Player Watch #32 - Corey Ellis

Sorry RT,But he's not exactly going to avoid to tackle if he has no choice is he.
If he isn't avoiding tackles then that must mean that he is involved in the play, which is something that some have suggested he doesn't do enough of. As TI put forward, he was involved in at least half a dozen tackling situations (2 made tackles and 4 broken tackles) on Wednesday night and overall he was credited with 5 tackles in the stats. By my count that is at minimum 9 tackling situations. Similar to the first game against Essendon, the difference was that he got on the end of some possessions when being involved in the play and ended with 20 disposals and 6 tackles. For a kid labelled as timid weak and skinny, it's a step in the right direction to see him involved in that much of the play. What he needs now is to consistently produce games where he is getting his 15-20 touches and 4-6 tackles a week. He does that and we have another solid midfield/flanker to add to the mix that we can continue to develop so that by time he is in his mid 20's he is a player that we all want him to be.

He has talent but needs to develop the physique to impact the game physically. I don't think we can develop him as an outside player while we wait unfortunately as there are better outside options than Corey. It's inside/out mid or bust.

Gets at least another year on the list.

Where I see Corey Ellis.

I see Corey Ellis as being a best 22 player should he get himself right. Never once have I claimed him to be a walk up start, the kid obviously needed time to develop from when he was drafted as a 74kg skinny inside midfielder who had foot issues. The foot issues were addressed in his first season where he had bone fragments removed from both feet that were causing problems, along the way he also had some other injuries that put the brakes on his development. Then he had some personal issues outside of footy that knocked him around a bit as well. Slowly but surely the kid has developed his game and body. While he isn't a Graham/Cotchin/Martin type of physique he has still put on 6kg of weight and has also gotten stronger.

In his first 2 years Ellis averaged about 2-3 tackles a game both at VFL and AFL level, which came from not having the strength to make his tackles stick. As his body developed and he gained strength he has increased his tackle numbers to 6 per game at VFL level, but they were still around the 2-3 tackles at AFL level last year, IMO that had more to do with where he played rather than not wanting to tackle, not many HBF average more than 2-3 tackles per game, while in the VFL he spends a bit of time rotating through the middle. He has also increased his disposals last year averaging around 20 disposals. Not massive numbers by any stretch but getting 20 disposals and 6 tackles a week is a step in the right direction for a kid that we want to develop into an inside midfielder.

The pleasing thing in the JLT games is that Ellis has brought that tackling endeavour to these games. Averaging about 5.5 tackles to go with 16 disposals a game average. Again it's not the 25-30 disposals that prime movers like Cotchin Martin Grigg Lambert Caddy Prestia are capable of getting, but as a rotational midfielder it is a step in the right direction for a 21 year old developing midfielder with 23 games under his belt. As I've said repeatedly over the last couple of days, ideally we'd see Ellis getting his 15-25 touches and laying 4-6 tackles a week. That would make him a handy player to join the likes of Graham Higgins Menadue Markov & Naish as the next midfield group coming through.

The ball is now in Ellis' court though, in the final year of his contract he needs to get it right or he could find himself out the door. Personally I'm confident the kid will make it and it would appear that the club believes he will too as he looks to be in the mix for the 22 to start the season.

another weird game from corey ellis 12 disposals @66%de with 2 clangers everyone talks up his elite skills but thats hardly elite but then on the positive side he had 4 tackles and 5 1%ers which was one less then rance

corey really is an enigma i just don't think we can carry him

I was impressed by him tonight. Looked to tackle and had repeat efforts in him. Didn’t seem to have that over the last few years but he’s getting there. I was concerned last year, looked like he was going backwards but definitely taken a step forward this year

I expected more from Corey tonight, Dont believe he made the most of his opportunity against a team with a midfield that is also young

Needs to get a wriggle on if he wants a career at this level
True...and by the way Bolton did not kick 4 goals...

Yes. And next week, assuming he gets another crack, will be alot tougher. Mind you, Lambert was shite (but has runs), and Bolton was quieter than Ellis. Think we give him a few weeks to try to build something.

Hes one that needs to play a few games in a row to get into it.

