Reminds me of someone who should be playing for the Bulldogs.

Totally agree. Good hard trier, someone who will give their all, but just doesn't have the polish for a top side.

Over the years we've been starved of that real mongrel type footballer and when Kommer came onto the scene showing this trait we all salivated at the return of this trait to our club.
He's now been found out in the skills department, which another preseason and some VFL can fix, and is not the small forward type the forward line requires.
Possibly have the option of running through the midfield from the back pocket? As being a defensive forward requires you to actually dangerous up there. Quickly joining the "depth player" club.

why does one need a photographic memory to determine a players characteristics. It was appparent during the NAb cup that kommer didnt have predatory forward instincts.

Took this from another thread, to keep it on topic:
That Kommer does next to nothing and that TRB has invented a meaningless role for him to play because they like his attitude. The specialist zone filler, 10 pressure act, 2 tackle a game position doesn't require, speed, stamina or skill that is beyond any player on our list that isn't in his first year or a 6'5" + key position player.

If someone like Pears, Hardingham, van Unen or anyone else is in good form, but not as a forward, he should get a gig because basically anyone that can play football is capable of playing the same role by default. I see plenty of guys on the list who have strengths that would benefit to the side.
To be fair they've been doing it before this year.

McVeigh and Welsh both practically had a position created for them to remain in the side after they were pushed out of the backline and midfield.

Winderlich is the one that's taken that spot IMO, whereas Kommer's doing what Monfries was (defensive jobs with not much else to offer).

I really liked Kommer's games against Adelaide and...I think it was Richmond(?). His defensive pressure was awesome, and that would be enough to keep him in the side for mine.

But he hasn't really done that most weeks, and when you're not offering much offensively, that's not good enough.

People were on Monfries' case for a fair while because he was seen to be taking up a forward line spot that could be better filled by an effective small forward (Jetta, Dell) or taken over by a different sort of player (Crameri, Gumby).

Now that Kommer's doing that role, are people happy? Do they think he's an improvement on Monfries?

Numbers are not everything, and it is always harsh comparing a first year player with an experienced player, but they give a pretty good indication of how much of a down grade it is

Is he actually doing the same role though? Before last week I had questioned what he is actually in the team for so when he was named ahead of Jetta again I fully expected him to stand next to Walker at the first bounce. Instead I see Winderlich as his opponent and Kommer everytime I looked was on either Tuohy or Simpson, and most Blues fans have posted it was Simpsons best game of the year. If he gets picked again this week we are at u/14's level in just gifting games because he trains hard and runs around crazy over-comitting to tackles generally looking like a spud. Kommer is the new 'Quinn'.

Harsh.

Rest of the year in the midfield for the VFL team, strong pre-season and can play midfield in the AFL team in 2014.

Shows midfield traits and has something to work with next year.

Well he has a very limited skill set so I really doubt whether he does have any midfield traits other than attack on the contest.

He played midfield in the WAFL - EFC converted him into a defensive forward. Kommer's a sweet mover, decent pace, fairly clean ball handler, hunts the ball, fairly good in traffic. He's a midfielder.

Just not polished enough ATM,
Think we should definitely persist with him although it should be done in the vfl. Nick will end up being a good player ultimately though.

Meh, id much rather have a guy in the team that goes in hard at every contest, stands up for the club, plays every game like its his last than a player like jetta

Not really. I think his main issue is that he's not terribly prolific. More strength, a bigger tank and he'll be a good player. He's can mark cleanly, and he seems to read the play pretty well I haven't seen too many utter clangers from him, just a lot of tackles that get brushed aside.

Hocking's probably the only one that I've noticed to consistently "run both ways".

Goddard's usually quite good, but even he has his few moments (pretty normal), likewise Howlett.

I've posted on this before, but I feel like we're trying to create a place in the team for Kommer in response to a number of players' utter lack of defensive effort. It's as though we're trying to make up for the deficiencies of a number of players with the purely defensive capabilities of one or maybe two (with Davey), and Kommer isn't particularly influential himself.

I like the message that was sent that if you commit like this guy you will get games.
But even that is now a bit stale. And I kind of feel that this guy is a liability with the ball in hand. Imagine if we could swap him with someone who was a dangerous forward, we would in a heartbeat.

Where is Merrett at?

Ahhh Quinny, fond memories of joining in with the rest of the crowd laughing at/with Quinny when he got the ball and panicked!!

Great observation Tayteridge. I've pondered myself whether Kommer's main purpose is in being a role model for the work ethic that the coach wants to embed in the team. Just for clarity, I'm in the middle on Kommer. I don't mind him in the team but I also don't mind if he comes in and out as needed.

He would have to actually do the work to be an effective role model. What you see on TV is what you get with the guy, if it is all about pressure, he is woefully inadequate.

I don't agree with that.

There's a lot more to it than what's captured on TV.

His running after opposition forwards is pretty good, and what's most impressive is he puts in a lot of repeated sprints, as opposed to Winderlich who might put in one and then jog back to position.
