Ah Tim56. I was wondering what happened to this bloke. When I started on BF, I remembered him as an insightful and considered poster, and while I never much agreed with him, his posts were thoughtful, measured and usually intelligent.

All of a sudden, in the last month or so his posts are more likely to read..."sucked in losers !!" or "guess what..we won !" or maybe the brilliant " 3 more years..4 more years...suck on that."[/B]

I'm guessing that either:

a) He got kidnapped, then brainwashed at the Noodnuts / Miller CHF Posting School.

b) Lost a few too many braincells in a drunken frenzy celebrating the October election win.

c) Suffered brain damage after getting run over by horses at the trots or Melbourne Cup.

d) Is going through a mid-life crisis and has reverted back to his teen years.

In any case, he's finally fallen off that fine line between genius and insanity.

Just can't take the guy seriously anymore. Pity.

I can't speak for the man but his achievements in parliament over the past 30 years and public statements lead me to believe this (in no particular order):

1. A small government which minimises interference in the lives of ordinary Australians

2. That all Australians are entitled to a basic level of economic support as well as access to health and education

3. That goods and services are best provided by the efficient private sector, and that it should no be stifled be excessive taxation, 'protection' or red tape

4. The importance of the family unit for a strong, cohesive society and wellbeing of children

5. That national security is best maintained and enhanced through partnerships both with traditional allies such as the US and emerging partners in Asia

6. The liberal values of freedom of speech, thought, communication, worship, and the inerent need for tolerance of others found in those values

7. That Australia is a great country with a proud history

For the most part I believe he has lived up to these values, although some exceptions do exist.

Hoss: I do concede that I have probably let the election victory go to my head, so to speak. Thank you for helping to keep me honest.

1-So that's why he wont increase the Pension quaterly and will give give them a yearly increase of $ 100.The pension was supposed to be 25% of Average male income,i believe now it's only about 20%.I think the pension should be 70-80% of annual Wages as it is in the rest of the world.

The reason that the pension has declined is that it has been indexed to CPI, as opposed to wage increases. Wages have been increasing 6-7% a year roughly, while CPI has been going up by around 2-3%.

That is a ridiculous statement.

Keating was his great teacher in that department. In 1996 he (Howard) ran on an independent speaker platform. Jettisoned that when elected. Latham tried the same ploy and would almost undoubtedly have not gone through with it either if elected.

Britian has a system of disenfranchising a particular electorate to provide an independent speaker. Not sure that is an answer but the way the speaker is used for political ends here is a sham. The independent speaker is the one broken promise that I begrudge Howard.

Erm it is a well known fact that in the 80s he said several times that there were too many asian immigrants. I'm not going to look for a quote for you, you can do it yourself if you don't believe me but since the internet wasn't really around in the 80s you might have a difficult time finding it.

Hawke,as an example,moved quickly to dismiss Ministers or Backbenchers who broke the parliamentary code of Conduct.While Howard has done nothing,eg Wilson Tuckey or Trish Draper.

I think Fraser was the best example of that rather than RJL Hawke. Ultimately, by dismissing several ministers (seven or eight in the end) for often minor indiscretions Fraser destabilised his government and lost several very capable people. Howard did dismiss ministers over the travel rorts affair back in 96, but I don't think that anything Tuckey did was worthy of dismissal, and Draper wasn't even a minister.
