/s

That's a fun idea. You could open the flexibility of it up a bit and allow clubs at the start of the season to nominate if they want their points to turn into a pick at the end of year draft, similar to how the Gold Coast poached players compensation picks.

I, for one, am truly devastated by this. How sad for both Port and Carlton.

Don't worry, I'm sure it will be scrapped eventually...just as Freo are starting to bottom out again and go back to our feeder club ways. Only for it to return when a darling club has a singular down year.

Cox is a good pick up. Minimum salary, no assets traded and gives us Ruck insurance.

Getting in a player to play as a third ruck on the list that is half recent was impossible.

He isn't in the best 23 and if we get any injuries he can plug in and play. The extra bench allows for him to play 60% in the ruck.

McDonald and Cox are good reserves to cover injuries.

Two years?! What’s is with Fremantle gifting 2-4 year contract to 30 year olds.

What’s next? JOM adding 2 years beyond 2025?
It was 2 years or nothing to get him over here. The other option is to get another Reidy and it's 1 whole year before they can play at AFL level and they leave after the 2nd one unless they are a crab.

The reverse scenario when they can play in year 1 and are declining further in year 2 is better for us since Riddle should be a lot bigger in 12 months time.
