Preview 2026 AFL Draft General Discussion

Humphrey is clearly in hindsight now but I would have gone with Wardlaw at that time, powerful midfielder who can go forward and kick goals much like Reid. He might have still picked up those injuries at West Coast. Ginbey was pretty good early but has stalled and question mark over Hewett.

And Wardlaw is a mess with recurring injuries.

As you said, Sheezel would have left.

And Humphrey at 2 in hindsight may have worked.

Does not sound like a massive stuff up at all splitting for Ginbey and Hewett.

Eagles knew they wouldn't be getting the assistance the expansion clubs were getting and needed volume of 1st round talent. And the three mentioned at pick 2 all had issues / question marks.

The Eagles needed to sort this out, not the AFL, so they split picks.

And I suggest if they didn't split those picks the AFL would not look at helping later if needed. IMO we were told to sort this out on our own (fair call) and we did the best we could.

The pick 3 split and missing Jagga. Let's just see how that pans out over time. He looks flashy and gets alot of ball, but he is small.

Eagles needed quality experience and got it with Baker, now joint captain.

Can't remember exactly - 14 goals to 4???

Can't wait to see the stats from the BOG...at a guess - 25 possessions, 10 marks, 3 goals and 35 HO....enormous game/influence

Nickname initials TMH?

where do we even get to see stats for the talent league games? I can only select it as a competition in match centre on my phone and not desktop, and the games apparently haven't started...

how can they be so bad at keeping us in the loop if they want the draft to be this big thing every year

You're doing well, I can't find the link to the live streans or anythingm it's total bullshit as usual by the AFL

Live stream links are seemingly only available for some games. No commentary and no live scores or stats.

At what point will the AFL value the elite junior competitions?

absolute ****ing joke, heaven forbid I want to watch some junior footy. I will have to just attend the WAFL games in person this year if I can't at least watch Coates

SANFL App not too bad. Live scores, player & team stats etc. If subscribed you get the live game footage and pretty good commentary.
SA seem to have their shit together regarding their pathways and provide excellent coverage for their prospects.

How much mid clock did Butler get today? Read he scored 5, but no one is ever going to be doubting his ability to be an elite AFL small forward. His draft stock and whether or not he pushes into pick 1 conversation depends fully on his mid performances

Last year they loaded stats that night or next day and replay usually next day.

Very early days but is there any general view on the strength of this draft crop (ie 2025 being somewhat weak, 2024 being stacked and deep)?

In between those two in my view. Cochrane and Walker project better than Duursma. Few good talls as well.

Will be a long time before we see a draft as deep as 2024.

I think draft strength can be determined by the states outside of Victoria.
Vic normally accounts for the majority of draftees each year so you know the talent is always there, but it's the depth of SA, WA and Allies prospects that can really elevate the overall talent pool.

The Crows list boss is already on record saying that this years SA crop of prospects projects better than their 2025 predecessors which means they'll be real strong come Championships time again and will bat pretty deep.

WA have some good talls and a plethora of exciting small forwards so they'll be competative.

Allies IMO probably aren't as strong as previous years.

Overall I think this 2026 draft crop will be pretty strong and provides great depth to select a myriad of various prospect types depending on club needs and I'd be trying to load up on young talent in all areas before Tassie comes in as drafting will become even more compromised.

I didn’t get to watch the full game but whenever I saw him he was in the midfield, kicked a nice one from long range from the centre bounce

He split his time pretty evenly early, started on ball and was decent there to begin with. Then went up forward about 10 mins into the 1st qtr and he had 5 shots on goal for 3.1 + an oof against some poor skinny fella who'd been matched up on him within about 6 minutes.

Spent most of his time on ball after that from what I could tell with a few stints forward but they put a lot more time into him after the first quarter when he drifted up fwd.
