Another showing of a player that plays extremely well in the twos but when he gets his chance in the 1s he doesn't play in his proper role.

Seems like its becoming a pattern at the club that we immensely struggle to "time" debuts and end up just waiting for a bad before in the 2s before saying a player isn't ready. If we do give them a game its not going to be in their natural position

Man zero development is happening since the NEAFL days.

Hope the VFL coaching revamp will help this season.

Disagree mostly on this but can see your point. I think the development is coming in the VFL, it’s just the AFL is too scared to debut these guys and instead plays the old guard time in time out.

And if the newbies get a game they sure as hell aren’t playing their preferred position.

It's hard when you're constantly contending. If we were struggling in the bottom 6 it's because we're multiple A graders short and all of a sudden your 21 yr olds are guaranteed a game because there's no one else.

I understand that but there becomes a tipping point and it seems like we are struggling to find that balance. There is a lack of trust for the up and comers and first couple guys off the ranks in case of injury to actually have a meaningful impact on games.

I hope I'm wrong about him, but I just can't see what AFL traits he has. He brings pressure usually but that won't do it alone. 3rd year and 18 games, you'd think you'd have gotten some glimpses or moments of more. Get that he's not used the best, but most don't play mids from day 1 so you gotta find a way to show something. Hopefully he's just a slow burn, like some are, but my gut feel since last year is he'll be a trier that plays 30 odd games.

I think some of the other youngsters might shoot past him, and if they don't we might be in a bit of trouble.
Like I said hope I'm wrong about him but he almost certainly gets dropped next game and if he doesn't take the next opportunity after that (which I'm sure he will get), then when? Unless you can forge a career as an almost professional 'depth player' type, there's probably only so many times you can go in and out until someone else starts getting a go.

I think he has the raw attributes to be a solid contributor at senior level but he's not quite there yet.

I suspect the hardest thing for an inexperienced player is to adjust to how much time you've got. Corey generally needs to take a split second longer; Cleary a split second less. Whether it clicks for them remains to be seen. For many youngsters it doesn't. And the very best seem to grasp it the moment they step onto the field for their debut (ala Errol).

If we treat our draft class like we’ve treated Cleary we actually might be cooked. Errol and Heeney both out so Cleary finally gets a chance and…. Benched the whole first quarter and often benched when sheldrick is also off…. He has had games where he has shown he has skills but being put as an on baller in the vfl just to get stuck forward offers no development or experience.

Kieran Jack got chucked straight on Gary Ablett but got smashed but he learnt from that game. What we’re doing now is poor. If ya gonna play a young player for less than 50% of the game may as well have used Kyle so HE can learn the game speed if anything. Really disappointing but hey, was in the middle like 2 times right?

He had one CBA so not two times my bad. 13 pressure acts and 4 tackles in his 49% TOG is actually a bit encouraging while being left forward for a majority of that time and was unlucky a couple of times for taking the duckers high a few times.

I preface this post by saying I haven't seen last nights game:

Cleary is not a small forward. He is an in and under clearance on baller, who certainly in juniors, was one of the best in his year. He was the guy who extracted the ball so that mckercher, Saunders and rogers could shine, in particular Rogers who he formed a lethal one - two punch. If the club does not view him in this way then he will be a de-list as he is not a small forward.

I felt Cleary's performance was limited by the instructions he was given by the coaches. I have the distinct impression they said the exact opposite of "just go out there and do your thing" - I think he was told to play a very specific role and that led to him second guessing himself and looking to follow orders rather than just play what was in front of him. This is just a guess but it was what I thought when seeing him, with the ball in hand especially.

I don’t think the 23rd player selected generally gets the luxury of going out there to just “do their thing”. Maybe on debut they might, but not into their third year.

This is why a fair number of young players look like a future Brownlow medallist in their first game but then find it gets tougher when they have to do more than “their thing”.

100% correct.

Although, sometimes coaches can over complicate their instructions.

This can possibly have a negative impact (or put doubt into some players minds), especially if they're not particulatly sagacious individuals.

Maybe, though I doubt the coaches gave him instructions different to what they’ve been training all summer.

For sure and I'm not suggesting it should be otherwise. I just think that given those predictable strictures Caiden didn't flourish and also was limited in the options he could take, going some way to explaining why he looked less than a million bucks. Put differently: we should factor this in when assessing Caiden's pedestrian performance.
