The poor guy had serious food poisoning so only played a half in the second game.

The ruck planning and the intro is a short term problem for him I guess

I’m hoping he plays like everyone else!!
Definitely rate him, like most, but he’s got plenty of time to learn his craft in the vfl ala Larkey.

I’d be a bit surprised if he’s in consideration for Rd1. Missed both senior practice matches, didn’t exactly tear it up in the VFL last week, plus we have Larkey and CCJ to play forward and Goldstein/Xerri to share ruck.

I was gung-ho on him last year, but we’d probably be doing him a better service by giving him a block of VFL games.

Yeah I think you’re right about him having to to play in the 2’s. No real rush.

Frustrating that after having no forwards to support Larkey last year we have CCJ, Xerri pushing for 2nd ruck and now Comben seems extra to some extent

There’s plenty of room for Larkey, Comben, CCJ and Xerri in the 22 long term. Plus they’ll have Edwards up their clacker soon enough.

Yes well that would be Edwards, McKay, Xerri, Larkey, CCJ, Comben aka chomps, chompo, chommie, chimp, champ chom. Should we venture down land of the giants way again. Probably going to need everyone else to be fleet of feet, which is similar to being fleet of foot. But both are quick when using feet.

realise CCJ has only played 8 or so games but I've seen nothing that screams at me he's going to have a long career. Someone if they all play will need to take the CHB position.

Also Comben is possibly the only one of that lot that could push towards averaging 15 plus disposals a game. As I have already mentioned a big issue for mine is the lack of ball we get. So many sub 10/12 disposal players already.

I will be tracking our list of under 12 disposal players in 2022. On last seasons count we have around 15 less than 12 disposal players on our list.

We need accumulators.

McKay down back with Corr.

I don't think we could go in with Larkey, Comben, Xerri, CCJ and Edwards. One would miss. Larkey, El Chom, with 2 of Edwards, Xerri and CCJ ruck forward bench. Edwards and Chomo are quite mobile. Xerri and CJ are more your head kicking type.

Surround them with those fleet of foot types and we should be more than fine.

I'm not too fussed if the big guys get under 15 possessions a game. They can have impact without accumulating the pill.

Its mildly frustrating but in terms of long term thinking its great. R1 doesn't matter but that depth over the next few seasons will.

Time is on his side.

Yes and I understand that, although during the halcyon days of the 90's we had the likes of Carey, McKernan, even Fridge Roberts all getting plenty of the ball. Also they gave us a contested mark advantage. I personally believe those guys around 200cm need to be able to clunk them otherwise you're going backwards. A fairly basic pov I know , but the game is fairly simple when push comes to shove. Micky Martyn didn't get much of the pill, but he did punch plenty of opponents in the back of the head which I believe is a stat in itself. So I am happy as Micky P stated for us to have a couple of head kickers in the side. Let's not forget we are the worst side in the league and that normally means plenty won't have long careers.

For mine our biggest losses have been Waite and Daw who both controlled the air, yes Maj didn't do it for long unfortunately but heck it was a thing of beauty to watch while it lasted.

So it will be fascinating to watch us develop over the coming seasons.

Comben is a bit like Waite and Daw. He is athletic and can jump and hold contested marks.

The half a season Maj looked at home he avaeraged 15 possessions from the backline and kicked 9 goals in 3 games up forward. W80 averaged 12-15 across his career and had some years up around 20.

Gawn has averaged 15-19 possessions a game for about 4 years.

Goldy has averaged around 15 for seven years and 12 -15 for four years before that.

Nankervis averaged around 15 disposals or more in the years Richmond won their flags. (12 in 2020 but the games were 20% shorter.)

Buddy averaged 15-20 for a decade.

The best of those players (and Maj) all averaged over 1 contested mark per game while they were dominant.

None of them dominated like Duck etc, or the bigger players back in the day but the game has changed since then and defensive set ups are alot more sophisticated.

If we can get around 15 touches and a couple of contested marks a game out of Larkey, Chom and Edwards and hard contesting of the footy in the air from X and CCJ over the next five years it will certainly benefit the side. We should be hoping for that sort of output.

I’m hoping we’ve added Oscar Goldman to the medical team so we can ensure that ol’ Chompo gets on the field and do Waite type things.

It’d be nice to have a 23 yo Majak running around the backline intercepting everything and working in with the human bomb diffuser.

Anyway, you’re right, it’s going to be an interesting couple of seasons watching this unfold.

I agree Comben is the most likely and is very much in the mold of those you mentioned. Of course Charlie has had a history of injuries and tbh I'd suggest if he was injury free he'd have gone very early in the draft in any given year.
We've taken a huge punt and one I agree was worth taking.

And again I agree the figures you put up we MUST aspire towards those.

Get this man an 'inner-scrotum' badge pronto mods!!!!

I reckon in 2 seasons we will forget that Chominski was in battle for any position other than the All-Australian one. #goodvibes

I am really bullish on Edwards. Kicks both feet. Natural mover. Good kicking action and good hands. I would be fast tracking him as quickly as practicable.

He’s certainly an impressive mover. I would think a year in the VFL beckons with maybe an encouragement award game thrown in.

Agree, only frustrating to me personally as i'm a big fan of his but big picture its awesome.

CCJ is not the answer as a second KPF.

Like Xerri isn’t and Campbell wasn’t before him.

Comben actually plays as a forward and should be played there at every available opportunity.
100%.

We’ve made the mistake of having a 2nd ruck playing as a key position player far too many times in the past.

I’m of the opinion that there is only one spot for CCJ or Xerri, with Comben playing CHF.

Daniel Currie screamed "What about Me?" into his hairbrush mic when he read this.

CCJ has a lot better forward craft than both Xerri and Campbell. He played some decent footy up forward for Richmond when given the opportunity. He has more agility and seems to have better running patterns. I’m not sold that he will succeed up forward, but he has a lot better chance than the other two.

This is a strange conclusion on the available evidence. He's played a handful of games at AFL level as a KPF and looked good while also playing really well at twos level in the same position. Also only 22 and from the same draft as LDU, Stepho, etc. Not to mention Big Men Take Time.
