Max gawn was just as bad in his first 5 years or so, believe it or not
Gawn was viewed as a horrifically poor footballer for a very long time. Xerri was seen as a stop gap battler.

Ryan is a confident player at VFL, is one of the better VFL rucks in general. Then goes to AFL and every bad habit he has seems to pop up.

Some of his taps were great and clearance wise we did better for him being in there. Unfortunately let himself down greatly a couple of times and he'll know that.

Playing AFL for the first time in a year off half a VFL game, I'm not shocked he gave away frees that often were fatigue or strength based.

It's an indictment on our club on 3 fronts

1) He hasn't developed at all over 6 years
2) He STILL hasn't been coached to not drop his head, and to give a single second effort
3) We signed him on for 3 extra years, 1 year ago

Blair and Co had a lot of credits from our premiership years, but that shit is running dry real fast.

Ryan, Hopper, Gibcus deals are looking awful.
couldn’t agree more. What the club sees in Ryan I just don’t know. And 6 years in…. It’s a horrific list decision. Coupled with the fact our No1 ruck is bash and crash on last legs and they already have OHB who’ll never make it to the level. Such poor list management

As bad as he was yesterday it was unforgivable that he’s gone and gotten himself suspended for such a stupid act.

Not only was it selfish, it’s affected the way the team may have to structure up next week without a ruckman.

Personally I’d bring OHB in and leave Samson in the reserves for a couple of games.

OHB is certainly not up to it right now, but that sort of crap from Samson should be punished.

Never know until we give him a go. Some players improve when they take the step up. At the very least, he'd be more competitive. Lockwood was 10x as competitive in his 2nd and 3rd efforts in the VFL compared to what Ryan dishes up, and he's giving up about 20kgs.

IMO, Ryan is just not up to it. There are fundamentals in his game that he is still getting wrong after 5 years in the system. Dropping his head, no strength in the contests, no second efforts, lack of endurance to keep up with Oppo rucks and Muppet hands overhead in contests. Sadly, when he does take a mark (even uncontested), we all make that same noise as one of those Taliban dudes when they miraculously hit a US army truck with one of their dodgy RPG's! Uuaahhhh!!

Let's look at McAndrew from the Crows as a perfect comparison for how Ryan should be impacting games after 5 years... Both drafted in the same year, both 25 years old. Ryan 26 games at AFL level, McAndrew, only 5 with 3 of them this year!!! This round, McAndrew - 31 hitouts, 13 tackles against both Darcy and Jackson, Ryan - 21 hitouts and ZERO tackles against Sweet! Only concession I can give is that it was Ryan's first game back from Injury, but I just can't see him ever becoming a decent hard working Ruckman for us at AFL level.

The hard-working bit is the issue for me. Can handle someone not being as good as their opponet on pure talent but not on workrate. He has always looked knackered 5 mins into his games. The goal Sweet kicked was the clincher as much as that stupid punch.

Positives
Thought he ran out the game well, that’s good coming back from a foot injury.
Can see potentially a few i50’s from his tap work at CB

I’m not going to list every negative I can think of but what has to change right now is in his last two games
6 kicks, 7 Free’s against.
I reckon he’s in the last chance saloon after that report.
I laugh at all the negative comments in here. I bet they didn’t even go to the game. He took a good mark in the first I think. If he builds on that he’ll be good. Just needs to keep bulking up too

CCJ is copping a similar hard time over at North, but at least when he was out there on Friday he looked like he wanted to play well & committed. Ryan is a shitshow.

Its Kosi all over again - just riding pointless years on him knowing he is never going to make it. Just cut him at seasons end - or, do it now & make a statement & use his spot in the mid-season draft to recruit someone who wants to at least try & take their chance
You can not make a list spot by sacking a contracted player. He’d have to agree to retire. You can sack him but the spot does not become free.

from the outside it looks like rather than using the extended contract to say 'alright ive got this long to get my game and body to afl level and be playing consistent seniors' he said to himself 'i've got a guaranteed 6 figure paypack for the next few years and i dont have to do shit'. case in point his body, he should be a hulking behemoth by now but tom burton would move him off the ball. you cant tell me theres a professional mindset there.

Throw in Mykelti and we have the quaddie...
I reckon given we would have got like Robey as a compensation pick for Balta and then enough salary cap space to make Butters a godfather offer, that has to be up there. Colina's last extension was also insane (0% chance of making it, and one reason we have a dearth of rucks now) but I think he was only a cat-b so I guess it doesn't entirely count.

Please tell me if he contests it and loses it blows out to a 3 week suspension? Would be nice............ there's a reason Brisbane didn't want him and he was in their academy available for selection 2 drafts in a row. Gutless wonder has zero core strength. Gets monstered by any opponent regardless of size. 6 years is enough, cant stomach him going around for a 7th. Pay him out and piss him off eoy.

There you go, I did not know that. In typical AFL style, seems perplexing. I don't understand that if you pay the player out completely, why his list spot would not become available. I bet you if Geelong did it though......rule change.

That's not right. It does free up a list spot but you obviously have to pay them out and the wage still falls under the salary cap the following year.

Plenty of clubs have delisted contracted players to rookie them and free up a primary list spot.

Let's do it then, for Lefau too, I've seen enough, both did unprofessional acts this year and neither showing anything much at the top level. No hard feelings, they'll eventually look back and treasure the time they got on an AFL list.

Take a couple of guys on minimum in the MSD, 6 month contracts.

e.g. Toner, El Nour

Then we will see what real hunger to succeed looks like.

Sorry I might not have been clear or I misunderstood. I may have the originally poster on ignore and missed some context....

The list spot doesn't become free until after list lodgement ie end of the year.

Mansells injury might put him out for the season. If we're bottom 2 come MSD time, which we will be, it'll be a real shit sandwich if we don't have a list spot free. Especially if we miss out on the first pick.

I’d actually support the club sacking this bloke to make room for a MSD pic. Between him and lefau they sit comfortably amongst worst Richmond players I’ve seen in 50 years

Make a statement and do it
Lefau at least tries hard. You know that after every match, Lefau has given it all he has as he does the things like chase and tackle.

I think with Ryan he is a big man with little actual aggression. He needs get mean and angry and build his core strength. I mean seriously it is all I would do with him for the rest of the year and preseason. Squats and core exercises that build balance. That way he can learn to not be pushed away so easily.

I would then also start telling him that he needs to be smarter in his aggression. Open handed palm strikes in around the ground ruck contests can be defended with "Well he is hard to move so I have to put all my effort into it".

In all this rambling, he needs presence on the field. Not this meek shit.
