Maybe Media Mike can ask Kevin Rudd to help build us a new stadium and attempt to use some of the $4.7 Billion dollars "national building plan" for infrastructure that was announced today. I am not sure if a sports stadium would fall under the banner of ‘necessary infrastructure’ but they should at least try.

How far out is Waverley Park from Melbourne's CBD?

A good 30kms. Was okay for myself as I lived out that way when it was in use, but like AAMI was a prick to get away from after he game and carpark used to turn into a bog pit it rained. I went there four times before it was closed Hawthorn Vs Adelaide 1999, St Kilda Vs Adelaide 1999 the 1999 Ansett Cup GF Hawthorn Vs Port Power and St Kilda Vs Port Power also in 1999.

I'm as big of a fan of a new stadium as any but, thats a bit of a stretch! Hahaha. I do think this could be good news however, at least opening the possibility for a change of plans. I think the impact of the financial crisis on sports and particularly the AFL have been overstated and misunderstood. Just like cinema revenues are going through the roof at the moment, cheap football entertainment should continue to prosper. I mean, a game of football is a hell of a lot longer than a movie, so I think we're likely to see a lot more SANFL attendance and casual AFL attendance as well. Sure, it might be harder to milk out huge membership numbers, but in tough times people need some entertainment. Think about the impact of Bradman or Jesse Owens during the Depression. Anyway, that was my rant on a tangent.

I actually think the opposite will happen. The financial crisis will only give the SA government stronger justification as to why a new stadium is not needed and any upgrade of AAMI not really affordable. They will say something along the line of “we need to tighten our belts and spending that sort of money on a sports stadium is not needed, especially in theses tough economical times”

I was being a little bit flippant with asking the Federal government for a hand out as i can only see 1% or maybe 2% of that $4.7 Billion dollars getting spend on South Australian roads, public transport and education. The majority of it will be used to build another bloody tunnel or bridge in Sydney. Adelaide may be fortunate to get the tram extension from City West down to the Entertainment Centre fast tracked by this infrastructure spending.

Pretty sure AAMi isnt located in a rain belt, has 2 colour screens, is easier to get to than Waverley ever was (come on people all you have to do is go down Port Rd - Not hard!) and as far as I know it has pretty good corporate facilities.

Corporate facilities on the wing at AAMI are pathetic and on a par with those at Hindmarsh "Harry the Hirer" Stadium. The ones behind the goals are newer but in a crap location for watching AFL.

AAMI is not exactly ideal in terms of access. Parking costs a fortune and there are traffic jams galore as there is only one way in and out of the place.

Buses aren't much better. Took me over an hour to get from Unley Shopping Centre to AAMI on the day of the Port vs NM Prelim in 2007. Wasn't helped by the fact you couldn't pre-purchase your bus tickets so the driver had to collect cash from every single person getting on board. At least in Sydney if you have a game ticket you get free train travel to Homebush.

This year they've had the same service as you mentioned in Sydney. Free bus travel to the footy if you have a game day ticket :thumbsu:

Thanks for the heads up. I didn't realise this had come into effect as i didn't go to any AAMI games in 2008.

Hopefully they can the tramline out there sometime in the next 5 years.

The only difference being their government making sport a priority. Getting a new stadium was always highly unlikely, but in todays economic climate it is pretty much at 0 chance for the next 15 years atleast.

The other difference is that the Victorian government was able to privatise its gas and electricity assets.

Pretty easy to prioritise sport when you are able to sell off $29 billion worth of energy assets. Rann doesn't quite have that option at his disposal . . .

It's official, the AAMI upgrade has been postponed

Should send The Advertiser into a frenzy.

A very disappointing outcome IMO. How long until we get a decent stadium now (either redeveloped AAMI or new stadium). Will be a very long time and Adelaide will continue to drift into the sporting wilderness until either AAMI is redeveloped or a new stadium is built.

I dont see how it is disappointing?

I am very happy.

IMO the stadium is like your first car, its a bomb, dont spend a penny on it, drive it till it falls to peices.

Then buy a nice car years later

I agree, I would rather wait until someone come along with the foresight to build a new stadium in the city rather then waste $150,000,000-$250,000,000 of taxpayers money on jurassic park and still be left with a poorly located shit hole that will continue to deter people from going to the football.
