They have a $1.3b budget. The problem is where they choose to spend it. Probably the Nationalism displayed during the Olympics is offensive to those in charge.
Hahaha rightio champ. That's why they show the Australian of the Year awards every year.

Gee, if only we had a body, let's say a Federal Government, with the power to give them more funding. And if only said Federal Government had the support of the public to do so. Oh. There is and they do. I guess they aren't responsible at all though.
The ABC have plenty of funding as it is. If their management is so incompetent that they can't fit the Olympics in their budget which they have years to prepare for, maybe it's time for a restructure. They can start by culling Q&A.

Or maybe this was the most financially sound decision without damaging Australian arts and entertainment? If only there were other avenues to keep up-to-date with the Olympics!

How much did we think we can slash from their budget?

I'd like to see a 25% cut for the next fiscal year. Possibly as much as 40%, with a view to phasing them out completely within 3-5 years.

You could just livestream half the nonsense they go with on youtube or other free platforms, and fill the rest with re-runs of question time from the Keating days.

The has has chosen to look after its fashionable inner city green clique instead of providing radio coverage of the olympics to the whole of the rest of Australia. No other way of looking at it.
Well there is another way of looking at it if you aren't blind to any reasoning or logic. But that's just you.

Poor argument, you could say the same about news. You could save plenty of money by axing shows like Q&A and Media Watch, shows which very few will miss and ones that our society will be better off without.

How would that save "plenty of money". MediaWatch is a 15min weekly show that probably has about 5 staff working on it. My money is you don't watch the ABC and are too busy listening to other people who don't watch it and say that it is a Left Wing station. It is hilarious that the people who don't watch it are always the loudest about it and complain the most despite never having watched the Q&A episode and only reading it in blogs, or in your case probably on Stormfront or the Reddit Incel page.

So did anyone see Media Watch last night? Paul Barry was unequivocal in his condemnation of the episode. He noted there should have been dissenting voices to shoot down the obvious bad ideas.

He also quite rightly pointed out the ABC should have left the episode up, so it could be debated.

None of the ABC dissenters here actually watch the ABC as they think it is too left wing. I mean how they know that without watching is beyond me.

Sorry but Media Watch is one of the most important shows our society should have. It calls out poor reporting in the media regardless of the political affiliation.

Yeah, let's axe the one public journalism watchdog in Australia so we can afford a radio broadcast of the Olympics which are already freely available through multiple other avenues. NFI.

Ratings also completely disagree with your last point.

That's what he doesn't like

Look at how much the presenters for Q&A and Media Watch are. There's a lot of people riding the ABC gravy train

Just on the Olympics. A bunch of sports no-one here gives a toss about until an Australian is a half decent chance of winning.

I'd rather my tax dollars NOT go to supporting it. If the commercial networks reckon there's money it, then go for it.

Heh, watchdog. Media Watch has been caught out that many times with its double standards that its lost integrity and relevance.
News is also available freely through other avenues, yet ABC have a 24 hour channel as well as 7pm bulletins. No-one's asking for these to be axed, so your argument about the Olympics being available on other networks doesn't hold up.

TV ratings are down across all networks with the ABC being no exception.

Yeah I'm sure Paul Barry and Tony Jones are lapping it up on their yachts in the Bahamas, swimsuit models on their arms and buckets of cocaine for all.
Trim the fat. And this was back in 2013

Because there's no other news (besides SBS) without commercial interests in Australia, you pillock. A public news broadcaster is ESSENTIAL to any functioning democracy.

Roughly 3% of the population watch ABC News each night, it's actually less relevant than it's ever been with more news sources available to Australians.

But back to the point, part of the reason we have a national broadcaster is to broadcast events like the Olympics which they have been doing for nearly 7 decades.

Why should they have to broadcast the Olympics if you can get access to coverage for free elsewhere and it's not financially viable for the ABC? What does that actually achieve? Use some common sense.

You can't get the most trusted news source in Australia anywhere else though.

And roughly 10% watch the news at all. Statistics need to be put in context.

Oh well, at least you have something new to complain about now.

Using that argument, should the ABC stop broadcasting all other sports that are available for free on other stations, such as the AFL and cricket? The Olympics are a special event which and one that the national broadcaster should be airing. If it means they have to cut divisive shows like Q&A in order to make room in the budget, then so be it.
