Deserves his spot on the list as a backup player, but i would be worried if he is starting round one..
I think he really struggles when isolated one on one with his opponent especially in a marking contests, which is strange considering he can actually take a strong intercept mark..
I would like to see him really dominate the VFL early this year and earn his spot in the team putting pressure on the likes of Bags and Gleeson.

I'd take him back. Should have tossed 15 others out the door at Tigerland before Matty Dea.

Starting with Hampson and Houli.

Matt's officially de-Richmondised so that's a plus.

I'd have Dea playing the 3rd defender role for R1 right now. Francis has had his injury setback, Ambrose is better suited to a complete lockdown role and thus backup for Hartley and Hurley, Hooker playing forward, Ridley isn't ready, brown better suited to one of the two KD spots or forward so I'd have Dea in the side right now. Spoils well, intercept marking is good and provides some drive from defence on occasions.

Think this bloke is pretty stiff not to be in the side. Everyone seems to love Gleeson who looks good coming in 3rd man but seriously struggles at negating his actual opponent. For mine Dea offers almost as much rebound, is just as good 3rd man up and is hard to beat one on one.

I doubt he was dropped on form - might have been a bit sore so rested I'd guess.

He does some good things but I just don't see it with Gleeson he's too light and skinny as a HBF imo Dea smashes blokes when the ball comes in his area.

Don't think he's compe with Gleeson (who for mine is best 22) but Baguley.

My preferred back 6 is:

FB: McGrath - Hartley - Brown/Ambrose
HB: Kelly - Hurley - Dea

With Goddard as the 7th bloke who rotates through.
I feel like Gleeson's second half of last season and his current pre-season (not only his best; I'd say one of the team's best) is underrated on here. Give me Gleeson over all three smalls you listed there

Dea > Gleeson on 2016 form. Dea took the better forward 90% of the time, is stronger in one on contests and had identical stats.

I'd be happy to play both against Hawthorn considering the amount of lead up forwards they have.

Dea had a more consistent year, I'd agree, but Gleeson's best is better. His pre-season has been excellent too.

Just thinking aloud here, but could Dea transition into a sort of defensive midfielder role? We have a log jam at half back and really only Hocking and Bird in the defensive midfielder role. Would only need 15 touches a game.

I'm not sure we do have a log jam with small-medium defenders. We lost Hibberd, Kelly is in his last year, Baguley looks cooked, McGrath is only a rookie, Morgan hasn't done much, McNiece is unproven, Ridley out most of year, Long is too raw, McKenna is still learning the game, Tippa is playing forward, Francis is having injury issues. Gleeson looks our best flanker whilst Dea looks handy as a 3rd defender type. I'd say we are actually light on hence why they are looking at using Stanton there.

We have a lot of them on the list. You listed 12 there and forgot to add Goddard and J Merrett as players off HB. Although I'm unsure why you listed Long there, he plays HF/mid. With that in mind we have 14/44 small/medium defenders, which is around 30% of the list.

A lot of them aren't that good at present though and therefore not likely to feature in our best 22. Goddard is better on a wing and Jerrett has been average at best and has only played one or two practice matches as a defender. Long has spent more time off half back than Jerrett has and is more defensively minded but raw. We have much better quality in midfield so I back to the original concept I don't see the value in moving Dea out of defence into midfield as the team would be stronger with him as a defender.

Well that's just plain wrong about Long. His entire two years here have been playing wing and forward.
