THE ROOKIE ROOM! - FORWARDS + RUCKS
This is PART 3 of a 3 part Rookie Ratings series where we talk all things rookies. These are based on role, job security, scoring profile and price, not just hype. It's exactly what you need to fill up those early rookie spots in your drafts!
Important caveat before the pitchforks come out, this is all pre unofficial practice matches and pre Community Series. Once we see teams roll out properly, everything could flip on its head very quickly. But as of today, this is the most accurate and up to date defender rookie landscape you’ll get. Things will change, but this is where we stand right now!
RUCKS:
Liam Reidy ($119,900) – Carlton![]()
The early noise out of Carlton suggesting Reidy could overtake Pittonet as the number one ruck has cooled noticeably over the past week. His AFL career to date has been fairly underwhelming, but the underlying numbers are interesting where he was averaging 107 fantasy points after Round 2 in the 2’s last year. This suggests there may be more upside than first meets the eye. His DPP status is handy, but Carlton’s love of early games makes him a poor looping option if he’s not selected. Feels like one that could burn you either way. Trap potential.
Round 1 Confidence: 4/10![]()
Mitchell Edwards ($119,900) – Geelong![]()
A super raw ruckman who was drafted back in 2023 but has played very limited football since managing just 3 VFL games in 2024 and 7 in 2025 while averaging a modest 48 fantasy points. That said, there’s genuine noise coming out of Geelong that they rate him highly. With Stanley flirting with retirement and Conway perpetually injured, that might translate into an opportunity at some point. Round 1 though does feel like a stretch. Unlikely.
Round 1 Confidence: 2/10![]()
Lachlan McAndrew ($119,900) – Adelaide
McAndrew and O’Brien have rotated between the A and B sides throughout preseason, which at least suggests he’s in the conversation. The obvious knock has always been his endurance, but does the extra bench spot this year become his saving grace? His SANFL season was excellent, averaging 97 fantasy points from 16 games, and he even managed a couple of AFL games at Sydney in 2023 while still very raw. There’s definite upside here if things fall his way. We might get lucky.
Round 1 Confidence: 3/10![]()
FORWARDS
Sam Butler ($197,000) – Hawthorn![]()
An incredible comeback story after a horrific leg break, Butler’s return season was quietly very strong. In the four VFL games before his first recall, he averaged 121 fantasy points, and after being dropped again, followed it up with another three game stretch averaging 120. He didn’t fully capitalise on his chances early, but his finals performance against Adelaide (15 touches, 5 marks, 2 goals, 9 tackles) showed he can do it at AFL level. The big question is what is his role? Is it midfield minutes or stuck on a wing? Either way, he feels undervalued. Underrated pick.
Round 1 Confidence: 9/10![]()
Cooper Duff-Tytler ($190,000) – West Coast![]()
A highly athletic, mobile forward with serious upside who can even pinch hit in the ruck. All reports suggest he’s likely to feature early at West Coast. The issue is his role, while playing as a deep forward in a rebuilding side rarely screams SuperCoach value, especially at this price point. The talent is there, but the setup isn’t. Not for me.
Round 1 Confidence: 7/10![]()
Mattaes Phillipou ($168,400) – St Kilda![]()
I genuinely don’t understand how anyone is still knocking this guy. His ceiling is absurd, and we get him at rookie pricing. If he was priced at $300k, he’d probably still be 40% owned. He’s right there with Jagga Smith as the easiest pick of 2026. Don’t overthink it. Lock him away.
Round 1 Confidence: 10/10![]()
Brayden Cook ($158,700) – Adelaide
A bit of a left field option after an inconsistent AFL career so far, but there’s a lot to like structurally. Now 23, big bodied, with handy DPP, and there was already noise about a potential move behind the ball even before Keane’s injury. That injury could now open the door. A defensive role would be far kinder to his scoring than the wing/forward mix he’s had previously and worst case, there’s still a wing spot available at the Crows this year. Watchlist.
Round 1 Confidence: 5/10![]()
Todd Marshall ($147,900) – Port Adelaide![]()
Another extremely straightforward rookie selection. Marshall’s switch from key forward to key defender this off season should significantly help both his job security and scoring profile. He’s already been trusted with the odd kick in during pre season, and his intercept work, spoils and leadership from the back half have impressed. This one just makes sense. Yes.
Round 1 Confidence: 9/10![]()
Lachy Dovaston ($136,000) – North Melbourne![]()
Should get opportunities in 2026, but small forwards playing for bottom teams rarely inspire SuperCoach confidence. His speed and pressure are elite, but consistency has always been the concern, so when consistency is exactly what we need for cash generation it feels like a pass unless things drastically change. Not for me.
Round 1 Confidence: 9/10![]()
Harvey Harrison ($126,000) – Collingwood![]()
A sneaky option that feels heavily slept on after missing all of last year with an ACL. He showed enough at AFL level in 2024 to suggest he belongs, and his draft profile highlights accumulation and clearance work which are areas Collingwood still need help with. While being previously used as a forward, he still managed a spike score of 99. If he sneaks some midfield time, this could get interesting quickly. I like it.
Round 1 Confidence: 7/10![]()
Leo Lombard ($119,900) – Gold Coast![]()
Averaged 26 disposals per game during the U18 Championships, which shows exactly why he came in with such strong pedigree. With Budarick and Rosas gone, Lombard should slide straight into the Suns’ best 23. He even averaged 104 SuperCoach points per game while playing VFL as a midfielder last season. The role might not be as ideal this year, but Gold Coast’s favourable early fixture gives him every chance to generate cash even as a forward. Safe pick.
Round 1 Confidence: 9/10![]()
Jasper Alger ($119,900) – Richmond![]()
Another young Tiger who’s reportedly been flying on the track. Played four AFL games last year, averaging just 23 SuperCoach points, though two were sub affected. His VFL output was modest at best averaging 52 fantasy points from 13 games. While he looks likely to play Round 1, forward rookies aren’t scarce enough this year to force this pick. Last resort.
Round 1 Confidence: 7/10![]()
Deven Robertson ($119,900) – West Coast![]()
Unlikely to walk straight into West Coast’s midfield, but the rule is simple: if he’s named Round 1, you pick him. He averaged 102 fantasy points from 15 VFL games last year and was always on the fringe of a premiership calibre side at Brisbane. Appears to be ahead of Macrae and Schoenberg right now, and should get a mixed role across midfield, wing and forward. Yes.
Round 1 Confidence: 8/10![]()
Tobyn Murray ($113,500) – Fremantle
Who doesn’t love a mature ager? Fremantle drafted Murray with a role in mind, and everything he’s shown on the track so far suggests he’s ready to step straight in. His burst from stoppage and forward half chain involvement have stood out. His scoring at VFL level was modest (60 fantasy from 17 games), but mature agers can improve rapidly once exposed to AFL systems. The only concern is fitting him into an already deep rookie structure. Watch list.

