Player Watch #32 - Corey Ellis

I would like to see Miles get another go in preference to CEllis. Has stripped down the weight and improved his running. Already has the inside game CEllis is trying to develop and you know he will give you everything he has. I'm not sure how they compare in terms of defensive work. This was a weakness in the past. I'm happy to see CEllis get another couple of weeks but its not going to get any easier for here with Adelaide, Hawks and Melbourne. Really missing Prestia imo.

Seriously ... permanent bans for anyone who has or in te future associates the word 'silk' with Corey Ellis.
Not up to senior level and proved it again last night.
Out of place at elite level and zero confidence, which won't come dishing up ordinary efforts like last night. Really needs t be back laying twos and dominating games.
People won't like it, but his disposal is generally rushed and haphazard.

I thought he was okay, but noticed on more than one occasion a clear lack of confidence. His disposal was rushed when he didn’t have time and space, unlike say Butler who is just poised.

It’s now a catch-22 with CEllis IMO. You can drop him and increase the likelihood that his confidence will drop lower, and that the pace of the game at VFL level being genuinely slower, make it more likely that he will never be able to fully adapt. Or, take in not necessarily bad performances, but performances you’d likely see bettered by others on the list not in the Senior’s currently.

I don’t know the actual answer, other than what ever is best for the team long term is the correct path.

I’m still waiting to see his elite kicking ability, at this stage it’s beginning to look like a myth.

That's the thing. I have different expectations of different players fair to say, like most of us, I expect a lot from blokes like Rance, Riewoldt and Martin and they actually deliver more often than not. I too am a big fan of Grimes and Houli and have lofty expectations and they too deliver. My expectations of a guy like Butler are developing solidly. Corey Ellis, I have few expectations, but yet was disappointed last night without expecting much at all.
I am awaiting evidence of these elite kicking skills too.

CEllis was involved in a lot of the play, which is a huge step forward. But he did an OKish job overall. Nothing really good, nothing really bad. A couple of his kicks were bullets to leading players, that were cut off. Either that is vision, or good defensive work by Carlton's defenders (or both). He looked to be a little slow in mind at times. But he also got into packs etc and helped out teammates.

Not a game to drop him on. But neither a game that will force him into true best 22. Ammunition for the lovers and haters. Me, I saw enough to know why they like him, and enough to know why he causes aggravation.

Probably not but the availability of Houli & Prestia will have a bigger bearing on whether he stays in or not.
Had a poor first half but I thought he did some good things in the third, a couple of repeat efforts and nice kicks.

I feel like I harp on about Corey Ellis but he was just okay last night. Their was a lot of talk pre-season that the club were very excited with his progression. For me him and Conca have been our worst pick-ups early in the draft. It’s not his speed that irks me – it’s that he seems timid with the footy and unsure of himself. There’s something about his step that doesn’t sit right with me. It’s not that he takes a backward step but I almost feel like he stuttering with the footy when he gets it. He’s not as clean as people think and doesn’t find nowhere near enough of the footy. If as an outside mid you aren’t damaging with 15+ a game then it’s next up for me.

All very fair mate.
CEllis has his supporters - and they'll inevitably point to one piece of play or one stat - which in effect weakens their argument as you need to have more than one trait and be good at several facets of the game. As a package the whole is lacking. He should be made to dominate VFL games before getting another crack.

Slow and doesn't get much of the ball.

Not a good combination. You at least need one or the other.

Better extract the digit as there are a number of players in the seconds who are knocking on the door.

In other words plain. He's two scoops of vanilla!

I would rather put games into Higgins than CEllis. People carrying on about his tackling are clueless as he’s constantly in need of this discipline bc he can’t win a hard ball and is slow/second to the ball. Tackling is not a skill set , it’s a standard discipline that every player must have to buy into our game plan. It’s what natural ability or skills they can bring to the team that’s important to us.
Conca and CELlis are liabilities and are being gifted games . Our side always looks iffy when these two blokes play and they’ve both been in the system long enough to clean up their shit, but they continue to display their same traits. Seriously we need to start looking at developing others as I mentioned pages back there are at least ten blokes before these guys.
Still haven’t seen why CEllis was named Silk as he’s closer to Rayon.
Even Carlton’s youngsters were well passed him. Meh.

If that’s the case, why does Short get away with one tackle for the game?

AS I said tackling is not a skill set,but a discipline. It's been mentioned on the game day thread perceived pressure is equally more important with skills.
Butler George and Short all offer this whereas Corey is just running around chasing opponents and tackling with the silk essential missing.
Can't even compare Short's game to CEllis as they were Miles apart.
Also Short is a brilliant user of the ball so he plays the go to man out of the BL like a mini Houli.

I reckon he is in for Prestia. And that, right now, a Camry for a Lamborghini.

Anyway, he gets to have a shot at AFL. He proved (to me anyway, that he can do the physical AFL stuff, has some nice moves. But is a long way off genuinely adding to the team.

Hope Prestia is fit and plays. Not that I am against CEllis. But I see A grade in Prestia, and decent B grade potential in Corey. And Prestia is what he does now, not what he is potentially capable of at some point when he gains confidence and physical maturity.

I don't get what the club see in this kid
It looked to my untrained eye a typical CEllis game. Better when he was on the ball but seemed to be swapped with Conca late, and it is hard to impress off half back. We play Crows and Hawks next. The Crows will be hard to beat at home. I have a sneaky feeling Prestia might miss a couple. And the coaches like Conca and CEllis & I reckon they might be given the next 2 games.

Who really cares??? Martin laid one tackle, Riewoldt one, Bolton none, Graham 15.
As long as the team tackle count is high, I'm happy.
As I said earlier, players come as a package which several different traits.
Too many on this forum want to talk up, or talk down an individual player on just one stat. It's nonsense.
I couldn't care if CEllis laid 11 tackles last night, so many other parts of his game were lacking.
Short laid one tackle, did he? Would have thought he offered a lot more in run and carry and spoils.
We have one poster who continually talk up CEllis' tackle count and compares it to player X and Y, yet runs the other way when it's mentioned Miles lays more tackles per game throughout his career, on average, than both Martin and Cotchin. Means squat!
I reckon CEllis would lay a few few tackles as he is out of position so damn often.

Personally i was disappointed with what Corey Ellis did last night , I was expecting more involvement and more damaging disposal from him
We were playing against a pretty young midfield and he had a chance to have a bigger influence in the game

If we had lost last night there would have been Corey's blood on this forum and the positive comments would have not made its way into this thread, Not sure what to do with him at the moment but we cant carry him in games that are 50/50 - We need more output from him

qucikly running out of patience , Needs to be harder at the ball and the man and more involvement

Can’t really argue with much of that. I’ve already said that Ellis’ game wasn’t up to standard. I just felt that posters were pumping Short up, even when he appeared to fail to meet the bare minimum requirements for this team, which is defensive pressure. Granted I don’t know how many pressure points or 1%’s he had, but based on his past it wouldn’t be much.
You may not bring it up, but if Ellis only had one tackle for the night, it would undoubtedly be brought up as another reason he should be dropped by many others.
Bit of consistency wouldn’t go astray.

And yet CEllis had more pressure acts then the three players named in less game time.

Yes, but read all of my post as he plays a different role.
Personally CEllis is an average tackler and who really cares if he brings nothing else to the table.
