How does this guy get a game every week with his pathetic skills? I would rather play Ellard in his position who actually has some guts and work ethic.

two different kinds of players- Joseph is a tagger/back pocket

Ellard is an in and under mid.

I know they are "different" players but to what extent do you really believe it? One has guts and determination the other fails to make an effort time after time. Ellard could easily follow the team instructions which Aaron gets... My mum could be as ineffective as he is if she played.

Um, 92% efficiency, 0 clangers.

Are we back in the business of making scapegoats out of fringe players?

0 clangers is very hard to believe, I watched him drop a few marks in defense to give up possession but fair enough if the "stats" say he was at 92%

i remember joseph being a fierce and hard running tagger that took elite midfielders (especially ablett) out of games on a number of occasions - if he is just running with a player through the midfield I think he does a fine job. Think he sometimes gets caught out when playing in defence/when his man drags him there. I like him as I think he was or is an elite runner (seem to remember some gps data from a while ago showing his work rate) but I do cringe when hes in the back pocket as he seems much smaller than 180 and lets himself down with mistakes/poor disposal at times

AJ has a red hot go, but let's be honest, we need a back pocket of better quality.

What frustrates me about AJ can't be understood by looking at his stats.

Joseph was one of our better players today, and to be honest, has been for the last month.

Joseph has an uncanny knack of winning clutch ground level one-on-ones when seemingly out of position. Has his limitations but has been far from our worst.

IMO Tuohy has been far more disappointing than Joseph, at least Joseph has a crack and tries to make things happen.

Aj has played well for at least the past month each week he is given a role and performs it admirably he is tough agile and worthy of our best 22

I don't think he is in our best 22, but I think he is in our best 20-30. Need a good bottom 20-30 to win a flag and he fits the bill. Made a blunder and a half but proud of the way he bounced back. Has had a very good month.

I agree that he rates 22-30 on our list...Good role player, but doesn't hurt the opposition enough, and is prone to a "deer in headlights" moment, which can be extremely costly....Davies worries me more....

I agree with the sentiment. It's an absolute mystery to me why he gets a game. He's constantly proven heartless and lacking in basic skill. Meanwhile we have better options in the seconds, even with our plague of injury.

this X10000....
heartless crap from above poster oh dear maybe take up softball...
ellard isn't fighting AJ for a spot,(curnow) ..
he is the best back pocket player we have an is in soild form,an is one of a few who bumps the other teams player who is tagging judd,murphy..

Inclined to agree with this but I'd like to see how he goes in a balanced side (ie close to our best) that is able to be confident in each others skills.

Has had a very good month and a long way from our worst yesterday.

AJ is given no favours by the Match Committee. He has inherited the deep defensive role by default. His efforts on Ablett and others are remembered by most here. There is absolutely no doubt that he is better suited in a run with role. AJ is actually a very good ball user which was highlighted yesterday. The Swans style of play suited him as they do not play a dedicated crumbing forward, he was released up the ground.
The "deer in the headlights" quote is not too far away, but let's put it in perspective. We have a number of players up the ground that do not do the job defensively. This is either due to poor structures or the "down hill skier" syndrome (that is another debate) At different times during the year AJ, 2E, Watto and Jammo have been attacked for failures when left one out with a "wave" coming at them.
While it is unsubstantiated, my opinion is that Joseph could do at least as good a job as Curnow and Ellard in the midfield. Ratten and co. do not want to give him the opportunity. He is our best small lock down defender at the moment. We do need an upgrade in that position, but the MC is reluctant to try options. The likes of Collins, Lucas, Curnow, Ellard, even Garlett should be given auditions, if nothing else, they will learn how the "other half" lives.

I also share this unsubstantiated opinion.

I feel for AJ because when Thornton is inevitably moved on this year he is a lay down misere to assume the mantle as the most detested player on this forum.

On what measure is AJ heartless? He either goes in hard or he uses his body to push his opponent under the ball so he can double back and retrieve it. Not a lot more pressure to have than often being the last player in our defence as the ball comes in and having to try to secure and dispose of the ball with no more than a split second available. He has to contend with the bounce and his opponent and try to get the ball away from the dangerous spot. When the ball spills out in that situation, it always looks spectacular, especially if an opposition supporter is the first through to pounce on it.

I think Joseph has had a very good month and won plenty of one on one contests.

I'm probably more concerned with Davies who seems to have a fumble moment from time to time and is left sprawled on the ground as the opposition take it into goal. However, Davies can spoil and has a bit of toe like AJ.

I reckon our depth players like AJ, and Davies are suffering from the JR affliction of 2008/2009 whereby everything they do wrong is magnified by 10 because we lose. Whereas someone like Ellard maybe is more fortunate, because a missed tackle, a fumbled ball in midfield is not as magnified as it is in defence.

Someone said we have better options than AJ in the VFL even with our injuries. I really don't see too many back pockets putting their hands up. Tough position.

In fact, given the lack of discussion points in the OP, and the fact it is a one line slagging off thread, it probably shouldn't even be open, except to hold the OP accountable. Not a lot of constructive food for thought there, negative or positive.

strange game to have a crack at joseph? has actually started to provide some offence over the last couple of weeks.

probably not in our best 22 with all players available but has shown a little but over the last month.
