top 20 one hit wonders on VH1 right now.

and i just realise, that i hear this song quite a bit.

has it always been in german?

i never knew the name, but i'm sure i would normally sing along to it at night clubs.

there must be a different version?

someone help me.

have i been such a tool that for years i've been singing a german in some mumbled english whilst being p*ssed? - i think the answer is, yes.

I think there was an English release at the time, but the hit was the German version (at least in Australia anyway).

There were 2 Versions, '99 Luftballoons', and '99 Red Balloons', both sung by the same woman, Nena or Nina, can't remember which.

The German version is awesome.

As far as i can remember the German version got to no.1 and the english version got to no.6. Next year was 1983 and we had to go thru the same biz with 'Der Kommisar'

The band was a german one called "Nina"

And yes... there was an English version and it did not sound half as good as the German one

The spelling was Nena and she is still touring Europe and recently released a greatest hits (hit?) CD.

the nena from '99 luftballons' was a band rather than a solo thing. these guys often get confused with another german female solo artist nena hagen.

speaking of german songs with two versions, how bout the classic 'let me in let me out' by trio?

Close, but no cigar.
Der Komissar, separate versions by Falco, and some other mob - might have been Kings Of The Sun, not sure about that did both chart in 1983 however 99 luftballoons and the English version first appeared on our chart in March 1984.
As an added piece of trivia, the same situation also occured in 1990 when Bette Midler and Cliff Richard both charted with versions of ' From A Distance '

There was an english version by "After The Fire".

Right you are.
Now I think about it. Kings Of The Sun recorded Montego Bay in 1983 or 1984, again, as another version by the Allnighters was in the charts. Another double whammy.

The sad thing is FP that I don't use Google for this stuff - it's all in my head!
Having said that I don't remember Kings of the Sun doing Montego Bay so I've learnt something.

Me neither, all the info is useless trivia stored withing the bonce.
Comes in handy at pub trivia nights though.

I got the single on 45 when it came out. It had the German version on one side and the English on the other both by Nina.

They didn't - it was the Radiators

How could anyone get Nena and Nina Hagen mixed up. One is a West German pop group from the eighties, the other is an East German Punk and general weirdo who began in the seventies. Also happens to be one of the sexiest chicks from that era. Her and Siouxsie Sioux together was my fantasy growing up. Too much info perhaps. :p

Me too. You still in therapy?

I also had "Ca Plane Pour Moi" by that Belgian idiot Plastic Bertrand. Some other idiot came out with an English version called "Jet Boy Jet Girl", which, after going through four years of French, made NO sense at all.
