Player Watch #32 - Corey Ellis

So now he doesn't have to just lay more tackles, they need to be bone jarring game changing tackles for them to be any good.

So to recap, Ellis must have 12-18 damaging possessions and lay 4-6 bone jarring game changing tackles just to be rated as adequate.
Sounds fair to me...

So let me get this right, Ellis puts in 4 efforts in one passage of play and then sags off to cover Grimes man as Grimes follows the ball he kicked off the ground and Ellis is still at fault.

Is that correct?
Just like your last innings.Thats all what people remember.

Just realised... how good are we travelling? How bloody good are we travelling?
No reason to diss the coach, the admin, the board, the depth or the playing list in general.
A 21 year old that is yet to live up to his draft position, his talent or the expectations is all we've got to argue about!
Happy days are here again. :)

No because he goes and covers the outlet pass to Silvaghni when he sees Grimes go past him.
He wouldn't had to cover the outlet pass if he put himself between the ball and Grimes in the first place. The ball actually could be going into our fwd line.

Corey seems like a nice kid and I really hope he makes it. Personally I'm not sure he will. One of things I like to see in developing young players is them improve on the areas they might not be naturally good at. He seems to have good disposal at times, but nothing like the 'silk' that was spoken about. He's not quick and seems to lack intensity at times. Might not necessarily be his fault, there's many players out there and over the years the same where they just don't quite have that intense competitive instinct and it's not uncommon in players who through their junior years have been able to get by on sheer skill and ability at that level alone (I have no idea if this is representative of him at junior level, but it's not uncommon), but when it comes game day and live or die on the field, they can't quite get to the level required.

One area I always look at from a development point is, have the club given the player enough blocks of games in a row to get accustomed to the pace & intensity of the game ? Corey can't complain in this regard, out of his 23 games to the end of last year he was given blocks of 4, 8, 3 (only one game between the 8 and 3 missed), 2 & 4. He hasn't been in one week out the next.

I have a rule of throwing out the form book for round 1, just want the 4 points and no injuries and I'm happy to see him get a few more games while we have injuries, but unless he starts to show that he deserves to be in the 22, then I think it's back to the VFL and completely dominate there before he gets another chance

He was never getting the ball. He was nowhere near it, the Carlton player was always getting it first.

I don't see you having a go at Edwards or Caddy who were in the play too trotting behind and peeling off into D50

For everyone else playing at home here is the whole play

Usain Bolt would have struggled to get between Grimes and the ball from where Ellis was when the ball fell at the feet of Grimes.

Thanks. Yeah.. nothing he could have done (except had Rioli type speed to make the Cripps tackle). Pushed hard to make numbers and the peel off is the logical position to take.

Truth be told the ball should never have got down there from all our broken tackles in the square..
But somehow it's all Corey's fault!

This is my problem with the whole criticism of CEllis (He does deserve some, he needs to get more of the ball and be more involved), people say they see something poor and someone else says it proves CEllis is not working hard enough/timid/whatever (its not just him happened a lot to Shedwards with disposal and not getting enough and Houli and being soft) when in fact the play is mis remembered but is used to perpetuate the stereotype.

Kruezer threw the ball, but i don't have much of a problem with that as it was probably knocked free as much as threw. The biggest criticism of Corey in that play was he was too long on the ground after the first tackle which gave Cripps the 2-3m of free space he needed, but his teammates need to cover him a but there too.

This and have been taken out of context with quantity over quality .
I look at the full package in a footballer not just two highlights. Cellis game was underwhelming more bc what he failed to do rather than the two things you’re salivating over. As I’ve said it’s not all about possessions, but what he brings to the game in terms of quality that has hurt factor. Atm he’s hurting us more by playing bc he’s underdeveloped. I’m not writing him off , but I think it’s doing more damage to his confidence by playing him raw.

No one is salivating over anything

Every single person has admitted he has areas he needs to improve on, but my point is that no one has the amount of dangerous possessions in 1 game that you'e expecting Corey too.

Then Goldust says he would want to see at least 1 or 2.

2 examples are provided but neither have been accepted.

We all accept he has things to work on and is still a way off it, but it would be good if his knockers could also acknowledge that he did have some good, impactful possessions.

Remembering that no one is ever going to have 15 -20 dangerous possessions.

I'm happy to just agree to disagree on this.

Think a few of you are wrongly saying / thinking we all think the sun shines out of Corey's ass, no one thinks that.

Bloody hell! He's done the right thing by covering Silvagni!!
He's running towards Grimes, of course Grimes is going to run past him.
