THE ROOKIE ROOM! - MIDFIELDERS

This is PART 2 of a 3 part Rookie Ratings series where we talk all things rookies. These are based on role, job security, scoring profile and price, not just hype. It's exactly what you need to fill up those early rookie spots in your drafts!
Important caveat before the pitchforks come out, this is all pre unofficial practice matches and pre Community Series. Once we see teams roll out properly, everything could flip on its head very quickly. But as of today, this is the most accurate and up to date defender rookie landscape you’ll get. Things will change, but this is where we stand right now!

🦅
Williem Duursma ($203,500) – West Coast
The #1 pick brings elite aerial ability, huge ground coverage and high end athleticism. With Jayden Hunt departing, a wing spot has clearly opened up and based on how Duursma has been used in match simulation, it feels like that role is his to lose. He’s in a similar boat to Uwland, but the price is the sticking point. West Coast’s draw and overall team strength doesn't compare to Gold Coast's, so it’s tough to justify paying north of $200k for a rookie wing when cheaper options exist. Not for me.
Round 1 Confidence: 10/10
🔒

🦁
Daniel Annable ($181,000) – Brisbane
One of the most exciting pure fantasy prospects in this draft lands at arguably the worst possible club for early opportunity. Annable’s work rate and accumulation are elite, averaging close to 25 disposals per game at U18 level and his composed, inside style screams SuperCoach scoring. The problem? Brisbane’s Best 23 is absolutely stacked. Levi Ashcroft showed it can be done, but it’s still a massive uphill battle. If he cracks the team, he’s gold, but that’s a big if right now. However, if today’s match sim while in the A’s is anything to go off, he’s crushing the battle!
Round 1 Confidence: 6/10
❓

🐯
Sam Cumming ($176,500) – Richmond
Another Richmond rookie where the Round 1 drumbeat is getting louder by the day. David King’s “Ferraris everywhere at Punt Road” quote feels fitting, and Cumming is very much one of them. He averaged 17 disposals and a goal per game at U18 level, showing he’s a modern, damaging type. The concern is the role, if he’s not used inside, an outside or half forward role could limit his accumulation and scoring given his uncontested weaknesses. Watchlist.
Round 1 Confidence: 6/10
❓

🔴
Dyson Sharp ($149,500) – Essendon
An early set and forget rookie for many, though I’m starting to cool slightly due to role uncertainty. Caldwell’s injury could open things up, but it’s still not locked in. That said, Sharp was the #1 fantasy prospect in the draft, averaging 27 disposals and nearly 1.5 goals per game at U18 level. He’s physically ready, has a massive frame (I ran into him at Coles and pwoah) and just needs to refine his outside game if he’s not used as a full time inside mid. Good enough for now.
Round 1 Confidence: 7/10
✅

🐦‍⬛
Sid Draper ($126,100) – Adelaide
Currently sitting in around 50% of teams thanks to handy DPP status, but realistically he’s an outside chance at best for Round 1. Nicks has already flagged a cautious and long term approach, with Draper only just returning to full training this week, so he is more likely a downgrade target around Rounds 5 to 6. Draper averaged 95 SuperCoach points in the SANFL last year, and his draft profile suggests that output is very real. Jump on whenever he’s in!
Round 1 Confidence: 2/10
❌

🐦‍⬛
Chayce Jones ($119,900) – Adelaide
The former #9 pick enters his 8th AFL season as he is still trying to fully cement a role. Due to just 5 sub appearances last year, we get him at basement price, which is certainly intriguing. In 2023 he played 18 games at an average of 73, which would be an awesome return at this price. With Dan Curtin injured, there’s a wing spot available and Jones is firmly in the conversation for that fringe best 23 role. Watch closely.
Round 1 Confidence: 5/10
❓

🐦‍⬛
Charlie Edwards ($119,900) – Adelaide
Edwards finds himself in a very similar battle, likely competing with Jones and Brayden Cook for that final wing or utility spot. Yet to debut, which complicates things, but he brings more size and upside which is closer to the Curtin style wing role Adelaide used last year. He averaged 17 disposals in the Coates Talent League, which is respectable, however he seems like a longer term play at the moment while playing in the B’s.
Round 1 Confidence: 3/10
❌

