Why not?No way should we have more sides in NSW/QLD than in WA/SA
Because Peter Fitzsimmon's daughter's friend says so...
In all seriousness I can see a regional NSW team in 40 years. But I'll be past caring by that point. I'll be too busy uploading my consciousness into an immortal, android body and booking my solar system cruise before settling down in a nice condo on Mars.
And where would that regional team be, maybe Canberra encompassing the Riverina ?
There is only 2 spots in NSW, both involve Sydney, one North and one S/SW, both are big population areas that would need big funding, although North to CC and Newcastle has arguably better grass roots football than Sydney south and south west.
From Liverpool across to the airport and down to Heathcote and Cronulla across to Campelltown is a huge area and that would be the next Sydney team in 30 years![]()
Sure. GWS is in the sweet spot for growth. But the Hunter region is predicted to have a population of around 1m by 2050. So Newcastle?
Sounds like a great place. The Black Diamond cup in Newcastle is supposedly the oldest continuous cup in Australian Football.Sure. GWS is in the sweet spot for growth. But the Hunter region is predicted to have a population of around 1m by 2050. So Newcastle?
The more teams we add, the more it dilutes the talent, the more that makes the game less attractive. Perhaps when GWS and the Swans are resounding successes then they can think about it.
Agreed, they need to get going first. Expanding the comp dilutes the talent. New sides need to support this by growing the game and expanding the participation in Aussie rules.I think by the time GWS has very strong junior growth in its area and sells out its membership at spotless it is time for a third team, when that is is anyones guess, my guess is 10 years.

Not sure why people are pushing around numbers like 30 years. I'd say 20 years at max, probably aiming for 15 years.
30 years ago was 1986. ALOT had changed in football and other sports since then.
20 years ago was 1996, and think how much the landscape has changed since then.
I think GWS will need 20 years to consolidate its position. And no...beating a few sides this year and making finals doesn't count. The Swans made the finals in 1987 and were almost extinct within a couple of years. We're talking 20 years to build a supporter base of 24k rusted on supporters which will future proof the side. The Swans landed in '83 and didn't have that until the late 90's.
If the AFL were serious about basing a team north of Sydney, they would need to invest a lot of money over the next 20-30 years to build the grassroots support necessary to justify the money.
As for the AFL talent pool, that's why the Academy system is so important. It needs to be producing local talent on a regular basis (and enough of it, so that it's feeding players directly into other clubs around the country) before any of that will be possible.
**** OFF!Should be in the northwest.
Baulko-Penno
Perth Pirates (WA/SA - 5)No way should we have more sides in NSW/QLD than in WA/SA

merging Baulko-Penno would be like having the Collingwood Blues or Adelaide Power in the AFL.
Do not merge 2 fierce rivals.
As an ex Penno player, I'd completely stop giving a shit about the club if we got in bed with Baulko/East Coast.
Perth Pirates (WA/SA - 5)
Castle Coast Cougars (NSW/QLD - 5) - Newcastle & Central Coast - it's the biggest populated area in Australia without an AFL team. Over 1 million people there - plus the NSW North Coast obviously.
20 Team AFL.
4 Divisions of 5.
AFL West (WA/SA)
AFL North (NSW/QLD)
AFL South (5 VIC)
AFL Central (5 VIC)
Too easy.
Play own division twice (Home & Away) - 8 Games and every other team once (15 games) - total 23 Matches spread over 25 weeks.
The rankings below don't include the Central Coast obviously.
Rank GCCSA/SUA State/Territory June 2014[1]

8 Canberra-Queanbeyan Australian Capital Territory/New South Wales 422,510 1.80%

Would be a damn shame to have a third NSW team over a Tassie team.
Keep trolling troling trolling
The really big, huge, enormous problem with Newcastle is the lack of a decent ground, NSW AFL and NSW cricket are willing to provide some funds to upgrade Newcastle number 1 sportsground but so far the council has not come to the party, Newcastle City AFL club plays there.
But as far as grassroots footy goes it is probably as strong as GWS, maybe stronger.
