But that’s all it is a starting point.
There needs to be concrete evidence, with cash or other incentives that can be difficult to prove.
There isn’t an unlimited budget to chase these red flags. The current structure in
leagues don’t have time. The AFL don’t care and leagues would prefer to spend on tangible assets.

I’m sure clubs would be prepared to pay more to have correct governance on the salary cap. I’d say a club that consistently follows the salary cap would appreciate knowing they are on a level playing field. Teams that cheat to win flags are basically costing well run clubs money.

Clubs who want to splurge the cash will always find a loophole in the rules that the extra admin for club volunteers and up would be a waste of time.

Tightening up player points system feels like a much more sustainable solution that really limits the value of mercenaries.

The points system simply needs a few tweaks to continue to fulfil its purpose.

The one point reduction per year is the obvious start as it is giving big recruiting clubs too big a free kick year on year. Maybe it needs to be 1 point for every two years, or you have to play say three years before you get a point reduction. It’s meant to encourage loyalty. Playing one season at a club is not loyalty.

My genuine belief is the biggest hurdle to this happening is the leagues themselves. Or, the bigger leagues such as the EFNL. They do not want this. The outcome of it is the best players spreading out further and they want to maintain their position as the biggest fish.

You want a little both ways though bunk, you demolish and out players as “mercenaries” for only playing one season, then you also say well there shouldn’t be a reduction/reward for them hanging around for season 2, if the club don’t get a reward/deduction for them to stay aren’t you then also aiding the issue clubs will then be like well you can leave you won’t cost us points because there is no deduction or incentive for you to stay anyway?

I think there should be something, it just seems to generous.

Half a point a year? So one every two years?

Noble Park have landed Harry Broderick, the son of Paul. He's coming off a stint with Richmond's VFL team and is a good pick-up

ROBBIE IN DEMAND

We hear several clubs in Melbourne’s southeast have made big plays for Port Adelaide champion Robbie Gray. The 36-year-old is living down that way and, despite some juicy offers, it seems — for now anyway — he’s happy to stay retired.

STAR SIGNING IMMINENT

Hearing an Eastern league club captain is set to be unveiled as a new signing at a Mornington Peninsula league club. The man has also played VFL. His arrival could make his new club a genuine contender in 2025.

Aaron Cottes captain of Bayswater signed at Edi Esp before Christmas on ridiculous money I’ve heard, and coming off a knee reconstruction.

Would it be better to penalise the club hoppers more, rather than changing the points reduction for hanging around?
Aka increase all the points loading for moving to club in same league, multiple clubs over multiple years etc.

After counting Van Unen’s clubs (10).
Maybe just a (+1) penalty for every club you’ve played for previously lol.

Not ridiculous money

Has good friends at Edi Asp and it's far closer to his home.

Has been training and knee is good atm

Robbie Gray was to be Doncaster’s saviour last year and didn’t play a game. Wonder what happened there?

In regards to the club captain that has changed clubs, they have joined another former teammate at that club. I can say the club they have departed is another struggling with numbers. Footy is not all rosy at this time in the EFNL despite what you may hear.

Got your years mixed up?
5 games in 2023.

Purchased a house down on the peninsula & got more involved in the Port Adelaide recruiting/scouting program

Was never playing in 2024.

Robbie's knees must have instantly recovered. He may be able to play a few games, but the season is questionable. He would be a great addition to any club simply because of what he can bring in knowledge and experience.

Thanks Bobby Beecroft for that. I must be getting old. Would be nice to have him around the club still especially with numbers being somewhat disappointing at the time.

Could certainly be used as a recruitment tool to attract players.

Good fellow!

That’s two of us getting old!!

Robbie was great for the club when he had time available. As you say a fantastic guy and watching him was fun, did some nice things in his limited time on the field that set him apart.

Would be a great get wherever he ends up, but bare in mind it will not be for a full season. Unless things have changed.
