Surely they’ll have to trade out high-end talent
Their 2027 1st will probably be in the 30s so it’s almost worthless to Port
It’s also easy to say just trade player/s but they also have to find buyers…and these buyers will know that Dogs need to trade so they have upper hand in negotiations
I can’t see how they do it
Interesting times
They took all their picks to the draft last year rather than trading into the future. At the time people were saying he's definitely off to Dogs - the two things combined don't make sense to me.

I have a feeling and hope he'll re-sign for Port - no one really set up to get him.

Yeah, all options would need to be on the table, given their reported they are obsessed with getting him.
Looking at their OOC players, not sure who they could move on to get some currency. Busslinger?
Unless its someone like Garcia who is still contracted until next year.

Interesting times for them how they manage this.

I don't think those two are worth enough to be particularly relevant. English and Kennedy is what I'd be looking at if I was them.

I did consider Kennedy but his age, I wasn't sure he would be worth much given he is at his 2nd club.

Probably right. He's playing well though. They're not going to get it done with cheapies. Freijah?

Butters will be a Dog sadly.
King likely to sign on with GC.

The Pies have to get someone this year. Throw the cash at Neale and see if it turns his head.
Butters in a Dog's jumper seems out of whack to me. He seems to thrive on the big stage and in front of big crowds. He is a showman with an ego. That club is the antithesis of those things.

Even if we miss Butters, King & Bailey, Neale would still be a huge addition on a 2 year deal with a trigger I reckon.

I would still throw money at, in rough order, any of Darcy Wilson, Riccardi, Brayden Cook (will never happen), or O’Driscoll

I am now hoping we miss King. Just feel the dollars etc will be too big for the output.

Neale would be a great get but probably wishful thinking. He would go a long way to resolving our centre square work.

The others apart from Riccardi.

100% — seriously don’t understand why star free agents arnt lining up to play for the biggest team on the biggest stage at the g in front of 80k most weeks.

I laughed at the thought of Caddy but now I'm all in.
He’s one of my favourites to watch.
If we could somehow make it happen, I would be extremely happy.

Target Toby Greene and Lachie Neale

Maybe the expectation from supporters and media along with the pressure to perform, because if you don't you will be all over the media and discussed about.
At the Pies this is x 10 compared to other clubs....

We set up to defend them. I think it was as effective as we could have hoped for considering they dominated centre bounce hitouts and thus could block out Nick and put it in front of Newcombe against the C grade stoppage mids we had in there.

Do you really think the coaching panel aren't watching and aren't getting the clearance data fed to them in real time? And you've picked up something really simple that would have gotten a better outcome.
I’m sure the smashing at CB Clearance will force a lot of reflection and change is inevitable. Giving up because “we don’t have the cattle”, is not a solution nor Fly’s style.

Anyway good discussion

What you call giving up, I'd call our standard MO. Respect the opposition and set up to protect the defence by making the opposition forward entries scrappier.

They had us beaten in the ruck, with one of the most dangerous stoppage players in the league likely to get first hands on it a lot.

We could have done multiple things to try to win more centre clearances.

Daicos starting further away so he could get around blocks - but it would have us imbalanced - and made it more dangerous when they won the footy.

Starting in front - once again much more dangerous when they won the footy.

Long hunting the footy rather than playing as a negater on Newcombe - once again much more dangerous.

Improving the centre differential wouldn't have been hard, but it likely would have been harmful regarding the differential that actually matters - the scoreboard.

I think about this a lot as well, but honestly there could be a whole host of reasons:

  • Far more pressure playing for Collingwood than arguably any other club?
  • Far more media scrutiny?
  • Is it possible that behind the scenes the environment isn't as great as it seems? (just speculating here)
  • Maybe our development isn't great?
  • Is it possible they hear about our insanely rigid structure and find it a turn off?

I'm just spit balling here as to possible reasons why outside of "We just can't pay them enough or don't have the trade capital"

Robbie Varcoe – remember the name.
Fresh out of the SANFL with Norwood’s under-18s, the teenage talent fired on debut for Mitcham in Eastern’s Division 1 as the Tigers sunk flag rival North Ringwood on Saturday.

Crossing from South Australia and winning a spot on Collingwood’s VFL list this season, Mitcham coach Neil Winterton said the former Mallee Park gun and zippy forward had earned his stripes after a hot start to the season in the under-19s.
He played in our first practice game and got concussed which meant he didn’t play in the last practice game, so we’d only seen a little bit of him,” Winterton said.

“He started the year in the under-19s and kicked seven in his first game, then had 11 or 12 shots the following week but didn’t quite convert.

“He’d been in really good form and impressed on the track so he earned his opportunity on the weekend. He was really lively for us, he kicked one and had one touched, and created pressure with his speed.

“We were really impressed with his first game for us.”

yea, I understand a decent percentage (say 50%) of players are introverts, and may not like the limelight, but for other 50% (those that have confidence, want to showcase themselves on the biggest stage), why arnt they bagging down the door to play for us.

Butters comes accross as super confidence and made for the big stage, suprised we are not in the convo.

The two highest-credentialed players we have ever acquired in my 25+ years of bieng a supporter at Treloar and Houston, who both despite being good, I only consider B+/A- at best, and never really in the top 20 players in the comp.

Just weird, every other sport in the world, the best players want to play on the biggest stages for the biggest teams (Real Madrid, Barcelona, LA Lakers, New England Patriors ect ect).

The Patriots never sign the best players though. Soccer teams without a salary cap can’t really compare, and the LA lifestyle on tens of millions is not quite comparable to being paid less than $1m in Melbourne. Just seems apples and oranges to me.
