in last years draft one of the very youngest players was Aidan parker. A 193 cm tall defender, in the tests they had at the camp he was # 1 in agility for tall defenders, he was one of the quickest and had one of the best vertical leaps, he wasnt taken in the draft, last year i posted on this forum questioning the eagles logic, this year he is going back, hes still 17 i think, or maybe just turned 18, he is one of two WA vice captains, which means hes good, he plays full back for a WAFL team which is more than McDougall can managage, and this year will most likely be taken in the top 20 at the draft.
Some long term thinking would have gotten us another key player, instead of Miller on our rookie list

The recruiting staff are not fortune tellers, they pick players on their opinions of the players. He might of done good at the draft camp, but maybe they didn't see enough of him play to make a decent "profile" of him and didn't draft him for that reason. 15 other AFL clubs didn't draft him either, so maybe he was not all that good last year, this year he might be better.

But if he is good, and with the Dorkers likely to use their first draft pick on Polak, then there's no reason why we won't pick him up. At this stage we look like getting picks 2,5 and 20. Thats 3 picks inside the top 20, we could snare some real talent with that.

The future looks bright.

I hope we capatilise on our picks this year! We have been bad in the past so we really need to get talent this year, if not i see us languishing at the bottom for a long time. Its now or never, we cant stuff this up!

Especially considering they want to change the concessions rule, if we don't capitalise on our opportunites this year we will struggle to make up ground on the opposition.

The draft is however talent laden this year, and with 3 picks in the top 20 it is unlikely we will get a dud, let alone 2 or 3.

I think we should trade all our draft picks. We have enough good youngsters. We need some more 20-23 year olds. With lists down by another three there is going to be some talent around.Everyone has to delist at least six!! Even Freo with 17 players ourt of contract offer a chance of a reasonable trade Troy Cook on the wing or forward would be a chance. Bandy or Pavlich (he hates it at Freo) are possibilities. I thought Walker looked to have talent too. Freo just can't seem to develop players. Some may shine at WCE. Lets face it most of us wrote Trent Carrol off but with decent coaching he is improving every week.

Just cause the guy is atheletic doesn't mean that we should get him. Last year's draft was known to be significantly poorer than previous years and the fact that he wasn't picked up by any of the 16 clubs suggests he ain't got the best of skills or brain or something. This years draft is particularly good so I can't really see him going off in the first twenty considering he wasn't even considered last year. McDougall is more than likely to turn out a better player than him.

Secondly to Frodo, there is no way we should trade all our draft picks. This is really the first year we get a crack at the cream of the crop and our club really does need some good talented youngsters. I would prefer to get our youngsters of the future now and wait 4 years instead of getting established players and being a power in 2 years but to a lesser extent than we would be if we waited the four. If Bandy is delisted I think we should pick him up, I'm not sure how old he is but he does have athletic ability and and allright skills. Maybe a change in environment will bring a change in him. Pavlich will most likely go home and I've never been that impressed with Walker.

If we are to pick up 20-23 year olds, I think we need to trade players from our list to get them. Morrison, Braun, Banfield and Fletcher all come to mind cause face it, they're stagnating at WC and all are good players. With a few good youngsters in the draft, a couple of good recruits along with what we could say, a "fresh" list we will start to improve again.

BTW, I'm glad that Carroll is improving cause at the start of the season a lot of people were bagging him despite my attempts saying to give him ago. Considering the beltings we have been given and the big name forwards he has had to play on, he has shown he can play well. He will retain his spot on the list at the end of the year. Anyway, this year's draft is critical as to how we will do in the future. It is full of talent and with all our picks we must endure to pick up the best players we possibly can and start with a new young squad.

It was never Doubted that Carrol has talent and he was developed at fremantle.
But Brown is a similar type of player, but far more talented.
So like Callaghn he wasnt required and was traded even though he was a decent player.

Pavlich is very happy at the club and wont be going anywhere.Ill give you bandy though.

But what will you give in return.

How bout a morrison and or Braun

God allmighty I hope that was a joke! Morrison and/or Braun for Bandy, mate I was hoping we would pick up Bandy in the draft after Freo delists him. Morrison and Braun is what we'd give for Hay, for Bandy, how about Wooden?

LMAO the only reason we would bother with Bandy is if he gets delisted we certainly wouldnt trade for him and if we did we wouldnt give up quality like Braun or Morrison for him. LOL that was funny.

I really must disagree on that note. First round draft picks are so valuable nowadays that teams have given up superstars to get one. Look at Bell going to freo, Colbert to Nth. We only got pick 18 and Sierakowski for Gehrid, who most regard as one of the most talented and athletic players in the AFL(bit lazy though). For pick 2 or 5 we would have to receive an under 23yr old who is currently on a $300,000 contract (Lloyd, Hay, Tarrant, etc).

That might sound exeggerated, but its true. A top 5 pick is basically considered a guaranteed star of the future. And with picks 2 and 5 we could pick up some very good players, certainly 10yr + service.

Delist??
I dont think so.

Bandy is like another gehrig, he has it all.
If you want him your going to have to offer allot more than a player you would have delisted anyway.

Brown is leaving, talks on new contract have broken down.

Having talked with Pavlich let me tell you Sabre he doesn't want to stay.

Daddy, I thought the same as you until I looked at the 'cream' of past years. Yes there are some top players but also some dismal failures. In fact the majority of top players come from second, third and fourth round draft picks. Look at Essendon, great depth but how many top drafts are in there? Look at our No1 Todd Breman!!!
If other clubs are prepared to give up a good player for a draft pick then we swap a gamble for a certainty.
But in reality it is the salary cap that often determines those deals. Take Essendon. They will have players screaming for salary increases. To stay under the cap they must trade a few high salaried players for top low salary drafts. Thats why we got Prior.
My guess is that Roo and Kempy retire and Milli and Jako become our veterans (only half salary goes to the cap) This will effectively mean we have room for two top players and stay under the cap.
Picking up 20-23 year olds gives 6 years of top skill. It also provides for the Buszan, McCarrey, McDougal etc to take be integrated in time.

You may be surprised Sabre!!! I catch up with quite a few at functions and one of my sons knows a fair few Freo players that delve into the betting world.
There is no need for confidence. Disillusion at Freo is discussed openly by players. What do you expect after 0-13 and never played finals footy...it would hardly be a secret!!!
