This least relevant derby in Australian sport being on tonight makes me so sad. Victory had turned the Cup Eve game into a pretty fun game. It didn't usually sell it out, but it wasn't the point - it was a good way to involve a less popular team in a semi-marquee game/timeslot, as we were doing with the Nux for I think the last 2 seasons we did it.
And it went away for no real reason. It became a victim of falling crowds when it's crowd drop off was no worse off than any other game throughout the season.

I miss the Cup eve match against the Nix was always a goal fest most of the time and it got a pretty good away contingent of Kiwi's turning up supporting the Nix. I don't think it got under 20k even when the match was at AAMI Park. It was a fun match to attend and it kinda worked alongside the Cup Carnival.

Auckland FC have already matched NZ Knights cumulative crowd for the total 05/06 season. Exceeded NZ knights point tally too for both clubs debut seasons.
I remember NZ knights being a bunch of league 2 long ball playing plodders. Incredible hiwtgey got it so wrong when the potential was clearly there.