Have I missed any Forward or Ruck Rookie options you’re keen on?
West AdelaideBevo loves his VFL battlers, lock him in for round 1.
That's a strategy quite a few will take. Marshall, Pou, Lombard, DevRob all look very likely. Few others a chance too, Murray, Newton, Pickett if you are prepared to take small forwards. Reidy even lol.For those heavily invested this preseason, how are the FWD rookies/cheapies looking?
I'm tempted to take 6 cheapies behind Sheez and Flanders, obviously provided the cheap options are worth it.
Hate the forward picks. If the cheapies look OK, I'd get a chance to see how the FWD premo landscape shapes up.
I’m only taking Sheez and Flanders. Allows me to load up on premos on other lines. For those heavily invested this preseason, how are the FWD rookies/cheapies looking?

Trac a good option too though if you can handle the bye.

Then there is the unique horn, FOMO is stalking me already. That's a strategy quite a few will take. Marshall, Pou, Lombard, DevRob all look very likely. Few others a chance too, Murray, Newton, Pickett if are prepared to take small forwards. Reidy even lol.

Harrison for the pies will play barring any injury setbacks as well, think he will get first go at Bobby hills spotThat's a strategy quite a few will take. Yeah hard to get a read on the Suns. There has actually been a guy posting track watcher stuff this year, but they have been spinning the magnets a lot. Thanks mate.
Trac's a strange one. Not sure how the mid rotations are going to work at the Suns. Surely they want to give Humpa more time on-ball. Touk won't just roll over and become a full time forward. There's a lot of points to be shared around in that side. At this stage I'm not keen. A 150 in OR would change my mind![]()
Looking that way, Parker (my pick) looks like missing out according to reports.Harrison for the pies will play barring any injury setbacks as well, think he will get first go at Bobby hills spot
This happens when you have AEOR.Yeah hard to get a read on the Suns. There has actually been a guy posting track watcher stuff this year, but they have been spinning the magnets a lot.
Anderson and Touk playing half back in match sim (giving A Bit Dusty a stiffy), Read on the wing, Uwland on the wing, Lombard on the wing (insert Oprah gif). Trac getting a lot of mid time at training.
Nearly every post on socials has been JUH involved, but it seems he's been in the B team a bit too. Rogers will probably be an option too as a small forward who is reasonably cheap. So hard to know though. The early draw is amazing, probably want a couple of Suns guys, but which ones?
![]()
Was hoping Parker would start as well, hopefully grabs a spot a bit later on then. Think there are better options than roan at 198k but pre season might show differentlyLooking that way, Parker (my pick) looks like missing out according to reports.
Steele (Roan) looking solid 23 to me. Mentioned him before but $198K is there enough meat on the bone?
