I’d be bitterly disappointed if we’re not still pursuing Butters

This years first, next years first and Beau

Add Butters and Neale into that midfield alongside Nick and BANG
Yes that would be a terrific deal for us, but I frankly don't see Port doing it.

The equivalent of that would be to say we'd be happy to lose Nick for two first rounders and someone like a Sam Switkowski. Not gonna happen right?

I don’t think there’s any package that Port will be “happy” to lose Butters for. But if he wants to leave then there’s not much that can be done, and it appears he does.

That package is much more reasonable than the bargain Geelong got Smith for, by way of comparison

We should also be after Toby Greene. Anyone who hates Papley like he does, should be embraced with open arms.

Would be an awesome villain for our forward line. Plus he is still a gun. If we could add Toby & Neale for free (draft capital wise) that would be unreal.

Isn't he only just coming off an ACL? Has he not been one of their best intercept defenders til that ACL?
They’ve preferred Adams this year. As a low cost, trade wise, option to replace Howe and as insurance for Moore I think we could do a lot worse. Doubly so considering how much better he is than our current next in option.

I am smiling. To fit all these incoming must gets it will be necessary to trade Nick soon. I actually thought this year, lack of incoming quality options and good salary cap space were a bad fit.

Cal Ah Chee last year. Smith the year before left for significant unders under threat of the draft. Henry would have left through the draft forcing unders. There’s no scenario where a club trades a player coming off contract for a premium price anymore. It doesn’t happen.

That said go through and find me one example from the past five years where a club got premium value in that scenario and I’ll concede you’re correct.

FWIW Essendon may wind up with him in that scenario, but that’s preferable to us pissing a top 5-10 pick up the wall on him.
So you've come up with Cal AhChee and that's it, we're talking about a 20 yo top 3 pick key forward, the mental gymnastics to think the Suns can be levered into accepting less for a premium talent is truly impressive. We can get him for cheap isn't going to fly and neither is walking him into the draft.

According to Cal Twomey, he's still unsure whether Ben King will re-sign with Gold Coast. He seems to think that if King decides to leave, Hawthorn would be the frontrunner, with Geelong waiting in the wings. No mention of Collingwood
It’s us or GC

I like how you continue to assert he’s a premium talent despite no evidence of such

It would be disastrous picking up Neale. Are we really this stupid? Lightening doesn't strike twice in the same place. Tom Mitchell was the perfect addition to a side competing for the 2023 premiership. Now at least six other teams have moved past us and we're in the rebuild phase. We need a younger gun midfielder just entering free agency. Wardlaw would be an ideal pickup. We need to forget about 34 year olds.
Wardlaw who is slow and averages less than 20 touches a game? Sure he can tackle - but he's a glorified Sam Berry. The old Berry too - Wardlaw hasn't played near the footy that Berry has this year.

Walters would struggle at Hoppers Crossing in his current form. All he has to do is threaten to go to the draft and he'll be lucky to get an early second rounder. If he was contracted you'd get a first round pick for him.

Should we consider Sean Darcy from Freo? Another Darcy in the ruck and we have Darcy Pendlebury for our AFLW side in 2038

Darcy is playing for Peelmantle (Freo's WAFL side) since his injury with Jackson now their main ruck

Would you like to pick up ROB while we're at it? Maybe we can swap DeMattia for Darcy. A spud for a spud

Neale coming to us strikes me as a guy who’s looking to progress his post football life and wants to experience playing for a big club in big games as a footy nuts more than chasing success

Sure everyone wants it, but I’m not sure his motive seems to align from the outside. Speculation of course, I clearly don’t know him
Given the financial situation changes in his life I can understand those thoughts. So is the glass half full, half empty or dry as a roadkill frog on a desert highway ? For financial and big crowd reasons I think he is a better chance to be a Pie. The recruiting process will sort out his motivations and his fitness. His current form is exceptional. I can’t see a very fit and professional player being the equivalent of a dried out frog.