🔵
Jagga Smith ($119,900) – Carlton
Jagga probably doesn’t even belong in an article like this. Just pick him and move on. He is a genuine future midfield premium available for just $119k. He averaged 29 disposals for Vic Metro and 34 touches for Oakleigh while also being consistently among Carlton’s best performers throughout preseason match sim so far. Absolute jet.
Round 1 Confidence: 10/10
🔒

🩵
Will Brodie ($119,900) – Port Adelaide
As someone who didn’t own Brodie in 2022 when he averaged 102 as a forward, seeing him as an option again hurts a lot. No Ollie Wines early opens the door, but the fear is obvious, he could be named Round 1 and then straight out once Wines returns. Brodie averaged 88 fantasy points in the SANFL (excluding his injured game), so the scoring is still there. He is one of those picks you’ll hate yourself for taking and hate yourself more if you don’t.
Round 1 Confidence: 6/10
❓

🐯
Patrick Retschko ($119,900) – Richmond
I’m honestly shocked Geelong let this one walk. He felt like the next in line after the Cats’ usual VFL to AFL incubation process. Yes his ball use can be hit or miss, but his endurance, size and outside run are all excellent. He was one of the better VFL wingers last season and averaged 77 fantasy points last season including 88 across his final 4 games. He looks to have McIntosh’s wing role from last year already locked up.
Round 1 Confidence: 8/10
✅

🐯
Josh Smillie ($119,900) – Richmond
Smillie is rapidly turning into an AFL enigma thanks to an unfortunate injury history as he managed just 4 VFL games last year before his season ended, averaging only 53 fantasy points. There have been minor hiccups again this preseason, which isn’t ideal, but the upside is ridiculous. He averaged 24 disposals in the Coates League and his size + agility combo is elite. If he’s named Round 1, he’ll be impossible to pass up. High risk, high reward.
Round 1 Confidence: 5/10
❓

😇
Jack Carroll ($119,900) – St Kilda
He is clearly one of the most under the radar rookies this year. St Kilda have been searching for a half back flank partner for Jack Sinclair, and all signs suggest Carroll is right in the box seat. He has elite disposal efficiency, and while he couldn’t crack the Saints’ best 22 last year, he averaged 81 fantasy points for Sandy, including a massive 136. Somehow he is only in 6% of teams right now and this feels absurd. Watch this sky rocket over the coming weeks!
Round 1 Confidence: 7/10
✅

🦅
Finlay Macrae ($119,900) – West Coast
Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. This might well be attempt number four! The move to West Coast has reignited interest and he’s now in over 40% of teams, but early track watches aren’t encouraging as there appears to be several similar types ahead of him right now. He did however average 91 fantasy points across his last 13 VFL games, but it’s increasingly looking like that may be his level. Hard to avoid if named Round 1 though.
Round 1 Confidence: 2/10
❌

🦅
Harry Schoenberg ($119,900) – West Coast
Another fringe Eagle that SuperCoaches are sniffing around, though this one is only in 5% of sides, which is interesting given he may be closer to selection than Macrae. He once averaged 72 SuperCoach points from 22 games at Adelaide and finished that year with a 115, hinting at a breakout that never came. Now at a new club, he averaged 87 fantasy points in the SANFL last year, including 100 across his final 5 games. Right now he seems likely to just miss the best 23, but he’s close!
Round 1 Confidence: 4/10
❓

⚫️
Tyan Prindable ($113,500) – Collingwood
A rookie in just 1% of teams and I genuinely think has a better than 50% chance for Round 1, insane! We do obviously get to see Round 0 first, so if he’s named he’ll skyrocket instantly. Collingwood’s top pick last season looks ready made to step straight in. He averaged an impressive 20 disposals, 8 tackles and a goal in the Coates League, with endurance being the only knock. The extra bench spot this year should help cover that nicely and the Pies need the inside midfield help.
Round 1 Confidence: 6/10

THE ROOKIE ROOM! - FORWARDS + RUCKS

Things will change, but this is where we stand right now!