His defensive side of his game was where you’d want it to be, but offensively struggled. Started on ball for the first half. Was moved down to half back in the second half. I’m not the biggest fan of him playing that role though.

If he gets dropped for one of Houli or Prestia, I’d understand it but I think he will be better for the run.

I don’t see them going with him against the Crows which is a shame but at the end of the day, it’s up to him to make himself undroppable, he didn’t do that today.

still don't see how he fits in the side

backline players all ahead of corey
houli
broad
short
brandon ellis
vlas

midfield all ahead of corey
dusty
cotch
lambert
prestia
caddy
grigg
jack graham
kmac

id also argue that miles/lloyd should be ahead of him as well

Agree with this. Didn't have an impact with the ball but impacted off the ball. I believe he'll get a couple more games until Prestia comes back to show he can cut it.

Wasn't on his on in regards to struggling to have an impact either. I'd play him against Adelaide and see how he goes in a genuine high pressure game that will be of finals like intensity.

I would rather put games into Higgins than CEllis. People carrying on about his tackling are clueless as he’s constantly in need of this discipline bc he can’t win a hard ball and is slow/second to the ball. Tackling is not a skill set , it’s a standard discipline that every player must have to buy into our game plan. It’s what natural ability or skills they can bring to the team that’s important to us.
Conca and CELlis are liabilities and are being gifted games . Our side always looks iffy when these two blokes play and they’ve both been in the system long enough to clean up their shit, but they continue to display their same traits. Seriously we need to start looking at developing others as I mentioned pages back there are at least ten blokes before these guys.
Still haven’t seen why CEllis was named Silk as he’s closer to Rayon.
Even Carlton’s youngsters were well passed him. Meh.

Will be an absolute liability against the Crows. Hopefully both he and Conca are dropped for Prestia and Houli.
What have you got against Conca. He just got better as the game went and provided really good run once he played through the midfield. Plus he is a great tackler. We have never seen what he can do due to injuries but has serious upside if he gets a run at it, especially through the midfield.

Ellis looks like he doesn't believe that he belongs. He has no expression in the way he moves and plays and it looks like he believes he is just making up the numbers before he gets dropped. And that is probably how it will go. The game is so fast and he ain't, and I think he knows it.
Conca on the other hand had a very good last half. He has speed and lateral movement and plays it tough and just needs to play through the midfield where he belongs. Thought he showed some really positive signs last night. The guy hasn't played proper footy for years (injuries).

I think Conca is a terrible decision maker and this is what kills him at the top level. Stuck in two minds and more often than not ***** it up. I’ve lost count of the number of years he’s been in the system , but when I look at our list and see Markov Menadue Higgins Short Lloyd Miles I know they’re all better than him. Carlton were spent in the last and Conca basically got a free ride as it was one way traffic. Can’t wait until he’s permanently replaced back to VFL after our four outs come back. I still think he’s lucky to be getting a game b4 the other kids I mentioned.

I can see that up to a point and I think that has a lot to do with his lack of continuity. We all sweat on his average disposal almost waiting for a mistake (there were plenty of other very good players making mistakes early, how was Edwards handball in the first Q or 2, Rance's panic handball et etc). Did you see Conca's lace out pass in the last under pressure, great vision. It takes time to come from JLT to not having played a game since R.6 last year to the pace of that game last night.) His last Q was as good as I've seen from him in years.

Of course A graders or better players make clangers. If you don’t understand why they make mistakes and neglect all the other positive things they bring to the team then your argument is soiled. Conca is a fringe player so he needs to clean his act up and introduce more positives , just like Castagna Butler Broad and Graham did in 2017.

Seriously ... permanent bans for anyone who has or in te future associates the word 'silk' with Corey Ellis.
Not up to senior level and proved it again last night.
Out of place at elite level and zero confidence, which won't come dishing up ordinary efforts like last night. Really needs t be back laying twos and dominating games.
People won't like it, but his disposal is generally rushed and haphazard.

I don’t rate him. Not sure what the go with Menadue and Markov is but I would much rather see them get games. I feel they have a lot more upside, Menadue especially.

Conca’s disposal is a real worry.
