It seems that in hindsight we have at least one good decision in the past few years in relation to trading/recruiting, letting Hamil go. At the time he was a good player but his enormous amount of injuries have really hurt him.

Mate you would have to be kidding. Hamill is an ABSOLUTE star. He has had a shocking run with injuries in the last few years but fully fit he is a very influentual player and his presents on the ground is extrodinary. Not only that he was captain for a year which suggest he also has good leadership qualities.

Just think about who we got for him.... Cranage and Livingstone... now who do you really think won out...? Not carlton thats for sure.

I would welcome him back with open arms if he wanted to.

Bit harsh there Marc. When his body is even close to 100%, he is certainly one of the best on St.Kildas list. Given the choice, i'd still much rather having Aaron running around in a Navy Blue jumper rather than a Saints' jumper.

If Fev chased with half the passion and endeavour that Sammy did, we would be a much stronger side and Fev would be inthe running for the captaincy.
(Note to Fev: Get Sammy's tapes out from 3-4 years plus ago, and watch his second.third and fourth efforts - he created more goals throught ackling and pressure than he did through leading and marking).

Its a pity to see his career winding up this way, and the decision to let him go was a joke ..................... thanks again to JE.

Oh, wait, we can't blame the previous president anymore (some sort of statute of limitations - Pagan is the only legit target now.................um let me see.........)
actually Sammy knew that Denis was coming over to the club in a few years and he already didn't like him so he left early. Just more evidence for the Pagan must go crowd:D

Yeah but he's been injured so much.

In hindsight we couldn't afford him even on the paltry $150k we were paying at the time. We had the chance to re-sign him for $300k halfway through 2000 but dithered too long. Eventually the Saints ponied up $600k for him, and of course he nicked off where the dollar notes are greener. Thanks for one good year Sammy.

Not that I'm bitter - we were already cheating our arses off before he quit. Imagine if we'd done some paper-bag deal for him like we did with Allen, Bradley and SOS. The AFL would have hit us even harder.

He was a good player but 600k is ridiculous.

yeh, i always wished we never got rid of him. is a great physical presence on the field, who saw him suck aaron davey in to give away a 50?was great. hope he has an injury free year next yr.
think i read somewhere that losing him totally destroyed the way we played (esp with whitnall, but we couldnt afford him anymore

I was always a big fan of hamills ..but if he was offered up for trade today i would be livid if we took him back ..his body just cannot cope with the rigors of AFL footy anymore

Given the choice I'd still rather have Hamill at Carlton than have had Sam Cranage & Luke Livingston!!!

Hamill is an absolute star. Him and Lance in the forward line was just fantastic.

The way he plays the game is so good to watch, when fit. And I'm confident next year he will be fully fit and it may be the link the Saints need to actually make the Grand Final if Hamill can kick 50 goals and create another 20.

Didnt we sign Campo around the same time for about 600-700k? I know who I would rather have kept.

No doubt we lost out on the deal in terms of what we replaced him with. In monetary terms we lucked out however. Having a highly paid injured player on your list is no picnic as we know with Kouta. I look at ex players in terms of success they have achieved elsewhere. Fortunately for us, Sammy isn't waving premiership medals at us saying 'I told you so', he isn't winning finals matches against us (because we aren't in finals).

Beaumont, Campo, Murphy, Allan ... none of these really hurt us in the end, and now due to injuries, it is looking less likely that losing Hamill would really be rammed home to us. We are very lucky in this regard.

Exactly. IMO Hamill was a similar crash, bash player to Hickmott and therefore was only worth similar to what Hickmott was getting paid. The fact that Hamill (no doubt on David Allison's say so) was chasing $400k + at a stage in his career where he had not won a B & F, played in a premiership, been named AA or led the goalkicking at the club reeked of someone who overestimated their worth. It was a shame to lose him, but he has never been worth the money he got at St Kilda.

Stupid comparison mate. Thats like saying if Hamil could kick as well, lead as well and had the freakish goal kicking ability of Fev the Saints would be unstoppable.

My mail back then was that Aaron wanted 300k for year one and 330k for the second year. Cartlon had said 300 for both and wouldn't budge. No wonder he left. Given Campo got his 600-700k I would have been ****ed if I was Aaron.

I resent that, its not stupid at all.
The things that you mention really relate to skill level. You can hone it but most players just have the gift.
Sammy probably never had great kicking skills, WAS a very good lead and had great contested marking skills.

MY POINT related to the sort of thing that comes from within - the desire to chase and chase and compete until the ball is out of your area, not just until you get beat the first time (A fine example is Eddie Betts - creates multiple goal opportunities with his pressure and desire to win the footy back, not his skills which often let him down).
EVERY player can and should do this. It would go a hell of a long way to improving us if Fev, Nick, and others showed this type of effort. Its not a natral talent, but its something that you learn (often through lack of natural talent).

It would also show that Fev has matured a lot in his attitude towards the game and his team (i.e. willing to do everything possible to pressure his man) which IMO would help his push for the captaincy.

Loved him as a player but hell be retiring next year and will probably only play about 10 games at best..

Agree, his body is shagged, and saints supporters are saying they should trade him, wont be traded because GT loves him, but wont have a impact either.

By the end of 2000, Campo had played in a premiership, won a B & F, AA selection and was ranked one of the best wingmen in the game. In comparison Hamill had played 92 games, kicked 114 games, had absolutely soiled himself playing on Martyn in the '99 GF and had no significant achievements to his name. He didn't even compare to 20 year old Lance at that stage, who had already gained AA selection, led the goalkicking 3 times and finished 2nd in the B & F. Hamill was an asset in our forward line, but he had not done enough by that stage to dictate contract terms to the club.