RUCKS:
🔵
Liam Reidy ($119,900) – Carlton
The early noise out of Carlton suggesting Reidy could overtake Pittonet as the number one ruck has cooled noticeably over the past week. His AFL career to date has been fairly underwhelming, but the underlying numbers are interesting where he was averaging 107 fantasy points after Round 2 in the 2’s last year. This suggests there may be more upside than first meets the eye. His DPP status is handy, but Carlton’s love of early games makes him a poor looping option if he’s not selected. Feels like one that could burn you either way. Trap potential.
Round 1 Confidence: 4/10
❓

🐱
Mitchell Edwards ($119,900) – Geelong
A super raw ruckman who was drafted back in 2023 but has played very limited football since managing just 3 VFL games in 2024 and 7 in 2025 while averaging a modest 48 fantasy points. That said, there’s genuine noise coming out of Geelong that they rate him highly. With Stanley flirting with retirement and Conway perpetually injured, that might translate into an opportunity at some point. Round 1 though does feel like a stretch. Unlikely.
Round 1 Confidence: 2/10
❌

Lachlan McAndrew ($119,900) – Adelaide
McAndrew and O’Brien have rotated between the A and B sides throughout preseason, which at least suggests he’s in the conversation. The obvious knock has always been his endurance, but does the extra bench spot this year become his saving grace? His SANFL season was excellent, averaging 97 fantasy points from 16 games, and he even managed a couple of AFL games at Sydney in 2023 while still very raw. There’s definite upside here if things fall his way. We might get lucky.
Round 1 Confidence: 3/10
❌

FORWARDS
🟤
Sam Butler ($197,000) – Hawthorn
An incredible comeback story after a horrific leg break, Butler’s return season was quietly very strong. In the four VFL games before his first recall, he averaged 121 fantasy points, and after being dropped again, followed it up with another three game stretch averaging 120. He didn’t fully capitalise on his chances early, but his finals performance against Adelaide (15 touches, 5 marks, 2 goals, 9 tackles) showed he can do it at AFL level. The big question is what is his role? Is it midfield minutes or stuck on a wing? Either way, he feels undervalued. Underrated pick.
✅
Round 1 Confidence: 9/10

🦅
Cooper Duff-Tytler ($190,000) – West Coast
A highly athletic, mobile forward with serious upside who can even pinch hit in the ruck. All reports suggest he’s likely to feature early at West Coast. The issue is his role, while playing as a deep forward in a rebuilding side rarely screams SuperCoach value, especially at this price point. The talent is there, but the setup isn’t. Not for me.
Round 1 Confidence: 7/10
✅

😇
Mattaes Phillipou ($168,400) – St Kilda
I genuinely don’t understand how anyone is still knocking this guy. His ceiling is absurd, and we get him at rookie pricing. If he was priced at $300k, he’d probably still be 40% owned. He’s right there with Jagga Smith as the easiest pick of 2026. Don’t overthink it. Lock him away.
Round 1 Confidence: 10/10
🔒

Brayden Cook ($158,700) – Adelaide
A bit of a left field option after an inconsistent AFL career so far, but there’s a lot to like structurally. Now 23, big bodied, with handy DPP, and there was already noise about a potential move behind the ball even before Keane’s injury. That injury could now open the door. A defensive role would be far kinder to his scoring than the wing/forward mix he’s had previously and worst case, there’s still a wing spot available at the Crows this year. Watchlist.
Round 1 Confidence: 5/10
❓

🩵
Todd Marshall ($147,900) – Port Adelaide
Another extremely straightforward rookie selection. Marshall’s switch from key forward to key defender this off season should significantly help both his job security and scoring profile. He’s already been trusted with the odd kick in during pre season, and his intercept work, spoils and leadership from the back half have impressed. This one just makes sense. Yes.
Round 1 Confidence: 9/10
✅

🦘
Lachy Dovaston ($136,000) – North Melbourne
Should get opportunities in 2026, but small forwards playing for bottom teams rarely inspire SuperCoach confidence. His speed and pressure are elite, but consistency has always been the concern, so when consistency is exactly what we need for cash generation it feels like a pass unless things drastically change. Not for me.
Round 1 Confidence: 9/10
✅

⚫️
Harvey Harrison ($126,000) – Collingwood
A sneaky option that feels heavily slept on after missing all of last year with an ACL. He showed enough at AFL level in 2024 to suggest he belongs, and his draft profile highlights accumulation and clearance work which are areas Collingwood still need help with. While being previously used as a forward, he still managed a spike score of 99. If he sneaks some midfield time, this could get interesting quickly. I like it.
Round 1 Confidence: 7/10
✅

☀️
Leo Lombard ($119,900) – Gold Coast
Averaged 26 disposals per game during the U18 Championships, which shows exactly why he came in with such strong pedigree. With Budarick and Rosas gone, Lombard should slide straight into the Suns’ best 23. He even averaged 104 SuperCoach points per game while playing VFL as a midfielder last season. The role might not be as ideal this year, but Gold Coast’s favourable early fixture gives him every chance to generate cash even as a forward. Safe pick.
Round 1 Confidence: 9/10
✅

