25 man squads

Just reading a story where it seems that Jonathon Woodgate is unlikely to make Spurs 25 man squad for the start of the season, as such he will be ineligible to play until January at the earliest.

As I understand it, you register 25 players on September 1, 8 of who have to have spent the majority of their time between 17-21 at an English, Scottish or Welsh club.

Outside of that list, you can only play kids under 21 as at December 31, 2010.

I had a look at our squad and have a list of 23 certs for the squad (IMO).

GK - Given, Hart, Taylor
DEF - Kolarov, Bridge, Kompany, Lescott, K.Toure, Onuoha, Boateng, Richards, Zabaleta
MID - Bellend, Johnson, Silva, Ireland, Barry, De Jong, Y.Toure, Vieira, SWP
FOR - Adebayor, Tevez

Our kids that don't have to be on the list are Boyata, Cunningham, Nimely although I doubt any will have a huge involvement this season. No problem with the home grown rule, we make that quite comfortably.

I reckon we'll get in another two forwards, although if one of them is Balotelli he doesn't need to be on the list as he's under 21. So that leaves one space for a forward signing, and one space for a player on the "at risk" list.

Garrido, Johnson, Weiss, Caicedo, Jo, Robinho, Santa Cruz.

Of those I think Garrido, Caicedo, Jo, Robinho and Santa Cruz will go. Weiss will be loaned out again and Johnson will be left off the list, so there might be a bit more transfer business left in us yet. And of course if anyone on the list (Bellend for example) goes he'll have to be replaced either by one of the "at risk" players or by a new signing.

But reading the Woodgate story it seems a bit of a harsh rule. Will be interesting to see how other clubs cope with it.

Would imagine it would be a fairly dire situation to be in knowing you couldn't play in the league regardless of form and fitness. I guess theres always cups and Europe to look forward to.

That's only 24 players and the only players in that squad who can make the quota are Gerrard, Carragher, Johnson and J.Cole. Guys like Kelly, Wilson, Shelvey are all under 21 so dont need to be named but may have to be anyways to make the quota? If I even understand the rules properly. Apparently Luke Young is signing on with us too, no doubt to help with the quota. He's shit.

Coleman is 21, so not sure if he counts. The others are under so you'd add Turner then. Just shows you how thin our squad is, especially in the midfield.

jod - Wilson wouldn't help you with the quota, being Scottish and that. Only FA or Welsh FA registered players count. If he's still at Liverpool when he turns 21 he'd only then qualify as home grown. Sorry but I think you're going to have to list Spearing

Likewise Coleman wouldn't count as home-grown for Everton because he's Irish, but he can get in the U21 list.

The reason Wales is included because Welsh clubs can enter the English football pyramid, Scottish clubs can't.

Can you list young players in the list. Guys like Shelvey, because right now we dont have 8 players. We have Gerrard, Carra, Johnson and J.Cole that would be real first teamers. Outside of that, just to make up the quota we may have to include Shelvey, Spearing, Wilson and Kelly. But my understanding of the rule is that if you are under 21 you can be drafted into the squad without being listed if there is an injury crisis. So say for instance we dont name a player like Amoo or Ecclestone but they are eligible to play for us in the league because they are under 21, despite not being named in the original 25 man squad.

Only that naming Wilson wouldn't count towards your eight players as he doesn't yet qualify as home grown, whereas he doesn't need to be on the list as he can play anyway, being under 21. You seem to be labouring under the impression that Wilson is English... possibly because he played for Rangers

So you can name players under 21 on the list but there isnt much point because players under 21 can play regardless of whether they are on the list or not. I do keep forgetting Wilson is Scottish, not English. So he doesnt qualify, but he is under 21 so wont need to be on the list.

Spearing will no doubt be in the 25 man squad just to make up the numbers. We will struggle to make the required 8 players and may have to name kids just to make it. Apparently Luke Young is on his way though, I dont rate him but it's another English body.
