Just about everyone in the media has 'their' team. You guys probably get great joy listening to Tom Harley talking in cliches each week and using Geelong players nicknames.

I heard a lot of people calling SEN about this on the way home after Friday's match, so decided to pay attention (as much as I could, because I still got caught up in the match itself). I'm happy to be corrected if someone can point out where, but the only time I noticed Harley use a nickname was after the match when he said 'Dasher' during the pointless freeze cam segment.

If anything, McAvaney is worse when it comes to nicknames - has acted like he's best friends with the whole AFL over the years: 'Bucks', 'Daisy', 'Buddy'... Just use their actual names FFS.

Nothing is worse than the umps using nicknames. Kills me every time I hear that.

i think something needs to be done about biased commentary teams though, particularly when the broadcast leaves its home state. i had to listen to the ABC coverage of the geelong v brisbane game a couple of weeks ago with a commentary team full of ex-lions players who actually tried to sugar-coat an 81 point loss.

I don't know about that. Love listening to the 5AA commentary on the 2007 Grand Final DVD. "Who's on Johnson? Who's on Johnson?"

I just can't listen to football calls on the radio these days, but in terms of pre-match give me anything with the outstanding Gerard Whately and i'm happy.

Gerard Whately is clearly my favourite caller. Excellent caller, also writes a nice article. ABC is fantastic.

Yeah I'm a big Whately fan too, he's made for commentary, I like his minority report segment on Before the Bounce on friday nights, I will however, always maintain that my favourite caller on any form of media was Clinton Grybas, he was unbiased and had better knowledge of the game than any other caller, a really good host of White Line Fever too, sad he ain't here anymore

Whately is the top caller in football just now. Cometti is gradually disappearing up his own arse and the rest have never quite been up to scratch (who thought bringing Sandy Roberts back to football was a good idea? Yeesh!). Whately paces his call very well, has an excellent vocabulary and a wry sense of humour that never gets in the way (never says anything especially funny, just makes good observations). Called the OZ vs NZ friendly the other night and did a good job of that too. Dan Lonergan holds his own and while he barely gets a mention, Adam White is enthusiastic without losing it. Called Ablett's long goal against Collingwood in the prelim very nicely. ABC and ABC only pour moi.

I dont know how I would call a game if Geelong were losing by 15 goals...

Fair to say the producers would have worn out the "BEEEEEP" button by three quarter time.

The 5AA commentary is an absolute pisser, Nothing makes me happy like someone else's misery.

Listened to the Drawn Grand Final with ABC720 coverage and ABC Grandstand is the best and should be featured in Grand Final DVD's along with 1116 SEN, 95.5 K-Rock and Triple M.

I don't see how could justify having K-Rock for this GF, I was listenting to Whately and the boys as well.

At least you will get good value out of this years GF DVD - its gonna be a double pack!!

Personally, I have turned back to MMM this year for commentary. I love BT, but with him and shaw on the same team 3AW has, as the OP said, gone totally Collingwood bias.

BT has his hand on it when it comes to Leon, guess there wasn't much joy to be had when his love child went AWOL again in a big game.
