North have twice vacated their contracts early ahead of a new team coming to the market, so it's not unprecedented.

Otherwise, 2033 isn't a terrible time to start anyway. Gives Tasmania time to settle.

North werent given a choice in the Gold Coast. The AFL canned it.

Will they though?
Again, the Giants are the AFL commission, if the ceo or whomever started arcing up they’d just get replaced. But they wouldn’t because they’d spin it as the Giants doubling down on Western Sydney, ideally with a name change and brand update.

In Norths case, its not even debatable. Once North decided they werent going to move, the AFL decided they werent going to continue on the Gold Coast, the AFL canned it a year or two early - Carlton went up there for a year, the Tigers did as well I think - , including all their camps and other activities.

I'm not even sure why you're bothering Wookie. It's evidently quite clear from googling for two seconds:

Partially (not entirely) due to whispers about NRL putting a team on the GC, the AFL - with zero presence on the GC, plays two pre-season games and two AFL games from 2006 and funds the $1 million requires for minor upgrades to allow Cararra to host AFL gaes:

Around the time that these games are being played in 2006, they do a deal with North.

North sign three year deal for Gold Coast for 10 games over 3 years, play 6 games over 2 years.

Clearly during this time they're doing more research into SEQ, Victorians living in GC, etc, and realise it's viable for a team. They would have understood this eventually but were prodded into action quicker indirectly from the NRL putting a team there.

North play 3 games in 2007, per your links and the GC entry, Carrara redevelopment has been well covered by you.

Not sure why you have to spend your effort arguing with a clear timeline of events as laid out in reporting.

Yes, once the members of N.M. rejected the move.

They rejected a relocation, they didnt reject playing the matches they were already playing there. The AFL canned it immediately after the vote.

Poster above me covers this in more detail.

its not much of an effort, I maintain a timeline of things here for times like this

ACT and Giants have an. agreement in place until 2032 doubt gws will let go of canberra to allow for a team
And will look to renew that contract after that if Barr is still around.
He needs to be removed so Canberra can get its own own team.

Barr is pro a Canberra team. There were several articles quoting him just a few months ago.

He literally called the Giants 'no roadblock'.

yeah Barr isnt going to favour a GWS team over an ACT team. Stadium upgrade costs will be the issue. IF Manuka gets a big upgrade and nothing is spent on GIO Stadium, theres going to be some unhappy campers

Indeed there is and we know that Barr is no friend of the Rugby codes, otheriwse he wouldn't be doing all in his pwoer to stop any upgrades at the GIO stadium.

Yeah it's a political tightrope to walk. I think that's why they're attempting to frame it as an upgrade for cricket, rather than AFL.

Time will tell, but I'm not convinced.
I think he will do anything to stay in power and if that means saying his pro a Canberra team, and still keeping GWS playing games in Canberra he will.

I think all this mustache twirling about Barr and AFL is way over done. Fully replacing Bruce stadium is a much bigger deal than a new grandstand for Manuka, double so if the new grandstand can attract new BBL and then AFL teams. The endless rounds of reports and reviews over the new rectangular stadium is a combination of incompetence, over consultation, and the eye watering cost rather than anything malicious.

All that being said he’s not some secret Giants die hard. If the AFL commission offered a stand alone team he’d go for it every time, as would most Canberra Giants fans.

They rejected a relocation,

N.M. members rejected the relocation/move.
That killed the original intention of promoting N.M. w.r.t. relocation.
Earlier, N.M. played home games in Sydney with the idea of relocation
and when N.M. stated that they were definitely not moving to Sydney
then attendances plummeted.
Let's be perfectly clear it was N.M's actions that ceased these operations
even if the AFL had to technically had to attend to the paperwork.
If N.m. had continued playing in the GC after rejecting relocation
that same catastrophe w.r.t. attendances would have occurred.
At least N.M. have openly said that they are not moving top Perth though they are playing games in W.A.

Upgrade ? it's an oval with a small stand. Nothing compared to a lot of WAFL or SANFL grounds.
GIO Stadium on the other hand has two stands on each wing.
Not sure how you'd upgrade that without a major rebuild.

It did not kill the idea of them continuing to play matches or promoting themselves on the Gold coast. The AFL put paid to that, the reporting is pretty clear on this.

move on please. You yourself reported this as off topic. Dont keep it going for our sake.

In most people's minds it removed any practical benefit of them continuing to play matches or promoting themselves on the Gold Coast except to boost N.M. coffers.
it was a good cost-saving idea for the AFL to can it. They should have done it in Sydney earlier.

It’s got a seated capacity of 13,500. What SANFL or WAFL exclusive stadiums come even close to that?

I was at the last game West Perth played at Leederville and 22,000 attended.
Fremantle oval has a capacity of 17,500
East Fremantle Oval has a capacity of 20,000
Bassendeen Oval has a capacity of 20,000
Joondalup Stadium has a capacity of 16,000
