I think you are exactly right.

They have finally realised that Sharman and Owens cant play the 1st or 2nd tall forward roles. Howard struggled with match fitness last weekend but he is no worse than Caminiti at FB.

Its also raises concerns for Barrat the club obviously believe he is no where ready to step up.

It was interesting that Lenny Hofmann had a blinder in the VFL last weekend in Geelongs VFL win over Box Hill. Still has a way to go, but I always thought it was a mistake over looking this kid. He is the classic under sized Geelong key defender who can play well above his height ala Wilkie. When you think we took an ordinary under sized ruckman Boyd (delisted after 1 game) with our remaining list position, Hofmann is looking good.
Barrat seems to be improving, l tend to agree on Lenny, reckon Gellong will get him going good.

Just to discuss the flip side to this.

Kane calls it one of the worst contracts in the keague.

This contract is why we would get a First round pick and probably in the top 10 for him
Sorry I'm a bit slow..
Can you explain the above to me?
I would have thought with that contract we would get absolutely nought and have to cough up at least half the remaining cost,

No one is giving a 1st round pick for a bloke that hasn't played for 2 years

But highly doubt he is going anywhere, it will be us or retirement imo

But wouldn't the length and value of the unexpired part of yhe contract also lessen any trade value?
A big chunk of money from the contract was paid last year, in between $1.4 & 1.6

But yes it goes to the end 2032 which is crazy with his history. No one is taking that on unless we are paying a huge amount of it

My mother always said “it’s too soon to panic.”.
Very much doubt he’s going anywhere.

That contract has been front loaded.

It’s going to be well below 900k going forward.

The only example in the last decade isJoe Daniher, who played 15 games across 3 seasons. He still landed Essendon band 1 compo. Which means he was paid in the top 5% in the league when he moved off the back of that as his recent history.

But its not

Reported from many different sources its 1.1 + a year
It’s a FRONT LOADED deal.

The contract extension of St Kilda’s injury-cursed big man Max King continues to be shoved into the spotlight after yesterday’s revelation that the full-forward was most likely paid $1.4-1.6 million last year for a total of zero games.

The AFL released its player wages data yesterday which revealed 58 players were paid more than $1 million last season and two players earned more than $1.6 million.

There were four players in the $1.4-1.6 million bracket with the data revealing that only three of those players featured in games last year.

Yep and even at $1.6 last year it still makes it a million + a year

If you believe whats been reported

He will be paid a minimum between 1.2 - 1.6 again this year and the next few apparently. By the last half of the deal (end of 2028) it’s well under $1m.

AB said in pre season at the player sponsor event for all those who chatted with him that our cap has room for more and that any existing long term deals - ie King have been heavily front loaded and that they are well below their average contract amount by the time those deals hit the second half of their contracts.

(I’m assuming he wasn’t referring to TDK or Nas, but I have no idea on this front)

So if he wanted to ask for a trade and let’s assume it’s next year. Because no one is touching a bloke who can’t get on the park.

He will have been paid 3 of his 8 years at well over $1m.

We dont need more soldiers , we need more class , if you really think blokes like Dow , Henry and Byrnes are going to make us better you and me could not see the game more differently

How many Byrnes, Dow or Henry types do the Lions have in their Team ?

Class can shine when some of the grunt does the dishes and leaves the stove to the chefs. We have guys like Nas who is class unable to work because when he gets tagged, no-one else steps up and spreads the load.

on the weekend we played arguably our most experienced side.

The Lions - with Andrews and Mcluggage not playing were still on average 1 year older then us and 1 FULL SEASON of games on average more than us.

The issue was never ever losing to the Lions - it was 100% dropping Melbourne and arguably the Pies.

WE have been in every game by under 6 points or hit the front with 15 minutes to go in the final quarter of every loss so far.

So to circle back to your point, Its what we have that needs to keep rising. I think at this point we can all agree we are "better".Its just not enough and as frustrating as it is - we need to keep giving opportunities to what we have.

Must Win next weekend

Well the midfield wasn't. When Flanders is your oldest and most experienced and he's not played much there or played 100 games yet, you are not a hardened unit. Two key pieces were under 50 games. Even Nas has half a season and hasn't played 100 games yet.

who are the others ?

Hall, 2026 Hill, Sinclair, Wilkie. Flanders should be but been a bit NQR so far. Wilson and Windy getting closer. I know people are down on him but I think Sharman has class.

Yep that's on the money

Agree Sharman is fine imo and would be even better with King out there as would Owens

It fits neatly into the “everything this club does is wrong” trope that an amazing amount of fans bizarrely seem to find comfort in.
Plenty with short memories here that can't tell the difference when we really DID do everything wrong.

Its not surprising that we as fans are desperately disappointed by the start to the year but ultimately, I think the media have created a firestorm and we are the lowest of low hanging fruit.

It was always going to take some time for us to gel and we haven't been handed any favours with the fixture. Weve been in every game up to our eyeballs. We were horrid against the dees and shoudlve run the pies closer. This year was always going to be a tricky year with the influx of new personnel, younger core and fixture. Add to that the uncertain with Max and its a perfect storm.

Honestly, we've been better than I thought we'd be but we desperately need Pou and Wilson to kick on as Stav pointed out. If Pou doesn't become an A grade mid, we are in real strife. Im not enamoured by the Flanders pick but I understand the logic as soon as it became clear that Trav was a slow burn.

Im glad Ross is in charge to wear the intense media heat in at this stage however there's no two ways about it, we need to see some progress in the back half of the year together with some wins against top 6 to 8 teams.

Every week I think about young Murphy Reid in the tri colours and trav playing for very likely GWS. Was so blindingly obvious to so many.

Add that one to our greatest hits, Reid is absolutely everything we thought he could be and trav was better in his first vfl game for Carlton as 16/17yo than he is now and will have 80 shit games shoved down his throat before we see some okay footy very likely off hbf.

Was going collect what I said about trav and Reid but I’m too sad for I told you so’s. What could’ve been.. 🫩

I can’t watch Jobe Shanahan play because I feel the same way about him. We could have split that pick and gotten them both. Shanahan looks better than Tauru even.
The fella that moved to Richmond and sadly passed away seemed to make the best draft selections.
