Im knocking off work in two hours and am gonna head to EB to check a game, problem is I cant decide between Mass Effect or The Orange Box (Mainly for team fortress). Anyone wanna help sway my decision and if you've got both tell me which is better?

Well, firstly, do you want an RPG or a Shooter.

If you want an RPG and liked KOTOR, you'll love Mass Effect.

If you like shooters, and value online play, you'll want the Orange Box.

Both of them are packed full of content and will provide plenty of entertainment.

Choose the genre you like best, as both games are gems in their field.

Yeah made my mind up, got plenty of online shooters in COD4 and Halo3, so gonna go with Mass Effect.

Good choice. Nothing wrong with the orange box, but mass effect is 50 hours of joy mate.:thumbsu:

I've heard that TF2 isn't that great on xbox anyway

It is better on PC for the reasons you've mentioned.

I wouldn't say it "isn't that great" tho. Its still a 9/10 on the 360 easy. Tops little game.

I recommend watching Zero Punctuation reviews on both games.

I recommend watching zero punctuation's reviews on any game, but merely for humour value.:D

He gave a glowing review to Orange box, whereas he didn't care much for mass effect.

But thats not really much of an indication of anything seeing as he openly admits he hates playing RPG's. If you love rpg's, especially the KOTOR series, you'll love mass effect, it friggin rocks

ZP : If you like RPG's, and KOTOR in particular, then take this review for the ignorant hate speech that it is.:D

To be honest i never found any problem with the issues he had, with combat in particular. Works fine:thumbsu:

Went with Mass Effect, and apart from a couple of call outs have been playing non-stop.....this game rocks!

That yahtzee guy or whatever his name is is purely a shock-jock amongst other video game reviewers. He does magnify some little problems in games to get some responses.

Sorry he doesn't praise every game that is ever made. Only the best get praise from him and he does find good in every game but it's his job to find faults and give them a comedic review.

Most reviewers are full of praise about the good things and spend little time on the bad things in the game, the bits that piss you off. They are so out of whack on how to be a critic. Yahtzee may be different but he easily the best and closest thing in the gaming world to a real critic.

Haha, thing is, most OTHER reviewers simply paste over any issues as long as they want to promote the game... Whether the issue is huge or small, it will bo looked over (look at teh graphixs)... At least Yahtzee focuses on the issues according to his experiences with the game... But still bias as hell towards certain genres :D

Ahh Mass Effect...Got it on Xmas. Stopped playing briefly on NYE, came to my senses...kept playing. Just a brilliant, awsome, brilliantly awsomely brilliant game.

Seriously, make sure you check your watch every few hours when you're playing it. You start playing at about 9pm, you look at your watch and it's 3am. You realise that you should probably just finish the mission then go to bed. But then the damn sun comes up so you decide there isn't much point in sleeping so you just keep playing.

The game does have its flaws though. The fugging Mako is so disgustingly overused, textures sometimes take several seconds to load and there are a fair bugs that can screw up a game and force you to reload. And there aren't many actual story missions. There is about 30 hours worth of optional side quests, but you could probably finish the game in about 10 hours (on normal difficulty) if you only did the story missions.

I've racked up over 110 hours in 2 playthroughs. Its one of those games you can finish pretty quickly if you just do what you have to, or you can take your time and enjoy it.

I know what you're saying about not being able to stop tho. You just go, aw, i'll just go to a side mission planet and save. Aw what the hell, i'll see if i can find some minerals and stuff. Might as well clear that bunker...

And so it goes:D

Mass Effect is a sensational game to play, I am hooked on it, would recommend this game to anyone who like RPG's.

I also heard its the first of a trilogy? has anyone else heard that? If it is I cant wait for the next 2 to follow this outstanding game :thumbsu:

Yep, there will be 2 more. Mass Effect took Bioware 2 1/2 years to make, so hopefully the sequels will come along much more quickly.

And I had never played, or even heard of RPGs before Mass Effect and it has definitely got me hooked.

True that's why I take something like a 7/10 game with a grain of salt from mainstream reviewers they do give favorable reviews to just average games. I'm just saying that even fantastic games he spends to much time on the negatives even if he says its a great game. I'm just saying sometimes he's different for the sake of being different sometimes.

Yep, and there will be DLC for the first game too, so you can bridge the gap between them a bit.

In other words, don't trade it. There's still some gameplay left in mass effect 1
