Yeah, I don't have a problem with people being reluctant to class him as elite based on the fact that he hasn't being going long enough compared to the other elites in the game, but his efforts on the field are elite for mine.By the end of this year, he will well and truly be in the conversation. I think the only thing stopping him from being called elite at this point is the fact that he has only really had one full season at AFL level. That established elite group of midfielders have been performing consistently for a few years now, give Cripps that time and he will definitely join that group.
Meh, like i said IMO. Not worth anything, but i'd have him replace duckwood in that 5. Point i'm trying to make is that it's not much of a stretch to see him amongst this group. If not now, sooner rather than later.

Why top 5 for position? Why not top 10? With 18 teams, that would mean that roughly only half of the teams would have an elite mid, but some teams might have more than one.
You can argue that he needs to work on his kicking, or needs more of an outside game and get more uncontested ball, etc. But even most of the elite players have 1-2 weaknesses to their game. Fyfe has questionable kicking for example. Kennedy (WC) goes missing in big games and dominates lesser opponents. Buddy misses heaps of goals. Not too many players have completely rounded games, even the elite ones.
Yes, he has a few deficiencies in his game, but he's only 24 games old. IMO he can still become more rounded, but is already elite in other areas and I think if he's elite in a couple of areas, then he's elite full stop.

I understand why people are reluctant. I don't have a problem with that.Absolutley
Because Elite means better than average, to me it means better than good... So top 5 IMO is a reasonable level to separate the elite players (Fyfe, Ablett, Dangerfield, Selwood, Pendlebury. Hannebury from the very good players Sam Mitchell, Josh Kennedy, Callan Ward, Priddis, Mundy, Sloan, Boak etc etc which Cripps is firmly in this group but still has a bit of work to do to reach the elite group. Of course this is just opinion based and yours is no less valid than mine.
Out of interest where was Cripps rated in Robbos top 50.... Not that i value Robbos opinion at all.
Cripps was included in Robbo's top 50, he was the only Carlton player in there.Haven't read Robbo's top 50, so wouldn't have a clue, but I doubt he's included him. Won't be going out of my way to find out though either.
Well I'll be...Cripps was included in Robbo's top 50, he was the only Carlton player in there.
Crippa was #45 in the list, and Robbo said this about it..Well I'll be...
Biggest question is, did he chuck in a few unwarranted * players, or did he take the route of trying to look legit by not including any?

Shane Crawford says Patrick Cripps should be referred to as Diesel Mark III.
CHRIS Judd watched Carlton’s Round 1 clash with Richmond on his laptop from a beach in Dubai, but even though he was thousands of miles away from the MCG there was one thing he couldn’t escape noticing.
The retired Blues great took delight in seeing 21-year-old Cripps cracking into every contest, seemingly getting better as every match grew more physical.

He's being double teamed constantly. Needs support.Seems to struggle a bit at Shitihad, team mates give him no help whatsoever.

The Swans put a lot of time into him, shows the regard he is getting. Kept going to the final siren though![]()
Noticed that in the Richmond game too actually. He doesn't seem to be moving that well at the moment. I think the knee is still worrying him a little.
Nerd. Here you go guys. Somebody mentioned this the other day and I thought it would be interesting to see. I finally got around to whipping something up.
I don't know how/if you can attach a spreadsheet, so I just screenshot it.
Comparing the first 25 games for all these players. I've tried to include a number of players that are similarly good in certain stat areas, along with a few players that Cripps has been compared to over the course of his games. If anybody else can think of other players they'd like to see him compared to, let me know, because now that I have the sheet set up, it's not too hard to add more.
The bottom table I have adjusted all stats based on playing 100% game time to even out the differences. This left Judd and Mitchell out on the cold as game time % wasn't recorded for their first full 25 games.
From the stats, it would appear the Danger spent a fair bit of time forward early on. Have also included W/L ratio, as I think that can have an affect on how easy a player might have it in a team, but can't really be calculated or adjusted for. Cripps is the standout for playing on the worst team and Selwood had a dream run in his 1st 25.
