Brent Renouf will have to shoulder the load for most of the season. Renouf is still developing and is very much a work in progress. He was a member of the 2008 premiership team, but has little impact at the stoppages, can't play forward and barely touches the footy around the ground. Simon Taylor has the most experience, but broke his leg during pre-season and is now at least three months away. Max Bailey never has his body right and new recruit Wayde Skipper is unavailable for a lengthy period with a hamstring. Regardless of his fitness, Skipper was a poor recruiting move by Hawthorn. He's a b-grade ruckman, at best, and couldn't even get a game at the Bulldogs when he was there.

And they have also been battling along with just one fit ruckman in Brent Renouf since the start of the season with big men Wayde Skipper (hamstring), Max Bailey (knee) and Simon Taylor (broken leg) all sidelined long-term while Rhan Hooper (hamstring) and Brad Sewell (broken collarbone) are unlikely to return this week.
But at least the Hawks will regain 2008 Coleman Medallist Lance Franklin and young gun Liam Shiels from suspension this week.

HAWTHORN ruckman Max Bailey could be back training with the senior group within a month.

Bailey has been in the Hawthorn rehab group since rupturing his ACL last year against Essendon in round 22.

The Hawks suffered a series of injuries to their ruckmen over the pre-season with Simon Taylor and Wayde Skipper both going down with long-term injuries, leaving Brent Renouf to shoulder most of the ruck load.

Renouf has been carrying the ruck stocks for the Hawks in the absence of injured teammates Simon Taylor (fractured lower leg), Wayde Skipper (hamstring) and Max Bailey (knee) and, while being more than serviceable, has noticeably tired late in games.

Ruckman Wade Skipper (hamstring) is at least a fortnight away as is star recruit Shaun Burgoyne (jaw). The biggest worry for Alastair Clarkson, though, is that Lance Franklin tweaked his ankle at training on Wednesday. So far it seems Buddy's still travelling, which will come as a huge relief for his coach and all nightclub owners in Northbridge.

NORTH BALLARAT: The VFL's top ruckman Orren Stephenson has watched Hawthorn battle with one fit ruckman and wished he could jump in and fill the void.
The 27-year-old, who trained with Hawthorn over the pre-season before the Hawks chose Wayde Skipper ahead of him in last year's rookie draft, is hoping for third time lucky after a pre-season stint with Carlton in 2007. "I was at the game in Ballarat when Simon [Taylor] went down. I thought there's an opportunity there and Skip will get a game here," he said.

Hawks midfielder Jordan Lewis said former Bulldogs ruckman Wayde Skipper would also be a chance to play in what he said would be a danger game at the MCG.

The selection committee at Hawthorn is blessed with choices this week as Lance Franklin, Sam Mitchell, Shaun Burgoyne and Rhan Hooper all look set to return from injury. Wayde Skipper could also be in line to bolster the ruck stocks after playing well for VFL side Box Hill last week. Skipper would have to be elevated from the rookie list, as would Luke Breust who would come into consideration after a five goal haul for Box Hill.

Former Western Bulldogs utility Wayde Skipper will also play his first match for Hawthorn - the 194cm rookie expected to support Brent Renouf in the ruck.

gez the hawks really has a soft spot for injury prone ruckman. still think that clarko has the wrong blokes in the coaching box.

However Clarkson believes there is much for the Hawks to take out of the game in particular the successful return of skipper Sam Mitchell - who made the crucial match saving tackle on Shane Tuck - from injury as well as the promising debuts of former Port star Shaun Burgoyne and ex-Bulldog Wayde Skipper, who gave Brent Renouf some much-needed help in the ruck.
