Trade period saw clubs wrestle back some control with multiple players being held to contract. Biggest winners and losers for this year?

interesting that a st kilda supporter started this thread

Losers
-North, unfortunately kept Jy
-Merrett
-Aleer
-Marshall
-Managers telling players to sign the long term deal, as it doesn't matter as they will organize a move anyways if you become unhappy

Winners
-Bigfooty ad revenue, having people argue like they believe they are list managers probably caused an uptick whoever hosts this site is rubbing his hands
-Gold coast adding Petracca to the midfield
-Melbourne with the reset
-Collingwood dodging a bullet with Jy

If Brisbane can get 15+ games each a year from Allen and Draper they win. GCS maybe win for a year or 2 but their wins are through their academy. Surprised they even bothered trading at all. They could have gone for pick 1, got Duursma then got their 3 academy kids.

None of the next top 7 teams got anything done.

The lesser clubs have shuffled things around which will make 2026 somewhat interesting for casual observers. One team completely shot itself in the foot because of ego. Will be interesting to see where the list management team end up going after the draft. All of the Roos list managers quit a few years ago when the board meddled.

I'm now trying to figure out how Carlton has grabbed more than 20% of their 2026 starting 18 from us....for the grand price of a slab of KB Lager and half a kilo of prawns. Newman, George, Florent, Hayward....some v.solid pickups for the price.
Winners and Losers: No club stands out so i'll say Dons the big loser. Coz they deserve that every trade period.

Winners
Demons - Did what they could to reset their list and rebuild fast. Trading in Steele and getting out Oliver was a very good move towards improving their club professionalism.
Swans - Set themselves up to get back into finals with Curnow.
Freo - Probably did the best without losing anyone in their best 22 while bringing in a decent player and manoeuvring to take who they want in the draft.

Losers
Hawks - Lost 3 players and fumbled hard getting their no.1 target.
Pies - Lost their best key forward and replaced with a rookie.
Dogs - Failed to bring in their biggest need in the trade period.

I feel like Sydney belongs in both columns.

Got Curnow, but at a hell of a price.

If we avoid defensive injuries and the academy trio land ready to go, we should be OK. But its one hell of a gamble. We've essentially locked in our team for the next 3 years

Biggest losers definitely Carlton for not sacking Voss.

Cost them Curnow and they will just end up sacking Voss 10 weeks into next year.

If they had have changed coaches and had a good trade period, identifying players to fill needs, they could have bounced next year and been competitive.

As it is they've lost 2 of their best 5 players and recruited a heap of spuds plus Hayward on a dud contract.

Should see them missing finals for a good 5 years.

Dees are big winners. They’ve given King a fresh start without the Oliver and Petracca sideshows and got a great return for Petracca. Steele gives them a great character addition.

Only thing that would have made it better would have been someone taking May off their hands. Wouldn’t be surprised if they bite the bullet and delist him.

Someone is annoyed Geelong didn't get Curnow

Winnners: Melb for resetting and gaining some good draft capital
GWS picked up Oliver for a steal and didnt lose anyone.
Swans for getting rid of Haywood and Goulding and Curnow will help with structure.
Saints had the right idea just not great players they have picked up.

What price have they paid? Would have used their picks on academy kids, which they still get and now have Petracca. 🤡

If WCE do the right thing and use pick 1 to bid on their 1st player, then take Duursma, then use pick 2 on their 2nd player, then take maybe the best WA player if there are any, GCS simply do not have the points to match.

Clubs seem to just let other clubs get their F/S and Academy kids cheap. If the AFL wont make clubs pay properly, why arent the clubs doing it?
