Page 82, Herald SunA date with destiny
DON'T worry about looking at particular passages of plays as reasons why Carlton didn't get over the line against Sydney last Sunday.
It was all to do with the date of the match.
In its 130-year-plus history, Carlton has played only seven games on September 5. Three of them, including the first in 1903, were finals.
The Blues have won only one on that date- in Round 18 of 1908, against University at Princes Park.
The other six games have resulted in losses, with 10 being the greatest margin.
That includes Sunday's elimination final against Sydney and last year's elimination final against Brisbane Lions.
Blues historian Stephen Williamson also tells us that Carlton's first September 5 loss, in 1903, was also the Blues first final in the then-VFL.
Old enemy Collingwood scraped home by four points.
