Smith to miss Port clash

An inner ear infection has ruled Swans defender Nick Smith out of Saturday afternoon’s clash with Port Adelaide at AAMI Stadium.

Smith’s condition, which has failed to improve throughout the week, has resulted in the 23-year-old suffering a slight case of vertigo.

Swans coach John Longmire said Smith had been unable to train all week because of the infection.

“He’s got a virus that has knocked him around pretty badly,” he said.

“It’s a severe inner infection, so it’s meant he’s got a touch of vertigo, so he’s not playing this week.

“He’s an important player for us but hopefully he gets better soon.”

Smith pleased to be back

“I was a little bit nervous (going into the Hawthorn game) because I’d been a bit dizzy the last couple of weeks with my illness, but it was definitely good to get back out there and I felt fine,” Smith said about his return against the Hawks.

“Initially, (the virus) was really bad. I couldn’t stand up and I couldn’t sit up, and I was pretty nauseous.

“(I spent) a couple of days in hospital, but then got out and it was just a slow build-up into what I could do. I was doing a lot of catching of balls - tennis balls, footies, and that kind of thing - to get my balance and coordination back.

“I think anytime you’re watching your team mates play it’s pretty frustrating, and it was (frustrating) because I could still run, I could still do weights, I just couldn’t catch the footy as well as I would have liked.”

Sickbed to sensational

Smith's outstanding form is a huge relief after initial fears the illness could become a long-term problem.

He was diagnosed with vestibular neuronitis - the same inner ear condition which forced tennis player Alicia Molik to take an extended break from sport.

"Initially it was really bad, I couldn't stand up and I couldn't sit up and I was pretty nauseous," Smith said.

Smith came on during during the third quarter of the match in Launceston and barely missed a beat as the Swans cemented their best start to a season since 1986.
