Dane Rampe

Player Profile

Dane Rampe was denied at several drafts and didn’t land a spot on an AFL list until the age of 22. But ever since being rookie-listed in November 2012, the key defender has seized his opportunity. Rampe made his AFL debut in Round 1, 2013 and played his 150th match in 2019. He’s an All Australian, an emergency for the greatest NSW team of all time and a Bob Skilton medallist, and he’s led the Swans as a co-captain with Josh Kennedy and Luke Parker since 2019. It doesn’t matter if the opposition’s best forward is a tall or small; so versatile and reliable is Rampe that he’s always assigned to the toughest task in defence. Draft history: 2013 Rookie Draft selection (Sydney) No. 37; 2013 AFL draft rookie elevation (Sydney) selection No. 90.

Dane Rampe

DOB: 02 June 1990
DEBUT: 2013
DRAFT: 2013
RECRUITED FROM: Eastern Suburbs (NSW)/University of NSW (NSW)

Surely we see him as insurance policy for seniors, leadership & coaching for VFL players. I'll be annoyed if he's an automatically selection for seniors when our list is fit. Maybe he could shift forward, who knows...might kill it as a 3rd tall type.
I would have loved to have him as a big bodied mid.
He would have been sensational.

I remember him playing CHF for Williamstown back in the day, and he also played forward for the Swans when he was an 18 year old running around as a toppie for the ressies. I think he had a 3 or 4 goal game at one point.

I know Rampe is a much loved Swan, and has had a great career and played some amazing footy over the years, but I'd understand if the club chose not to offer him a new contract. For me, he's depth, and would need to be willing to accept a reduced contract.

I think the club really needs to keep looking forward, and it would be good to keep him on as depth and as insurance if we have a horror run with injury. But I'd be looking at who's going to be in the side in 2-4 years time, and getting games into them.

Same applies to Jake Lloyd.

Both have been part of a team that has gone 0 - 4 in grand finals. And we can debate reasons why that's the ledger. But fact is, they've been core parts of a team that havent been able to get it done at the business end and imo, not essential players at this stage in their careers.

Fox sports says Rampe is still waiting for a new deal.

I thought there was already an agreement that he would get another year?

If he is to get cut in December, I feel that would be the height of disrespect for a great warrior of our team. Likewise Jake Lloyd. Just hope the club has been as transparent as possible with these two, given what they have done for us over many years.

I'd be very surprised if the club hasn't been fully transparent with both Rampe and Lloyd. And I fully expect that the they will be re-signed, and quite possibly already have been notwithstanding whatever the Fox stringer wrote. Alternately, maybe details of the deal are still being worked out. Maybe they're deciding whether to rookie list them, who knows. I also think it's abundantly clear that if they re-sign it will be on much reduced deals and with no guarantees about playing seniors.

Final list lodgement before the draft is at the end of October as all contracts end then, so 12 days away.

We will certainly know the plan by then.

Surely almost certainly one of Lloyd, Rampe get the delist-re-rookie treatment to give us more flexibility/options at the draft.

It seems an outdated stupid rule to me anyway, surely if a player signs a 1 year minimal deal of under $x value, you should be able to just slide them to the rookie list in the offseason without having to do the whole de-list/re-list charade. (If the problem is free agency status, just make the players that get this 'demotion' treatment still fall under the DFA criteria). Too simple right?

This mechanism is only really used to prolong the career of an older player or give a struggling player a lifeline, don't we(the game) want both those things? why make it hard with this whole delisting fallacy. No other clubs ever take these players, so there's basically a gentleman's agreement anyway.

1. Well, actually quite a number of people have complained that the 'rookie' list has turned into a farce since it is now used for experienced players and think it really should be to give fringe players a chance they wouldn't otherwise get, not to relist old players. However, I do agree with you that the rule should be revamped - because it has become a farce.

2. Hugh Greenwood says hello.

The sliding of players to the rookie list was a two year COVID era rule to assist with the cutting of list sizes. The delist and rookie list of senior listed players has always been the rule as it allows players on the fringe of club lists to find new homes if other clubs want them as the rookie draft is the last list management tool for the year before the SSP period.

All players that get delisted automatically become free agents and keep it for the rest of their careers, this is how James Jordan has free agency eligibility despite being traded to us, the Demons delisted him and rookie listed him (under the old COVID rules).

The mechanism is used as a list management tool by the clubs as it saves money on the cap. Players have been taken in the past and this is why the mechanism still exists.

I'm going to sit on the fence with this one. Very comparable CVs: both 1 x AA, both club champions and club captains. Both won one most courageous player in the AFL (Robert Rose) award. Both mature age rookies. Kirk won a flag. Rampe has played longer and more games. Both heart and soul players. There's not much in it.

They're two of my all-time favourite players. I don't want to choose between them.

This is where the taco meme comes in handy. Why not both?

Captain of First flag for 72 years means he wins by a neck. More iconic.
