VFL 2026 Swans Reserves

Got out to Homebush this morning to watch the boys run around. Terrible place to watch footy I gotta say. Apparently they've upgraded their facilities to include a pool as well so I'd say that will be the venue for this type of game moving forward. It'll take some big names to get me back there.

Stayed 'til 3/4 time, at which point we were leading by 20, but really wasn't able to make much of individual performances.

Big Pistol Pete the standout for mine... reckon he's shown a fair bit of determination in the pre-season as well so there is still hope for him to make his mark.

Old Harry looked way above the level but showed a bit of rust late on as well. Got a couple of giggles out of the 200+ game veteran coaching the inexperienced umpires.... in a gentlemanly way of course. Coming on off the bench, he asked one ump whether his shot clock was working while a Giant dilly-dallied around. Another time, Will Edwards had seemingly taken a grab in the defensive goal square before it spilled out and the Giants snaffled one. "That was as clean a mark as you'll ever see!"

As a Taylor Adams fan, I was encouraged by his showing. A couple of his "trying-too-hard" moments but pretty tidy in general... one beautiful left-foot around the body snap that he celebrated with exuberance before coming from the field and declaring to the coaches his availability for the ones next week.

Funny sort of game. The boys strung together some really nice passages moving the ball from one end to the other with speed but, against a pretty weak Giants side, probably should have been a more comfortable win.

Thought Cleary was strong in the middle without dominating. Wouldn't have known Corey was playing, or Chamberlain. Hetherton and Kyle unremarkable, although Hetherton looks to have a wingspan of ~4m. Jevan had a couple of moments early and kicked a nice goal. Hannily and Dattoli warmed up together well after the game had started.... thought Hannily was the better of the two when they got on.

Snell looked comfortable and tidy, freed of the No.1 defensive role. Will Edwards... probably not the day for him to shine given the relatively toothless Giants forward line. Podmore-Taylor's talk and organising was impressive and he makes Edwards almost look small.

Bowman running hard laps of the oval. Riak and Billy in civvies. Had a quick chat with Billy... what a guy!

As I said, terrible place to watch footy... add to that interesting conversations with players' family members and all the 50-60 numbers and my assessments could be way off. I did try.

Bloody good effort Nool, thank you for the report.

I had high hopes for Corey this year but he really hasn't put his best foot forward this year. I've been a (cautious) believer but I'm losing faith. Hope he can prove me wrong.

Will be interesting to see who we see fit to replace Gulden and possibly Heeney next week.

Thanks for this match report which takes time to prepare but is great to read.

I noticed that the reserves apparently won by 97 points in the end. Does this mean that the match wasn't called off early after all or do you mean that the reserves only kicked 3.11 early on in the third quarter after kicking a heap of goals earlier in the match?

Do you remember who our major goalkickers were?

And how and where did Liam Hetherton play?

Did any of our non AFL players impress you?

I would have liked to have seen McLean or Ladhams play in the seniors this week as insurance against the strong Brisbane ruck combination but I guess Cox is reluctant to change a team that won so well last week.

Thanks for the kind words.

I have to say I was confused by the published scoreline. Early in the third quarter our score was 3.11 (for the match to that point). After that we kicked straighter and got a number of goals - I don't remember how many but I don't think it was enough to get our score up to 97. At the end of the quarter all the players gathered in the middle of the ground and were shaking hands etc as if it were the end of the match. At that point I left. Now I'm wondering if they did in fact continue and play a 4th quarter, in which case I have no idea what all the handshaking was about.

The only major goalkicker I remember was McLean. Hetherton did ok without impressing especially. My memory is getting hazy now but I think that Hetherton did kick at least one goal (but nothing especially impressive).

The only VFL players I recognised were Kluske and Shipley (who were on our list last season), Harrison (who has been around all pre-season) and Podmore-Taylor (who is huge and stands out). None of them especially caught my eye but all of those three did some ok things.

So, apart from the ABC broadcasting a single match each round, are we going to be able to watch VFL games, either live or after the event?
