5 very important players in 2009

My top five important movers for next year

1. Cam Cloke. Was very good for us when he first came over. Has a lot of potential and is only still what, 23? nathan Buckley spoke very highly of him, said he has a massive engine. Would love to see him hover around inside the forward 50 and add to our goal kickers. He has a beautiful kick, and could be very very good for us up forward.

2. Marc Murphy. Stand up and keep doing what he's been doing, and just earn that little superstar status even more :) Our midfield needs to get better and better if we are to play finals.

3. Jarrad Waite. Let this guy roam on the wing, play a role similar to what Richo did this year. He's so athletic, and can be good around goals, gives us lovely run and aggression out of the back line too.

4. Andrew Walker... if we don't shop him off. Needs to stand up and provide top notch support to Murphy and Gibbs. The three of them could be the making of something very special... if they want to be.

5. Brendan Fevola. Absolute superstar, and I can't believe I was one of many a few years ago who toyed with the idea of the club trading him. Very very glad he's on our side and no one else's. Was brilliant this year, not just kicking goals through the sticks, but his forward-line pressure and team work this year was the best of all his years. He needs to keep improving on these aspects, because when he's on song, we're on song.

dude no affence but wat r u thinking sayin that setanta has shown he can play forward, he is a complete hack can't do anything and if he gets even 1 more game for us i will kill myself.

May I suggest before you pull the trigger you firstly watch the Blues vs PIes round 4 game this year. Setanta kicked the opening goal from about 45m after a great lead to the fat side.........and set up Fev for a couple more with great passes.........then call the number above before round 1 next year.:thumbsu:

Ok so he kicks 1 good goal, way that up against all the shit stuff he has done.
You can't tell me that everytime he has the ball in his hands you aren't shiting yourself. You may be right in saying he should play forward as he can only miss goals rather than give them to the opposition as he did playing back lol

Try watching him next time. Setanta's disposal is very good. I'd rather he kicked it than a number of other senior players including up until lately, Paul Bower.

So no, I'm not shitting myself. Maybe you should watch again without your obvious bias.

yeah he's not the only 1, i just don't think he is much chop and strugled to get a game last year. I would be surprised if he wasn't delisted

That much is obvious.
Is it the competitive nature.......ability to play forwards, back and ruck.........good goal sense........complete shutdown of Travis Cloke in the second game this year.........or that he is rarely beaten by his opponent when the ball hits the ground..........or just the fact he looks a bit unco that you don't like?:o
and strugled to get a game last year. I would be surprised if he wasn't delisted
Yeah......was lucky to play 12 games before getting injured......not.

It's fine to have an opinion, but when you base it on a feeling rather than facts you look a little silly.

The only way he won't play for us next year.....and hence the only way for you to live, is if he decides to go home. The club will want him back. Mark it down.

Before St Kilda traded Locket, Barry Hall was a thuggish HBF and Robert Heatley was an average reserves forward.;)

History has shown that without Fev in our side we tend to still do O.K. and you would see the likes of Fisher, Kreuzer, Cloke, Edwards, and Hartlett if fit all take their chances, as rather than being targets once a game, they would be targets much more.

The whole "lose Fev (either through injury or trade) and we are gone" thing is a ruse.

Do you mean Jason Heatley? He is my senior coach now lol i think he would destroy you if he heard you say that, he is one scary man.

Sorry....quite right, it was Jason.

No coincidence that Plugger left in 95, and Heatley rose to prominence in his absence in 96/97.

Point re Fev leaving and others stepping up is valid IMO.

*Bump* :p

I think this is a very interesting and very good thread to read. I was going to start a thread not to dissimilar to this, due to the standard of this i may as well put my thoughts here.

To me, there are 2 players that stand out the most with regards to importance next year and it isn't the top line players. I think the way to win games consistently is if you have a more even 22 across the board with regards to talent. Not only that but i think these two are really important to our structure.

