Jake Lloyd

Player Profile

Jake Lloyd is a ball magnet, an endurance machine, a clean user of the footy and a calming influence on the Sydney Swans’ half-back line. The former rookie-listed Swan averaged 27.22 disposals per match between 2016 and 2019 and won the club’s 2018 Bob Skilton Medal. Lloyd became the quickest Swan in history to reach 100 senior games when he ran out against Hawthorn at the MCG in Round 8, 2018. He was then recognised as one of the best players in the league when he was selected for Victoria in the State of Origin match for bushfire relief in February 2019. Draft history: 2013 Rookie Draft selection (Sydney) No. 15; 2014 AFL Draft rookie elevation (Sydney).

there is the option of trying hiscox, though i'm aware his foot skills aren't the best at the moment. rohan obviously doesn't have the endurance as you've said. i do like cunningham/towers in that position as they have the combination of speed and endurance requires to go with players like hill and smith..

But they simply don't find enough of the footy...Lloyd is a proven ball-winner.

just going from observation, i wouldn't of thought he was a great contested ball winner. he seems to get pushed off the ball a bit. but if the stats say that, fair enough. in terms of team balance though i'd rather someone with pace and a penetrating kick. i even thought this before jetta left, now we're another one down in that area.

But you wanted him in the reserves...I took that to mean you thought there were better options in our current squad? As you say, we are another player like this down without Jetta so surely now of all times is when you would want Lloyd playing?

i meant i want another player with pace and a penetrating kick. i don't regard lloyd as being good enough in either aspect. i actually think cunningham's kick is more penetrating than lloyd's. i'd have lloyd merely as a backup if the above mentioned options don't work out.

Leonardis could be that guy. He seemed to have a bit of pace, evasion, and a nice kick. Of course he came on at 3/4 time when everyone else was run off their feet (so did Dawson, which is why i'm not excited yet), but i liked the way Leonardis moved and kicked. We could have one there, but it's far, far too early to tell based off 1 quarter of an NAB match.

Lloyd doesn't seem like a winger, he seems like a "utility mid" for want of a better term. He plays a bit inside, outside, forward and back. His short passing seems very good, but i kind of agree he doesn't seem to have a long penetrating kick. I look at him as the link in the chain from the inside mid extractors to the player who is going to take it forward. He's that first-third handball receive who gets it to the guy in space, or he runs to space for an easy outlet option for the defense. He does this pretty nicely, and doesn't seem to feel the need to hack it forward like most of our mids. I think unless we have someone else who can do this as well as Lloyd can (I can't think of one) then i prefer him in, otherwise we'll see a lot more bombs forward from Parker and Mitchell.

I guess in an ideal world McVeigh would be doing that distributing role in the contest, but he's needed off half back unfortunately

I have watched Lloyd pretty closely at senior level. Absolutely runs his arse off, covers a lot of ground. Ok so he isn't a natural ball winner as Hannebery, but he has played 40odd games and I wouldn't be betting against him becoming a very good footballer.

For his age and development I think he is coming along reasonably well. Looking forward to a break out year for him.

It's guys like Lloyd who can step up and take us back into contention this year. Cunningham is under more pressure than him IMO.

Excellent observation replicant. That said, I'd trade him in a heartbeat for someone who could receive the ball off him and give good delivery to our forwards/mids. Unfortunately that's a huge missing link for us

Played 60 games out of 61 since his debut, and averages around 20 possesions. Pretty good work really, I'm glad he is locked away.
That's a good effort. He's much better bang for our buck than some players who are always injured.

I'm glad he signed on. Absolutely zero press about his contract all year. But he's just quietly got on with it.

Still goes missing too often in the big games. Not alone in that.

Not sure you play both Lloyd and Mitchell in the same team. Exploited by Hawthorn in the recent game.

This

Hasn't played one decent game against the Hawks, which is problematic given that we''ll need to beat them in the finals

He's hardly our worst offender. His contract would be cheap, he plays his role and he runs all day. Good piece of business!

good signing vastly under rated

Can't agree that he's underrated, he's just an average foot soldier. There's nothing wrong with that, all teams need them but he has gone MIA in big games more than once
thoughts on sinclair?
