Would've thought Lyons was a lock for the squad but didn't expect him to make the final team. Charlie hasn't been at his best for some of the year and knew Rich would get snubbed. Disappointed but not surprised.

The squad is pretty stacked for small backs. Cameron not being in the top 3 small forwards was interesting but not completely surprising. Lyons unlucky.

Goes to show how much footy these selectors must watch instead of going off reputation. Rich and Lyons have both had better seasons than Hugh, and a number of players in that 40.

Happy for the lions selected regardless! Surely Lachie and Harris are locks

The Rich thing isn't suprising. He just isn't rated by the Media at all. No hype, no chance. He does get a few positive comments about his kicking by the call teams but that's where it stops. I can't understand it personally. I think last year or the year before his name featured pretty regularly on the BF All Australian thread, but then he missed the squad. Then when media types picked a second 22 for those who missed the team there was still no Rich. Even worse at the start of the year about 4 or 5 journos did a fantasy draft excersize across the entire AFL and still no Daniel Rich. Apparently there are about 15 smaller defenders ahead of him!

I know we are biased but he hits so many metrics for a rebounding defender. Gets plenty of the pill, rarely misses a target, takes aggressive options, takes the right option and doest try for impossible kicks despite his ability, fearless, decent mark for his height, positions himself well, fantastic below his knees, hard at the footy, good hands in tight, doesn't panic. I'm not sure why there isnt more love for him. Perhaps it is because he is pigeonholed as a failed mid that never lived up to his rising star hype?

If they had picked specialist wings last year, Clug would have been in the team. Can't see him getting in this year but would be happy for him to get it - would be a very funny thing to be able to throw at people in draft redo threads.

How Maynard gets in is a joke. Nothing but Victorian media hyping him up.

Would like to see how he stacks up compared to Rich.
I said exactly that in the other thread, which probably should be merged.

If Maynard is in, both Lester and Rich deserve spots and Jarryd Lyons absolutely should be named at the expense of about 5 players i.e. Pendlebury, Daniel, Adams, Oliver and even Fyfe who hasn't been his dominant self.

As an aside, who picks the AA squad?

Yes, Maynard is another media hype selection and Oliver has been ordinary in the few games I have seen(I went to 1 neutral game live at the Gabba he played in), + I find it hard to believe that Caleb Daniel has been better than Richy out of the back and Berry's been just as good as if not better than Oliver/Adams.

Usually the AA selectors are a panel of "prominent" past players and current media pundits.

Caleb Daniel deserves to be in the team imo, his ball use is incredible and the dogs would be stuffed without it. Berry hasn't been as good as Oliver/Adams consistently, he went through a 4-5 week stint where he was playing more up forward and was reasonably quiet.

Maynard is way overrated.

Butters is obviously a 'make sure the team top of the ladder has the most squad members' sort of pick - he doesn't deserve to be there. Charlie definitely didn't deserve to be in the squad but he's had a miles better season than butters.

It'll be weird when Lyons polls more Brownlow votes than a bunch of kids selected. Absolute farce he wasn't in the squad. Surprised Hugh made it again despite having a worse season than 2019. 🤷‍♂️

In the "Please Explain" Category : Maynard, Pendlebury, Taberner, Blicavs, Menegola, Ryan (WC)
In the "WTF" Category : Butters, Byrne-Jones

Menegola makes total sense and will be in the team, Taberner has probably been the third best key forward in the comp, Blicavs I'm iffy on. Pendles was pretty good but missed quite a few games and Maynard is big club nonsense. Ryan was great the second half of the season but pretty anonymous the first half so recency bias there.

Byrne-Jones is fine as a squad member, Butters may be the worst squad member in recent history.

I think Menegola and Gaff will be the wings

Yeah clug doesn't deserve it, but it would be funny if he got it. Would be the first time in a very long time a lions player got awarded something on reputation/past performance.

Statistically Lyons had a very similar season to what Jack Steele had for St. Kilda. One will likely make the final 22, the other doesn't make the squad.
One's the best midfielder in his team. One's potentially the third or fourth best. It makes a difference.