🐯
Jasper Alger ($119,900) – Richmond
Another young Tiger who’s reportedly been flying on the track. Played four AFL games last year, averaging just 23 SuperCoach points, though two were sub affected. His VFL output was modest at best averaging 52 fantasy points from 13 games. While he looks likely to play Round 1, forward rookies aren’t scarce enough this year to force this pick. Last resort.
Round 1 Confidence: 7/10
✅

🦅
Deven Robertson ($119,900) – West Coast
Unlikely to walk straight into West Coast’s midfield, but the rule is simple: if he’s named Round 1, you pick him. He averaged 102 fantasy points from 15 VFL games last year and was always on the fringe of a premiership calibre side at Brisbane. Appears to be ahead of Macrae and Schoenberg right now, and should get a mixed role across midfield, wing and forward. Yes.
Round 1 Confidence: 8/10
✅

Tobyn Murray ($113,500) – Fremantle
Who doesn’t love a mature ager? Fremantle drafted Murray with a role in mind, and everything he’s shown on the track so far suggests he’s ready to step straight in. His burst from stoppage and forward half chain involvement have stood out. His scoring at VFL level was modest (60 fantasy from 17 games), but mature agers can improve rapidly once exposed to AFL systems. The only concern is fitting him into an already deep rookie structure. Watch list.
Round 1 Confidence: 7/10

Leo Lombard ($119,900) – Gold Coast
Averaged 26 disposals per game during the U18 Championships, which shows exactly why he came in with such strong pedigree. With Budarick and Rosas gone, Lombard should slide straight into the Suns’ best 23. He even averaged 104 SuperCoach points per game while playing VFL as a midfielder last season. The role might not be as ideal this year, but Gold Coast’s favourable early fixture gives him every chance to generate cash even as a forward. Safe pick.
Round 1 Confidence: 9/10

Have I missed any Forward or Ruck Rookie options you’re keen on?

If he's not named, he'll be an upgrade option.
Was talked about as a potential no 1 pick at the start of last year and we're desperate for a no 3 tallish defender. He wasn;t embarrased in recent match sim when rucking against English either.

Might not score too well but for cash generation when named he'll get a few weeks.

For those heavily invested this preseason, how are the FWD rookies/cheapies looking?

I'm tempted to take 6 cheapies behind Sheez and Flanders, obviously provided the cheap options are worth it.

Hate the forward picks. If the cheapies look OK, I'd get a chance to see how the FWD premo landscape shapes up.

That's a strategy quite a few will take. Marshall, Pou, Lombard, DevRob all look very likely. Few others a chance too, Murray, Newton, Pickett if you are prepared to take small forwards. Reidy even lol.

Trac a good option too though if you can handle the bye.

I’m only taking Sheez and Flanders. Allows me to load up on premos on other lines.

Thanks mate.

Trac's a strange one. Not sure how the mid rotations are going to work at the Suns. Surely they want to give Humpa more time on-ball. Touk won't just roll over and become a full time forward. There's a lot of points to be shared around in that side. At this stage I'm not keen. A 150 in OR would change my mind :D

Then there is the unique horn, FOMO is stalking me already.

Harrison for the pies will play barring any injury setbacks as well, think he will get first go at Bobby hills spot

Yeah hard to get a read on the Suns. There has actually been a guy posting track watcher stuff this year, but they have been spinning the magnets a lot.

Anderson and Touk playing half back in match sim (giving A Bit Dusty a stiffy), Read on the wing, Uwland on the wing, Lombard on the wing (insert Oprah gif). Trac getting a lot of mid time at training.

Nearly every post on socials has been JUH involved, but it seems he's been in the B team a bit too. Rogers will probably be an option too as a small forward who is reasonably cheap. So hard to know though. The early draw is amazing, probably want a couple of Suns guys, but which ones?

Matt Leblanc Whatever GIF

Looking that way, Parker (my pick) looks like missing out according to reports.

Steele (Roan) looking solid 23 to me. Mentioned him before but $198K is there enough meat on the bone?

This happens when you have AEOR.

Was hoping Parker would start as well, hopefully grabs a spot a bit later on then. Think there are better options than roan at 198k but pre season might show differently