Cameron Cloke:

If Cam can continue his promising performance at the back end of last year play as a lead-up, hard working CHF then that makes our structure that whole lot stronger. It's pretty evident that this type of player is needed, a target across HF whether it be a leading or pack marking player. Cloke showed late last year he is willing to put in the hard yards, both his marking and kicking for goal is pretty good. He showed up to pre-season in great shape which shows he means business and willingness to learn, very good start. If he can step up his play and play consistent footy across half forward, this will make our forward structure that much better. It would go a long way to winning more games.

On the flip side, if he struggles, who do we try and rotate through that area, Kruezer? a 19 year old who is still learning the game?, Hartlett? a fella who struggles to stay on the park for more than 3 games straight?, Waite? some one who showed promise down back? I think Cloke is paramount to our structure and i hope he stands up and performs.

Setanta O'hAilpin:

The big irishman, there are definitely some conflicting comments on him around here but i think he is very important. Firstly the passion and aggression he bring is important to the team and right now, we really are lacking in this area. I love it when he gets into the oppositions face, it shows he plays with pride. Secondly, with regards to the structure, he gives us that different dimension down back. Being able to play on the tall forwards or resting ruckman. You look at our final few games when he didn't play, Moran, Hale, Brown etc all gave us a touch up. Not only that but it releases Waite to play an attacking brand of footy either across half back or on the wing. If Setanta can stay fight and take his game up a notch, it will be that much better for our team.

Again, on the flip side, what happens when Hale, Brown, Sandilands, Cox etc goes forward? We put Waite on them.......wait, then we loose our attacking ability from defense and our 3rd man up. Ratten seems to have hopes for Setanta down back and i think he is an important player, he really needs to stand up and show his worth.

I don't think either of these two are fellas are going to be start but if both can stay on the park and take there level up a notch it will be a whole lot benefical to our structure/team.

Cameron Cloke needs to have a chat with Earl Spalding.

That's the role we need him to play next year. Hit the packs hard, real hard.

Run all day, create an option even if the ball doesn't come, back up and do it all again.

Have Fisher play the floating forward behind him, Fev as the focal point.

Create options.

Doesn't really matter how many goals he kicks, there are plenty of others to do that.

Get Betts and Yarran at his feet, and have Walker and Grigg streaming through for whatevers left.

Bang.... Bang ....who kicked the last.

I couldn't agree more. The last time we had a really potent forward line capable of winning a flag, 95, we had Earl crashing packs and kicking a few (not many) goals, it didnt matter that Earl didnt kick too many because we had Sticks marking out of the goal square at FF and Pierce leading out of the pocket and Klape from memory got about 20 from a HFF. And Diesel, Braddles, Hogg, Ratts, Browny constantly delivering the ball forward.

So whilst this would be a good new thread compare 95 to 09 and it could read Fev = Sticks, Cloke = Earl except likely to get more goals than Earl, Yarren = Pierce, Murphy = Braddles, Judd = Diesel, And whilst there is no comparison in class or playing style if we could get Santana playing a Peter Dean role, aggressive backman, and Waite playing a McKay type run off hb role, Jamo a SOS role, Wiggins a Special Fried role, Bentick or Hadley in and under like Ratts and Hoggy were, Betts a Bond role (whilst Bond did not play in the GF team, he did have a good year and was a contibutor to us finishing on top), Krouze a Kouta role, more a traditional RR rather than ruck, Warnock - Harry,......its starting to look like a good side on the verge of great....

Perhaps we are getting a bit ahead of ourselves, but its been a long time since I have felt this confident that we have the players with enough skill, now I truly believe it is only attitude that can stop us. When 2 equally talented and fit teams play it is desire that makes the difference. If we have the desire then we are on the verge of great.....

1. Walker. Needs to have a gun year, and be like it every year from now on in.

2. Simpson. Needs to follow Walker's year. These two should step up and be really dangerous parts of our midfield.

3. Bower. To join Jamison and Waite as forces to be reckoned with down back.

4. Cloke. Move the lad forward and let him kick 2 or 3 every game for us

5. Warnock needs to palm that ball down beautifully into the hands of Judd and Murphy every game.
