DE Koning transfer has the potential of surpassing Bill Barrot and Hannebery for stupidity.
Barrot and Hanners were great players in their day, but were well past it by the time they came to us- just another dumb Saints thing which this club has been prone to do. TDK will be a good long-term player for us, but it was a lot of $$ for a guy who isn't really elite.

Does anyone want to litigate what we could have had instead if we had not acquired Hannebury?

(Spoiler alert: not very much. Sydney didn't do much with what we gave up.)

We could have paid Lonie and Gresham even more money.

Hannebery was worth it just to stop the spuds from being even more overpaid than they already were.

Look at the list from back then lol, some very lucky footballers getting paid way more than they should have been

The trade included almost no risk. Yep, he didn't play much at all. When he played, we looked better. He played in a win in a final for St Kilda, something only 21 other blokes can say in the last 15 seasons.

As mistakes go, it was a minor one indeed.

Maybe we did chase Serong but he wanted to go to Sydney.
To add to this I think the issue with Serong was he wanted to see out his contract and make it at Hawthorn when Battle went there.

Then when he was out of contract, we'd already recruited Tauru, Barrat and were no doubt in talks with JSOS. We'd also grabbed guys like Boxshall and Hastie who could play that running type of tall wing.

I'd say its more of a bad timing thing that anything else.

He has played four games.
Wrong. We have multiple time travelers on this forum, each with detailed information on the future. However instead of bringing information of the killer AIs that will hunt us down instead they bring the grim news that we are all morons for not judging players on a 4 game stretch against 3 of last years finalists including two prelim makers one of which was the eventual flag winner.

If a club wants to climb up the ladder, then it needs to beat some or all last year's finalists, otherwise it's a feeble excuse for failure...then again we're the Saints, and close enough is good enough.

doesn't really matter what other clubs did with the picks as we probably would've done something different

but if you want to play that game, the future 2nd we gave up was on-traded to Adelaide who used it to pick Josh Worrell from the Sandy Dragons

All teams, even grand final winners, have patches of poor, good and excellent form and they don't always align to whims or fantasy lands of black and white.

My prediction of the TDK recruitment is that by the end of this season the media narrative will be that Carlton should have retained him.

King was the 8th highest paid player in the game last year according to the age lol.

Interestingly Steele in the top 20, makes sense as to why we wanted him off the books to fit NAS and De Koning etc.

Do we draft Worrell if we still had the pick and just traded for Dougal Howard?

The same Josh Worrell who should have been a St Kilda NGA after being born in England.

Ah - the irony.

Yeah he may stick around developing for another 1-3 years but once he is ready to be the main man he is gone. We're not going to get a huge trade haul for an uncontracted backup ruck. He's not going to sign a long extension and give us the option of holding him to play a support role like we did with Marshall.

Nobody is going to take on TDK's contract unless we're paying a 600k+ share of it. I'm not fretting about Dodson, I just think it's inevitable and was a forseeable downside of the TDK contract.
I guess we’ll see a few years down the track.
But Roma definitely looks like he’s slowing down, he’s going to ask to go to Cats again end of season. We couldn’t rely on Keeler and Dodson to be our only rucks.

Re cotracts - well as you know you have to pay plenty to attract players and Tdk is in the right age group for our build. Of course it’s a lot of $$$ but again, I’m not sure we had too much of a choice though.

Just like NAS. Is he really a $2 million player? Not to me. Certainly not yet. But again, no choice. We couldn’t afford to lose him.

I reckon the definition of 'fretting' is going on and on about something :tearsofjoy:

Don't search 'Dodson' or 'TDK' in your own post history 🙃

We don't even know if Dodson is going to be a gun AFL player lol.

He has shown some promising signs, of course, but you're talking as a matter of fact, when it is just hyperbole to most.

It's okay Mad bloke ;)

So you give no credence at all to a team needing to gel when it’s brought in four new important players and a couple of draftees?

Plus a hundred at Carlton. Much like at Carlton, he seems to be a pretty good player for us. Not a top 5 ruck in the comp, but pretty good. It's absolutely insane to pay 1.7mil over 8 years to recruit a pretty good 26 year old ruckman

I agree. But this has to be looked at in the context of the bigger picture, improving the list and trying to climb the ladder when the odds aren’t exactly in our favour doing it the traditional way.

It’s still early days, but I can already see a world where this blows up in our face.

At the same time, the club was pretty open about the fact it was willing to take risks.

Well said. When anyone in the media talks about how much we’re spending on TDK and NAS I wish talk about what we should have done instead and which players we should have got instead.
Keep in mind that the banked cap space had to be used or we’d lose it. No option of hang onto it for another year or two.
Maybe we could have got Gresh and Acres back on $2 mill a year?

The AFL media doesnt exist to have genuine or fair discussions, they exist like their parent company to make money and thats about it. Click bait articles, razor thin arguments based on emotion etc.. are all there because they drive engagement and clicks first and foremost.

It’s not just AFL media. I’ve just decided not renew my subscription to the Age after 30+ years because I’m sick click bait headlines telling about the latest ‘crisis’. They tried to justify nearly doubling the price because ‘the cost of providing quality journalism has increased dramatically’ apparently.
