Some Pies fans here are simply one eyed supporters.

Pies have glaring hole and it needs to be fixed to have a chance to beat Lions in a finals scenario.

The same Pies fans will dismiss losing to GWS in round 0, will then use a win in April as a barometer.....No one cares about Pies winning a game for 4 points in April as much as a game in July and August with Finals around the corner.

The only area where we are ahead is defence but even then they have the best defender in Harris Andrews. This Brisbane side is basically our 2010 team without all the Eddie-Malthouse-Buckley nonsense happening in the background.

As I said many times now.

Fagan tanked the qualifying final to see what Geelong would do against them. He watched, taped and planned against it.
The effort and skill level here versus 3 weeks ago is black and white, and Lions are worn out.

The Lions training at warm temperature all season long and off season is a great advantage in fitness and tank. Add talent and genius coaching and it's a dynasty.

brisbane selects from the top ten in the draft...geelong gets em from geelong west and ireland and some plundering of other clubs...the AFL calls it equalisation

Not just Harris Andrews, Lester, Wilmott, Darcy Gardiner etc

Suns also potentially building a superteam along with Lions....

Would not be surprised if Suns and Lions in the top 3 teams for the next 5 years. AFL influence is ridiculous..... lacks Meritocracy.

The Daicos/Ashcroft debate is the most forced football conversation of all time. Rise above fellas.

Agreed. It’s the age and f/s factor. But put Nick in that Lions outfit today and I’m actually very confident he’d match if not do better than Ashcroft. It’s as pointless as the S Darcy vs Nick debate but I guess people want something to talk about for one, and something to put Nick down for two.

On another note, we were essentially on balance the second best team this year. Someone put it well, we were the best defence but lack offensive firepower and that was very clearly where the Lions won putting their foot down post HT against us and the Cats.

So that should be the focus of the off season.
Sign Elliott. Get Bobby back up and running.
Freshen the forward line mix (eg Buller).

Also I’ve been lukewarm on Trac but if you had to convince me the finals series this year would be a good argument. He would bring that forward momentum in the midfield that we simply do not have besides Nick, especially when Jordy is down and Crisp is a shadow of himself.

All in all we need to keep a cool head and not panic. Don’t throw the good parts of the season just because we fell short against the best team of the season. But be aware of where the game is going and not rely on defence only as that doesn’t get you all the way there in the era of 6-6-6 and back and fourth slingshots.

And many many of us have seen this coming a long long way out. The academies, the double up of father sons for Lions and Swans, the AFL investments, the concessions were all designed for this outcome to ‘grow the game’ up North. The tweaks are coming now but it’s clearly a case of too little too late.

Not anymore. Next year Brisbane also add another 2 quality players to their squad while we can only invest in the hopeful types while delisting 5 premiership players. I don’t share your optimism.
Is the AFL also giving special dispensation to them to play with 27 on the field so all their world beaters get a run?

Absolutely, you need a lot of things go your way and it didn’t for us. Pendles calf, Howe, McCreery, De Goey, Schultz constantly injured all year, Hill MIA and Mihocek playing injured.

Could’ve and should’ve been our year but wasn’t.
I think more could’ve than should’ve.
We don’t have the talent enough within the midfield and our forward line is sub par.
I still have faith with tinkering and recruitment.
Most of the pieces are there.
For now the Lions are prime.

I’d argue our biggest hole is the midfield

We have

  • Nick
  • Beau

That’s it. That’s all we have in terms of genuine and consistent centre bounce performers.

Long isn’t quite up to the standard
De Goey can randomly go missing (like last week)
Pendles is a touch too old and slow (and we really need to stop relying on a near 40 year old)
Crisp isn’t a true midfielder

Josh could be a great midfielder but we don’t use him there

Perryman seems like he could be handy but again, we haven’t been using him there

Now that I think about it, selection is also one of our biggest weaknesses
Jaicos needs to move to the midfield permanently. Houston to his role.
