Joel Amartey
Joel Amartey has shown strong form in the ruck and as a key-position player at both ends of the ground since being drafted to the Sydney Swans as a rookie ahead of season 2018. The Ghanaian-Australian produced arguably his best performance of the 2019 season against Sydney University in Round 6, which saw him collect 42 hit-outs and a goal. In season 2020, he made his AFL debut against Brisbane Lions in Round 17 after producing some strong individual performances in scrimmage matches, and impressed with eight hit-outs and two inside 50.

Joel Amartey
DOB: 02 September 1999
DEBUT: 2020

That’s pisssd me right off

Grundy was ****ing around with his shoelaces for to long , idiot he is in that play.

Heeney has to take it then then they won the clearance
I kinda liked Grundy's whole 'zen guru' vibe when he came to the club. His intonation and the way he approached things seemed refreshing and different to the usual stuff dished up by footballers in interviews and such.

And maybe it is a pleasure to be around for his teammates and stuff. I won't presume to know anything about that.

But having watched him over the last season and a bit, even when he was playing some great footy, I can't help but wonder if his zen guru vibe makes him a bit of a... trying to think of a polite word here... a donkey on the football field.

He just does some baffling things that make it seem like he is not on planet SCG, but somewhere else entirely.

I watch him do his laces thinking he knows the game will continue. He was that casual just taking the piss it seemed

The second ruck issue is interesting. Physically Amartey has the tools to do it with his height and leap but it doesn’t work because he doesn’t have the nous to do it (see him wandering away from Meek that resulted in his first goal in the first quarter) and he’s also made himself too valuable as a forward to take him away.

That becomes problematic because then you need someone else to play second ruck. That person needs to be tall enough but also likely be able to take a bit of time forward where being agile is more important than ever. McLean has the first part but not the second. And when we’ve already got Amartey as one of the talls, we’ve already got a forward line that may be a little slow on the ground, although Amartey chases hard.

From there, Logan can’t ruck so strike him out - then maybe it’s Buller if he’s more mobile than McLean? Tricky problem unless we play a second ruck who only goes between ruck and the bench. But that may compromise flexibility and running power elsewhere.

Tricky answer to come up with on this one
At this stage IMO it has to be McLean until Buller shows himself to have some advantages. I have suggested more than once that McLean should play in the traditional ruck position on the fat side behind the play rather than in front of the ball. Allow Grundy to play more as a midfielder.
Reevaluate if Buller shows something.
Once Logan is fit Tom moves back.

For a senior player & assume a leader that was a shit moment. I hope it gets highlighted.

I think that moment sums up the Swans. Far too casual. No wonder Cox was preaching competitiveness during pre-season. Too many casual efforts. That's why our best looks amazing because it has to be amazing to cover our ass.

Competitiveness is one area where it's clicked for Amartey imo. That's contributed in his improved performance last year & this pre-season.

Haven't we all got off topic

Deserves to be on the front page

Improved consistency and fitness, I have doubted him over the years but not only kicking goals, but applying pressure.

Just needs to lead more and grab a few marks but he is having a good year

Could see his promise in VFL years ago, especially 2022 when he kicked 37.21 from 14 games (2 of which I remember he went off before half time), while rucking part time too. Often looked too much for defenders to handle. Some glimpses at senior level too back then.

Got sledged plenty on this board, but looking like he just needed an injury free run to build fitness and confidence. As well as obviously the strength and experience that comes with age and exposure. Only 25, which for a KPF means the best years should be ahead.

Played 2 years of juniors at my club , you could see talent , but very raw . His kicking has improved , even from U18 level
