IIRC up until sometime in the 1970's
I think Ray Shaw was the first to break it, by keeping #23 when he became captain.

Maybe the captain could wear 42!?!?!Tradition started with Harry Collier 1936.
Then continued...thru to 1959.
Murray Weideman wore 1 1960-63 as Captain.
Ray Gabelich wore 1 1964-65 as Captain.
Des Tuddenham wore 1 1966-69 & 1976 as Captain.
Terry Waters wore 1 1970-71 as Captain.
Wayne Richardson wore 1 from 1971-75 as Captain.
Max Richardson wore 1 1977 as Captain.
Len Thompson wore 1 1978 as Captain.
So the Captain wore 1 from 1936 until 1978.
Ray Shaw was the first to break the 42 year tradition in 1979.

Probably from winning the first spoon in 76, the club then went outside for a coach for the first time. Some fine research there MML.
One interesting thing which I had forgotten is the number of different captains we had in a short space of time.
Every year from 1975-79 we had a change of captain.

So an unsettled time. They seemed to be giving the captaincy to long term club servents, Tuddy, Max & Thommo.
Until the next generation took over (Ray Shaw).
It was amazing what Hafey did with Collingwood in 1977.
Correct, in 1979 when Shaw decided to stay with his 23, there was no player wearing 1 that year.So that woul mean Ricky Barham would have been the first player not as Captain to wear number 1... in 42 years.
Maybe they changed the rule to pay respect to Tricky Ricky?
Yes indeed. Deserved 1 at least.still shake my head at the Hafey era - so many 'if onlys'
we deserved to win at least one.

An interesting time...seeing Collingwood play in 4 Grand Finals in 5 years...so much joy during the season & the first 3 weeks of September...then...
The entire Football world was loving it...just waiting for Collingwood to fail again...the jokes, the media, it was tough.
Hafey was actually trying to 'moneyball' a flag, by bringing in recycled players, who weren't stars (or had past their use by date) but were willing to have a crack...Craig Davis, Ray Bryne, Russel Ohlsen, Kevin Morris, David Young, Mike Woolnough, Allen Edwards, Ross Brewer, Geoff Austen, Gerald Betts, Sam Kekovich, Ted Carroll, Laurie Sandilands, Ian Low, Alan Davis, Graeme Allan & Warwick Irwin to name a few.
This failure (to win a flag) laid the ground work for Ranald McDonalds New Magpies...high spending, big name recruits...which also failed & sent the club to the edge of bankruptcy.
1990 was such a joy after so much pain...
I must want to see it come out 25 times a year.Don't understand the #35 jumper hate.

It serves a practical purpose ...
... To instill in our most promising first year player a culture of sacrifice (Presti's 2010 GF)
What's wrong with creating a new tradition? They have to start sometime.
We'll get used to it ... Kinda like how we got used to the Captain not wearing the number 1.
