Having an 'open mind' means looking beyond the property IMO. Sure he might be 'somewhere' on the 600 sq.m property, but if he is, then how did he get so far away without leaving a trace? Answer = human intervention. My guess is police have had an open mind and been looking for any signs of where Gus could be during the searches. 600 square kms is a huge area. I’d imagine you might not have to leave the property.
Human intervention probably means a vehicle of some sort, which means roads, which lead away from the property.
It also means people - what facts can be collected about the people associated with Gus and the property? These facts can then lead to alternate search locations. Where do these people live or work or frequent? What vehicles do they have access to? What facts can be collected about these people, vehicles, and locations?
To continue to randomly search the far reaches of the property is not a logical, cost-effective or resource-effective approach IMO.
