Here's a couple of ideas for you AFL

Stop taking your cue from the big Melbourne clubs. What a rorting crock of poo NGA's are. Why have we got them? Because Maguire and other Melbourne clubs complained about the Northern academies. NGA's were always going to be a rort.

GF crowd, how about giving 35% of tickets each to the competing clubs, the other 30% for AFL to dish out to corporates. That corporates out number genuine fans is a disgrace.

It's an absolute rort that we have never had a Grand Final at the University of Tasmania Stadium.
Bloody oath. The Tasmanian people have had the rough end of the stick from the VFL / AFL for over 100 years.

Same with the northern territory people too.

As posted on another thread. The academies originally started around 2005 ish to help Brisbane and Sydney. The SA and WA and Victorian sides could have access to local talent die to their strong local leagues of the SANFL, WAFL , VFL and tac cup.

The QAFL isn't as strong as the SANFL and WAFL.

The Sydney AFL league is not as good as the other local leagues either so the alternative is to set up the academy systems.

Then you look at gold coast and greater western Sydney. They need the academy systems too. They don't have father son picks don't they?

Lol. Are you thick? None of those joints have domestic home teams in domestic leagues using those places as their home ground. Laphroaig is a good drop. You should change your name to Teachers or Vat 69.

fighting a prime Mike Tyson one on one from 1986-1989: unfair

Agree. But the corruption/nepotism/closed shop status that is at the heart of it deserves to be a discussion point.

Fine but not in every other thread and not in this thread when it is extremely unlikely to be included as part of the external review.

LOLLLLL How many of them laphroaigs you had tonight?

As above, you can whinge and moan all you like but the GF is going nowhere. It won't be moving from the G in our lifetimes and will likely still be played there many years beyond that. There is no way the MCC or Vic Govt will let it go, it's simply not happening so you may as well come to peace with it.

Well we shall see how it all ends up, won’t we.

Except that looking at the above, they are all neutral venues. No team, person or horse has a venue where they compete more so than anyone else on the above. Wembley is no ones home ground.

Its difficult when it’s all me me me. These guys only care about contacts, nepotism and keeping the right people happy.

Not by Westcoast fan logic. Let’s hypothetically assume West Coast could qualify as a team or individual to those events.

First you’ve got the general unfair disadvantage of travel which apparently will impact performance, but mostly for West Coast.

Then it’s too expensive for fans to attend. But mostly for West Coast fans.

In the case of the FA Cup final, if you are as unlucky and downtrodden by fate as West Coast supporters the likelihood will be that you play the final against Tottenham who used Wembley Stadium as a home ground from 2017 - 2019. So that’s a massive fixturing conspiracy and the game should be moved to Bogshire United’s ground.

In the case of Roland Garros, West Coast want the surface changed from clay to sand as, you know, there’s no clay in Perth. And, it’s definitely an Inside deal to keep it clay. Could easily be moved to Omaha.

The US Masters Golf: Augusta National. Unfair. Course isn’t as flat as those in Perth. Even more topograhical disadvantage here than for the Bangladeshy golfers.

The Melbourne Cup: Flemington Racecourse. Melbourne horses have a massive advantage. The course is too long compared to Belmont Park and it’s a Conspiracy that they won’t change it. Perth horses should start from the halfway line And be allowed to run clockwise like the rest of the country.

New York Marathon: Couldnt get pre-race routine feed at Hungry Jacks and instead had to settle for some place called Burger King.

Why didnt the West Australians build their new stadium to say 80,000 - 85,000 capacity?

Its their fault. They had their chance to build a huge case for future grand finals and threw it down the drain.

They dont deserve any grand final. The game and its supporters would be left stranded by grand finals in Perth.

Tens of thousands of Supporters and Members would miss out. The game would lose tens of millions of dollars. The grassroots would get funding cuts further impacting suburban and country footy.

Nah, WA had an opportunity. They made a commutment to a new stadium and then they went the cheap route saving money by building a small capacity stadium.

They should redevelop it again. Build it to 85,000 capacity and then come back with their arguments. Until then its a non debate. They dont have a stadium capable of doing an AFL grand final.

My gut feel is that the review will find a big change is required to keep the industry growing.
Industry growth through broadcasting deals and ads (and new richmond supporters ;)) can only get you so far before hitting a wall.

The next generation of supporters follow players more than they follow teams, they like the NBA model. They literally obsess over the shoes the player was wearing in one of his Instagram shots. This is why they were testing crap like AFLX.

It is a business after all so traditionalists like myself and many other on here will eventually lose out if change is what's required to keep them interested.

My concern is footy has as always been a heavy team based game, one or two great players doesn't equal success like it does in NBA (or to an extent soccer). How they bridge that will interesting. Maybe looking into the NFL model might help... or are they having the same issue as well?

Why are people arguing about the GF location in this thread? The external review will almost certainly not be looking at this, it will be a review of the governance framework of the AFL and the long term viability of the clubs. The Grand Final will never leave the MCG other than in extremely exceptional circumstances (1991, 2020).
The Southern Stand is going to be rebuilt at the end of this decade. Rather than do it in stages like 2004 - 2006, with three years of reduced crowds, I hope they do what they did in 1990/91 - knock the whole thing down and rebuild it quickly. Move the GF for a year and get it done within a season and a half. WA, SA, Qld and NSW can bid for the 2030 GF before it return to the 105k MCG until 2058.

The report needs to establish what the purpose is of the AFL. Is it to grow the game, or simply grow the league and it’s 18 clubs.
If it is to grow the game, then all decisions need to reflect that. A 20 - 30 year plan needs to be put in place regarding any new clubs, where games are played, how to grow the game. What are the priorities.
If it is just to look after the league and it’s clubs, then the AFL needs to step away from controlling other leagues.

Of course it was sh!t. That's what the VAFL wanted.

Sub standard venue in a non AFL state. Everyone could see it would be a crap event.

You reap what you sow!

You could also direct that last line at McGowan. If the entire finals series wasn't going to be played in the West then his border policy just made it impossible to hold the GF in Perth.

Hoping a discussion is had into a national reserves competition. Most sides have a reserves team or equivalent and the 2021 dogs bollocks competition of the "VFA teams plus reserves from Vic plus some host clubs plus the reserves sides from Qld and NSW" competition has an incredibly short shelf life. Plus curtain raisers are awesome.

Was it possible to have the GF in Adelaide?

Better stadium. Better crowds etc......

You reap what you sow and AFL House could have chosen a better venue in a traditional AFL stare. It didn't.

Half the clubs cannot afford to play in the league now without AFL assistance, add another 2-4 million a year to that to bring an extra team of players flying around the country all the time. Not going to ever happen.
