Two major issues:
  • Why cant our mids score goals?
  • Why cant our small forwards score enough goals?
My 2 cents worth Ag:
  • Why cant our mids score goals? They’re probably working hard between the arcs but worried if they push too far forward (within scoring range) it will leave us exposed on turnover. We mostly have inside mids but not many outside running types like the Hawks, Brisbane etc.

  • Why cant our small forwards score enough goals? They’re not natural forwards and lack key attributes - Fogarty (mostly defensive), Motlop gets caught a lot but he’s young and getting better, Cottrell can bob up for a goal now and then but to me does a lot of running with little impact. Williams showed promise last year as a forward but looks out of form.

Because Cripps has been in the ruck rather than resting forward and we traded the only other mid who kicked goals?

1 & 2 - our team pushes up to high in forward press. So focussed on holding the ball in

It leaves no room for a forward to lead without being surrounded, or for a small forward to run into space.

Mids clog space also, focussed on tackles & keeping the ball in.

We rarely break out the front of stoppage, typically moving sideways or back to move forward - giving oppo the chance to fold back.

Our defensive, contest built game plan is too single minded.

We need to hold our shape behind the ball without clogging F50 - also making sure we limit rebound out the back.

We need to hold our shape across the field for scoring & defence.

Watch Adelaide & Hawthorn run to support transitioning forward - always an open & effective forward line in transition.

Turn it over & they get you out the back.

How to overcome - great skills.

I can only assume our gameplan matches our “strengths” & our limitations.

Focus on contest & protecting the field - because we don’t have the foot skills to transition without turnover.

We have a list issue, before we can effectively change the game plan.

Way too tall down back, Haynes needs to come out. Think Cooper was stiff to loose his spot was one of the better users with ball in hand last week.
Really hope Carroll gets a full game very Newman like with ball use, who we have missed badly.
Agree on most - although Cooper hand balled in hope a few times over his head last week - he hadn’t done that before.

Usually great by hand.

Maybe he’d blown up?

This is gonna sound weird BUT if you are the Carlton supporter who was at a playground in Christie's Beach this morning with your son whose name starts with B - my sons are really really mad at me for not getting your details so we can do a playdate.

If you're on here and you're keen, please shoot me a PM. I'm not a creep I promise.
Oh me too!
If you are that palamino horse I galloped with along the surf beach, give a whinnie.😊💙🐎

Yeah sure, unless your team can’t dispose of the ball effectively….

Then we’re in the turn over business.
I’d prefer some short term pain for longer term rewards….currently we are losing anyway - real tuff for us to get back into top 8 from here imo.

If we accept/agree we need a change of game plan then let’s get stuck into it

Ideally they would have made the necessary list changes last year.

Agreed.

I’d love to see them take it in more despite the risk.

Watch the reactions in here though when it inevitably doesn’t come off ;).

If we continue playing like we did in first halves against dogs and filth games and try and fix our 2nd half fades but still lost the game I’d still be happy.

I just want to see improvement in how we play. The wins will come and it will be more sustainable.
